Massage Benefits: 9 Healthy Reasons To Make An Appointment Today

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 02/08/2012 9:06 am EST Updated: 03/07/2012 3:49 pm EST

Last week, a new study found that massage really does work to ease those sore muscles after a tough workout. Just 10 minutes can reduce inflammation, which can help your body recover.

However, the health benefits of touch extend beyond simply soothing aches and pains. Of course, the stressed-out have been proponents of the anxiety-busting procedure for decades. But a growing body of research suggests that a rubdown is even better for you than you think. Click through the slideshow below for some surprising health benefits of massage.

For the same reasons that a massage is relaxing, it can also soothe anxiety and depression. Massage reduces levels of the stress hormone cortisol, resulting in lifted spirits and often lower blood pressure. It can also boost the neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine, which are involved in depression.

If you can tell me how to find that freaking mobile massage los angeles, I'll give it a try. I normally hate massages, but stress has reached a high. Might be time to give in!

I personally love getting messages because they make me relaxed and put me in a great mood. They really loosen up all of my muscles that are in bunch from sitting at a desk all week and then from working out. I referred to Natural Standard database after reading this article to see the evidence grades for what this article said massages would help treat. All of the treatments besides quality of life in cancer receive a grade "C" for unclear or conflicting scientific evidence, whereas quality of life in cancer received an evidence grade "A" which means strong scientific evidence supports this claim. I found this to be interesting.

Thank you for the great article. People need to know the plethora of benefits massage provides. I am a pratitioner in Seattle, WA. I find it challenging sometimes to get folks to take it seriously as a true wellness tool.

Thanks for the read! I've been debating back and forth with myself whether or not I should get massage therapy in Oakville and if it would be worth the money. I'm now convinced that it's a least worth trying once, who knows maybe I'll fall in love.

One of the topics we lecture in medical education for education credits is truly a molecular massage. We investigated a physicist that increased nerve conduction and regrew nerve fiber in double blind studies. Here is an example of what that did for Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy. http://www.thermoguy.com/blog/index.php?itemid=99

Here is what it did in a time-lapsed infrared video that was completed for investigation without expectations. http://youtu.be/jcBDxpSWA4k

Thanks for your reporting.

There are a large number of studies that have been performed in recent years that show that massage therapy can help with a vast number of conditions. In many of the conditions studied, such as decreasing ADD symptoms, including daydreaming and off-task behavior, the mechanism by which massage helps are not understood. In other conditions, such as behavioral problems and anxiety, it is likely that a need for and lack of touch has contributed to the condition, and receiving touch through massage therapy is part of the reason for its effectiveness. Many of the studies have concluded that further study on massage therapy are needed.

We provide Massage Therapy for a living to office workers all over Australia. We've seen the proof of its benefits time and time again for almost 20 years. We are very lucky to be part of an industry that brings relief and pleasure to so many and as you state here, in a very short time. 10 minutes is all that is needed for many. Thanks for the great piece!

Massage also heals your muscles faster! Think of it this way: you're training for a marathon and you injure your calf. The resulted pain is usually inflammation as your body begins the healing process. To ease the pain, we take an anti-inflammatory pill or take an ice bath. This may ease our pain, but it also slows down the body's ability to heal. Massage actually works to minimize pain AND also speeds up the body's ability to heal. I just love massage therapy! http://betterhealthwashington.com/2012/03/how-massage-benefits-your-muscles/

They left out probably the biggest benefit...touch...studies have shown from the Touch Institute in Miami that we have more of a primal need for touch than we do food... through my experience In my practice I know people need the energy they get from touch especially if they are without an interpersonal relationship. It is a healthy touch free of ego and your personal will...a pure chi that creates space where soft tissue is stuck that allows for a deeper inspiration(breath) which can benefit confidence, awareness and clean muscle memory.
