$55,000 Cupcake Is Really An Engagement Ring With Dessert

First Posted: 02/ 9/2012 10:34 am Updated: 02/ 9/2012 5:27 pm

It's no surprise that red velvet is one of the more popular flavors at Cupcakes Gourmet, a Philadelphia-based cupcake store. What is surprising is how much the store is charging for a new version of the treat. Just in time for Valentine's Day, the Sparkling Red Velvet Cupcake is now available for $55,000.

This isn't a case of using edible gold leaf, white truffles or another expensive ingredient that restaurants use to create insanely expense (and probably not worth it) food items. The store merely sticks an eight-carat engagement ring from Warwick Jewelers in the frosting.

"There's no sweeter way to pop the question to your significant other than with a dreamy cupcake with a diamond engagement ring sitting on top," said Maki Garcia-Evans, owner and executive pastry chef at Cupcakes Gourmet, in a press release. "A diamond is worth a thousand words, but with a cupcake, it's worth more. It suits our store's slogan, 'Love Tastes Like This.'"

Although HuffPost Food can think of several sweeter ways to pop the question that with a "dreamy cupcake," couldn't you at least get a choice of flavors? Triple Chocolate all the way!

not really. i've seen more expensive cupcakes. i saw one with a ferrari parked on top. the cupcake was just 75 cents. I saw another one under the eiffele tower. in that case, the cupcake was worth 50 cents but the eiffel tower was worth, well, precious.

Too bad their website can't be navigated. I'd have bought some cupcakes!

We are in the process of updating the site. There should be a functionality to buy online, but not the $55k sparkling red velvet. Although someone did buy it by phone so I guess that works too. Happy Valentine's Day!

Who needs another flavor?? Have you ever had Red Velvet Cake? OHMYGOD -- I don't know how the South kept this one a secret for so long. It was years and years before I ever could get it anywhere else.

Don't know or have many friends that can buy a $55.000.00 diamond and put it in a 10 Cent cupcake. Dimonds are cheap De Beers keeps the price up as they hord most of the worlds diamonds, and if the prices go down the just flood the market to get the prices back up. Buy Emeralds that are much better and woman love them. Glad that my wife loves the green of an Emerald and didn't want a diamond. The cost is pretty much lower then a dimond and if you can find raw emeralds that is better yet. Have sever from South America that I paid little for and to have them cut was even less then I expected and they are just beautiful and the wife loves everyone of them.

most people dont know that most gold in the USA is 10-18 k and jewlers buy the material for maybe 100.00 and mark it up 300%. the diamonds are even cheaper. im glad im friends with a jewler who schooled me on this or i would be getting scammed

So why not just buy a $10 cupcake and stick the engagement ring in it and save $54,990. That leaves plenty for the ring, a new entertainment center, and even a car if you do it right.

I live in Philly, and the cupcakes are great! I'll take the cupcake minus the ring - the thought of marriage makes me nauseous!

Price to get a 'Sparkling Red Velvet Cupcake'? - $55,000
Price to buy your own engagement ring & make your own cupcake? - $4,507.21; which is priceless because it not only comes from the heart, it also saves your pockets if she says "No".

I know capitalism is king, but this is just plain ol' common sense.

You can make your own cupcake even cheaper if you carefully shop estate jewelry and things like Craigs List. So many people, in these hard times, are trying to sell their engagement rings not for retail value, but whatever they can get for them. Some really nice stuff out there.
