Ron Paul Glitter Bombed (VIDEO)

First Posted: 02/ 7/2012 2:20 pm Updated: 02/ 7/2012 2:20 pm

Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul is the latest politician to fall victim to the glitter bomb.

Paul was showered with sparkles as he left the stage following a rally at the Minneapolis convention center, according to a press release sent to The Huffington Post by the Glitterati, an LGBT rights group.

The announcement says Glitterati member "Charlie McAwesome" released the glitter bomb while shouting "housing and healthcare are human rights not privileges."

Paul has proposed cutting $1 trillion from the federal budget in one year, according to Politico. Medicaid, the Children's Health Insurance Program and food stamps would be turned into block grants given to the states, according to Paul's budget outline.

As Yahoo News reports, Paul has also come out in favor of the federal Defense of Marriage Act, which defines marriage as a union between a man and woman. Though, Paul did support the repeal of the military's "Don't Ask Don't Tell" policy.

Paul isn't the only Republican presidential candidate in Minnesota to feel the wrath of the Glitterati. The group's press release notes that Newt Gingrich was heckled by Glitterati members during a campaign stop at the Ramada Hotel in the Mall of America.

Gabe Aderhold and Issac Rothberg interrupted Gingrich by shouting, "Hey Newt, why do you support discrimination against gays and lesbians all the time? Serial hypocrisy!"

When Gingrich tried to respond, the release says Rothberg stood up and chanted, "No hate in our state, why do you discriminate?"

Gingrich made headlines just last month for comparing gay marriage to paganism. In December, Gingrich also told a gay Iowan to vote for President Obama.

Both Gingrich and Paul are campaigning in Minnesota where the state's conservative voters will caucus on Tuesday.

Ben Egerman, who glitter bombed Karl Rove in October, said he hoped the Glitterati's actions in Minnesota made it clear that hateful politicians are not welcome in the state.

"Tonight we sent a clear message to politicians everywhere that we will not be silent while our communities are under attack," Egerman said in the release. "Those who seek to label our harmless actions as 'assault' should consider the real violence faced by LGBT people and the assaults on our humanity perpetrated every day by politicians like Ron Paul and Newt Gingrich."

Republican primary frontrunner Mitt Romney was also glitter bombed by a protester before a campaign rally in Minnesota on Wednesday, Feb. 1. Romney played off the incident as an act of celebration following his win in the Florida primary.

Glitter-bombing should be considered an act of hate. What if the tables were turned, and it were gays who were getting things thrown at them. They would be up in arms.It just needs to stop.

Wow, whoever wrote this article, as well as the person who glitter bombed Ron Paul have no idea what they are talking about. Ron Paul has consistently stated his opposition to the DOMA and has made it clear that he supports the right to gay marriage, even if he doesn't agree with gay marriage. Hell, here's a video in which Paul states in a TV interview that he's fine with gays being able to marry, about two minutes in: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0GZznxMC14

I was at the event and standing a few feet away and didn't even notice this. I did not hear the what the person yelled and I doubt that Ron Paul did either considering the cheering of his young enthusiastic supporters was so loud. I really don't understand why this person took it upon himself to do this considering that Ron Paul believes in personal liberty and believes that you should be able to live your life the way you want to as long as you do not hurt anyone else. I can understand doing this to someone like Rick Santorum that activity speaks out against gay rights, but it does not seem to make sense to do this to Ron Paul.

If it requires you to take from others to accomplish, it is most certainly not a right.

I thought the point of a glitter bomb was to make some kind of statement about homosexuality, not "housing" and "healthcare."

I just don't understand why people think the government can provide "free" healthcare and housing. The government provides nothing. It takes from one group and gives to another. There is no "free" so get over yourselves. Doctors want to be paid, landlords want to be paid. The money does not come from thin air but from people that sustain themselves and are living on or near the edge themselves. People need to grow up already.

we get free HC? when?
09:56 AM on 02/09/2012
Yo DA gaydood, you like everyone gets free health care anytime and everytime you show up to a hospital without insurance. You apparently have NO clue as to the laws of providing HC to all regardless of YOUR ability to pay. Why do you think the current HC system has failed and been an overwhelming failure on the legitimate tax payers? We are paying for the legal and illegal abusers of the sytem. Pull your head of of whatever orfice it is buried in and do some research!!!!

The Glitterati need to get their facts straight. Ron Paul has never attacked them but instead has never been interested in helping their cause. I bet he was as confused as I am with this whole incident. What a bunch of drama queens. If you're not with the Glitterati you must be against them. Such a narrow view of the world for those who consider themselves open.

Agreed. Although I think it's interesting that they switched from their usual talking points about gay issues to public housing.

Just like those people who argue that if you don't support giving tax payer money to a private group like planned parenthood, you are against abortion. Having the right to do something is completely different that having a right to something. Houses aren't like lawyers ... if you can't afford one, it will not be given to you.
09:52 AM on 02/09/2012
First of all, *housing' is not the same as 'houses'. Housing can be anything from military barracks and college dorms to palatial mansions. No one is expecting to be handed a house, but citizens of the worlds richest country should all have acceptable housing. The quality of that housing of course increases proportionately to the residents economic condition. No one is suggesting giving a homeless person a $250,000 house in a middle class neighborhood, but an 8x10 room with a bed and a dresser isn't too much to ask. Second, if Paul Ryan has come out against marriage equality, then he is flying in the face of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution which decrees that the majority is not allowed to deny civil rights to a minority. You really want a man who doesn't respect the Constitution as our President? Or perhaps he just doesn't know what the 14th Amendment is. Even if it weren't an issue of constitutionality, it's an issue of having a biased president who isn't interested in helping EVERY America. Supporting LGBT rights is not 'forwarding their cause'...it's supporting equal freedoms for every American regardless if you agree with it religiously or not.

Ron Paul did well in Minnesota and underperformed in the other two yesterday. It's frustrating to see the Republicans reject freedom & liberty while voting for more government control. Can Ron Paul win Maine this weekend? I hope so. I hope he keeps running as a Republican, building a base and then runs third party. Some say that will ensure Obama gets re-elected but we don't know what will happen in a 3-man race and Obama won't be any worse than Romney, Gingrich, or Santorum. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=262l6tbHSlU RON PAUL 2012.

False statement there. Ron Paul is not for the federal government having any say or interference in who marries whom. He speaks out that it's none of government's business all the time, videos of the issue in his own words abound for those who want actual knowledge - and he is NOT in favor of the Defense of Marriage Act AT ALL.

What's really interesting is you'll never find a conservative doing this type of thing to a liberal, but somehow liberals think it's okay to do to people they disagree with. Like pie throwing at Ann Coulter, John Stossel and the list goes on.. Just bizarre. Imagine someone threw a pie in Obama's face because they didn't agree with his policies?
