Prop 8 Unconstitutional: Gay Marriage Opponents Blame 'Hollywood-Orchestrated Attacks'

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 02/ 7/2012 6:37 pm   Updated: 02/ 7/2012 6:38 pm

California's 2008 ban on gay marriage was ruled unconstitutional on Tuesday by a federal appeals court, and while most of Los Angeles will be out partying tonight, some gay rights opponents are pointing a grouchy finger at Hollywood.

"We are not surprised that this Hollywood-orchestrated attack on marriage -- tried in San Francisco -- turned out this way," said Brian Raum of the Alliance Defense Fund, a Christian legal aid group that helped defend Proposition 8 in court. "But we are confident that the expressed will of the American people in favor of marriage will be upheld at the Supreme Court."

Andy Pugno, general counsel for the ProtectMarriage.com coalition, echoed Raum's sentiment in a statement. "With the sponsorship of the Hollywood elite, this lawsuit has been pushed forward as an assault on traditional marriage with the help of a judge who failed to disclose his own long-term homosexual relationship while presiding over a case seeking the legalization of same-sex marriage."

So just who is in this "elite" Hollywood squad that coordinated an "attack" on traditional marriage? They're the people that millions tune into for their afternoon talkshows, the people who star in America's favorite movies, and Top 20 Billboard singers -- just to name a few. Without further ado, we present our favorite Hollywood warriors for gay rights.

Current Gig: Gaga toured the world after the release of her album "Born This Way" in May 2011.

Advocacy: Gaga attributes much of her success to support early on from gay fans. Openly bisexual ("Poker Face" is about her bisexuality), Gaga vocally fought the campaign against Don't Ask, Don't Tell. In June 2011, she performed at Europride and gave a nearly twenty-minute speech criticizing intolerance by many European countries.

Money Quote: Gaga responded to questions about why she cares so much about gay issues: "I am a child of diversity, I am one with my generation, I feel a moral obligation as a woman, or a man, to exercise my revolutionary potential and make the world a better place. On a gay scale from 1 to 10, I'm a Judy Garland f*cking 42."

"But we are confident that the expressed will of the American people in favor of marriage will be upheld at the Supreme Court."

Get OVER yourselves, people! The fact is that the vast majority of Californians DO approve of same-sex marriage being legal. The only reason Prop 8 took it away in 2008 to begin with was the convoluted and confusing wording on the ballot so that people didn't know whether to vote yes or no to keep it legal. People were voting "YES" to say they were in favor of legalizing it, when in fact a yes vote actually had the reverse affect because of the wording. VERY sneaky and many who intended to legalize it voted the wrong way and were very upset thereafter.

But the bottom line is that it IS unconstitutional to put the rights of other people up for a ballot vote. You can't let the majority decide what rights the minority may or may not have. It isn't going to be any different when it gets to the SCOTUS. They will ALSO find it unconstitutional. IF these people are so upset about gay marriage, I suggest they don't enter INTO a gay marriage. Problem solved. Otherwise it doesn't affect them or their lives IN THE LEAST. And they need to get used to it. Within our lifetimes it will be legal all across the country!

The judge presiding over my divorce failed to disclose his long term divorce. Does that mean I get a do over?

Clearly, the marriage equality opponents have been watching too much tv. Turn off your sets, folks, and get out more.

The Party of Personal Responsibility blaming someone else? Noooooo. Perhaps they should get it through their thick skulls that people support equality because it's just the right thing to do.

Huh? Are these people so stupid that they don't realize Hollywood and San Francisco are two different cities, almost 400 miles away form each other? I guess, in addition to being wrong about biology, history, psychology and theology, they don't know about about geography, either.

What does holy matrimony have to do with civil law?

"thats like someone crying about not being able to marry your dog!"

Can your dog consent & sign a contract? Until that happens, you're comparing apples to Jell-O.

"You want equal rights then check it out, create your own type gay marriage and ban straights from participating"

No, we tend not to ban people just because we think they're "icky". That's your territory.

Lol. Using religion is useless, religion doesn't dictate US law.
01:17 PM on 02/11/2012
The US was foundered on Chrishtin principles! In the good old days people got seperate but equal and were happy for it, and thems that couldn't vote just knew that they were in good hands and didn't worry.

Seriously though, I'm so proud to be a Washington resident recently, and I can't wait for Santorum to be booed off stage when he gets here tonight.

It is not a lifestyle. We hve LIVES just as you do. And there are Pagans and heathens in this country who believe in their gods and goddesses just as you believe in your god. We are every bit as moral as you are and I'm getting very tired of the Christianist superiority complex. Be careful who you condemn, assuming that you are right about your god coming to judge us you might be up for a rather nasty suprise.

Really? Gays and lesbians have been allowed to marry here in NYS since last summer. There has been no impact on my lifestyle whatsoever. (I do have gay and lesbian friends that I hope will marry so I can celebrate with them at their weddings!)
12:26 PM on 02/09/2012
Maybe we should have another Kim Kardashian marraige,
to prove just how important it is to marry straight..!!
Yeah Right !

I am of the opinion that marriage should be eliminated
entirely, it is just another form of control by our
government, churches, and against human nature.

Some people just do not realize that love comes from the heart
and attarction from the mind, and most times that warm
wonderufl feeling has nothing to do with sex. But is more
about deep spiritual love that is not seen or felt in a male and
female relation, no matter how much they try to be the way
they are told to be. To Gays it is NOT normal to feel love
in ones heart for opposite sex, because it just does not
happen. And God made us all.
