Apple Store Protests: Outraged Customers Deliver Petitions To Apple Stores

Apple Protest

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 02/ 9/2012 2:25 pm Updated: 02/ 9/2012 2:25 pm

Just two months after its opening, Apple's state-of-the-art Grand Central store in New York City was the site of an event that the gadget giant would probably like to keep quiet.

According to a press release from Change.org, on Thursday outraged Apple customers delivered petitions to the Grand Central store and five other Apple retail stores around the world calling for the company to respond to widespread criticisms of conditions in its suppliers' factories and to commit to creating an "ethical iPhone 5."

The 250,000 signatures were to be delivered simultaneously to Apple locations in Washington D.C., San Francisco, London, Sydney, Bangalore and to Apple's Grand Central store. CNN Money reports that the New York City demonstration involved about a dozen people who "peacefully handed their petition -- hundreds of pages stacked in a shipping box -- to the store's manager."

The quarter of a million signatures were collected through separate petitions on social activism sites Change.org and SumOfUs.org.

The SumOfUs petition garnered 55,000 signatures and according to the Change press release was the organization's most viral petition since it launched two months ago. At the time of this writing, the Change.org petition had gotten almost 200,000 signatures since it was started in late January by Washington D.C. resident Mark Shields.

In an open letter to Apple, Shields, who describes himself as an "accidental activist," wrote of his disappointment upon finding out that the company, of which he is a customer, uses components made with unfair and dangerous production practices. Shields writes:

You're supposed to think different. I want to continue to use and love the products you make, because they're changing the world, and have already changed my life. But I also want to know that when I buy products from you, it's not at the cost of horrible human suffering.

While Shields told The Guardian that he doesn't advocate an official boycott of Apple products, he did say that he can't in good conscience purchase the Apple TV that he "really wants." Many, if not most, of the people who signed the petition are Apple customers. According to the Change press release, of the 55,000 people who signed the SumOfUs petition, 35,000 said they owned Apple products.

Shields said he became aware of these abuses while listening to an episode of the "This American Life" radio program, which detailed working conditions in Apple's component factories in China. According to the broadcast, it isn't uncommon for employees to lose the use of their hands due to carpal tunnel brought on by performing the same task over and over for shifts that can last up to 35 hours.

In January Apple revealed its supplier list for the first time ever, as well as the results of an audit that uncovered that some Apple suppliers had employed underage workers and committed environmental offenses. The information discovered by the audit prompted Apple to cease doing business with one supplier. The company also said it would allow an independent group from the Fair Labor Association to keep an eye on its suppliers.

However, after a two-part story was published in The New York Times in late January the distrust of Apple's business practices only increased. The piece offered a harrowing behind-the-scenes look at the deplorable working conditions that exist at multiple Apple supplier factories.

According to Reuters, following the publication of the article, Apple's CEO Tim Cook blasted the Times in an email to employees. The message read in part, "What we will not do -- and never have done -- is stand still or turn a blind eye to problems in our supply chain. Any suggestion that we don't care is patently false and offensive to us."

Those who signed the petition find Cook's assertion of ignorance a bit hard to swallow. In a statement on the SumOfUs website, executive director Taren Stinebrickner-Kauffman said, "Apple's attention to detail is famous, and the only way they could fail to be aware of dozens of worker deaths, of child labor, of exposure to neurotoxins is through willful ignorance."

Apple is certainly not the only electronics giant guilt of labor abuses, and many of the manufacturers that work with Apple also supply companies such as Microsoft, Hewlett-Packard and Dell. As The Guardian notes, "Though such problems also occur at many other western consumer electrical companies that have their products made in China, Apple's position as a brand leader -- and its huge profits -- make it a high-profile case."

According to Tech Crunch, a group called Swagg Security hacked into Apple supplier factory Foxconn's computer system and uploaded usernames and passwords to file hosting website The Pirate Bay.

I have to wonder if this whole issue is a case of corporate character assassination and we're all just a little too eager to swallow it hook, line and sinker.

If FLA gives Foxconn a clean bill of health will any of the 200,000 signers of the petition even believe a word of it or has Apple already been convicted in the court of public opinion?

(BTW, I'm currently visiting China and in the press, Foxconn has already been found "a far better working environment compared to other companies in the same industry".)

It's amazing to me how people who are pro-apple whine and say they are doing it to!!! Can't accept apple is not perfect..sad.

Why just Apple?

Oh thats easy. Most of the people here don't give a damn about the plight of Chinese workers.

What they do care about though is kicking Apple.

Despite the fact that just about every Chinese manufactured product they own was made in worse conditions, they just want to single out Apple.

This is mostly because Apple with iOS is winning in OS ecosystems stakes against the likes of Android and Microsoft. This is upsetting for many with vested interests in these -under threat- platforms.

Most here don't care about the rights of workers in far of lands. If they did criticism would be much more balanced with all the culprits called to account. And organisations like www.amnesty.org and www.hrw.org would have far more support than they currently enjoy.

It stands out a mile.

Why just Apple? Is that a rhetorical question?

I would think it is obvious to anyone who has listened to the endless propaganda from the slick marketers that you choose to believe about, wait for it, thinking different. I use Apple gear all the time, among others, and will use Android phones and Microsoft products as well. I have no doubt that all these companies will survive quite well. Android will not die, nor will Microsoft.

It's the whole "thinking different" thing that has people disturbed. They buy Apple because they want to be different. More creative, more aware, more artistic. Now that the Apple fans are being made aware they are no different than anyone else, they have to pretend they will do something about it.

"...they have to pretend they will do something about it."

70% of those who signed those petitions were Apple customers. They "did something", by signing, and having their names hand delivered in a media event engineered to draw attention to the problem.

Now, will they go the extra step of refusing to buy from the company until those issues are corrected? That remains to be seen.

I know I will; just like I don't purchase *anything* from WalMart/Sams or Monsanto. When Apple's suppliers are certified by the FLA, I'll consider buying their gear again. Until then...nope.

"According to Tech Crunch, a group called Swagg Security hacked into Apple supplier factory Foxconn's computer system and uploaded usernames and passwords to file hosting website The Pirate Bay."

Not a file hosting website - it just hosts the trackers for torrents. Either remove it or explain it in full, because calling it a file hosting website like megaupload will only bring confusion.

"Xi said that Americans have benefited from China's rapid economic growth. Repeating a figure offered by Hu on a state visit to Washington last year, Xi said that US consumers have saved $600 billion by buying Chinese goods" So Id start keeping quiet!!

Really? Why just Apple? The vast majority of the products we use and the clothes we wear are manufactured under the same conditions. Shouldn't WalMart use as it's slogan for kid's clothes; "WalMart children's clothes, made by kids for kids"?

The western world and China Gov. need to address this sooner. When Apple and every company doing biz with China where they gonna go to manufacture their products? Wait till you see the price hike....and as freedom comes to China and many other countries; as the economic playing field becomes even, the west won't have people and Gov. To exploit anymore....our Counties economy will take a huge hit...as it should. Stock up on your toys...

Isn't productivity part of the cost equation?

Each U.S. worker produces $63,885 of wealth per year, more than their counterparts in all other countries, the International Labor Organization said in its report. Ireland comes in second at $55,986, ahead of Luxembourg, $55,641; Belgium, $55,235; and France, $54,609.

The U.S., according to the report, also beats all 27 nations in the European Union, Japan and Switzerland in the amount of wealth created per hour of work - a second key measure of productivity.

The U.S. employee put in an average 1,804 hours of work in 2006, the report said. That compared with 1,407.1 hours for the Norwegian worker, and 1,564.4 for the French.

It pales, however, in comparison with the annual hours worked per person in Asia, where seven economies - South Korea, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Hong Kong, China, Malaysia and Thailand - surpassed 2,200 average hours per worker. But those countries had lower productivity rates.
....workers in East Asia are still only about a fifth as productive as laborers in industrialized countries.

So the real question here is, why aren't products made in America cheaper due to the greater output of that product, and why aren't the same products made overseas costing more per unit?

* Excerpts from a U.N. study on productivity levels worldwide. Aired on CBS's Money Watch.

Corporate profits must always increase. Always. So productivity is mostly just window dressing. It is meaningless. What matters is that corporations have a choice. They can hire US workers and pay them a fair wage and benefits, or they can hire our modern version of slaves.

Sure, not hiring us workers means you create an unsustainable consumption economy where people are expected to buy more and more but get paid less and less...but hey, that isn't the corporations problem. They are legally obligated to always increase profits.

That where our system goes against the natural reality...We won't be able to sustain the consumption our system needs and our way of doing business and governing will change big time....the west will come down to an even playing field and there will be many capitalists very unhappy...more conflicts and war on the way...

Apple will not abandon its cheap and mistreated Chinese labor so Americans can enjoy its products at inflated prices.

Why not take a plank from Newt Gingrich's platform?. Have underprivileged American kids work in sweatshops after school. Provide sleeping mats on the floor and a daily ration of gruel. Thereby shipping costs would be significantly reduced--passing the savings on to shareholders.

Another benefit learned by the kids: "If you can't make it here, you can't make it anywhere."

By the way, kids, please replace the plank after use!
11:05 PM on 02/12/2012
Yeah, but the problem with that is if the American kids working in sweatshops starting dying then the corporations couldn't deny responsibility. Right now they can because they just say, "Hey, we contract that work out. It isn't our factories." So they can get away with exploiting slave labour.

And no politician or corporate CEO will risk doing the same thing directly here. It would be a political and PR nightmare.

Apple has made billions out of slave labor and you can bet they aren't about to stop. That is business ethics for you. To heck with the workers. They are just numbers. They can always find another person to fill the chair. Never will I use an IPhone or a Mac computer. Time to make them in the United States. Period.

Good luck buying any tech gadget that isn't manufactured in China under similar conditions. In fact, you may find it difficult to find a tech product that isn't manufactured by the same company that Apple is under fire for using. Here's a partial list of Foxconn customers:
Acer, Amazon (Kindle), Cisco, Dell, Gateway, HP, Intel, Microsoft, Motorola, Nintendo, Nokia, Samsung, Sony, Sony Ericsson, Toshiba, and Visio.

So that's a good number of the phone manufacturers, all the major game system vendors and all the major Computer makers. Good luck man, I wish you the best in your crusade. Turn in all of your tech gear.

The whole image of Jobs as some alpha guru born of meditation and enlightenment is just so much trash and phony pablum lapped up by a public who will eat any shiny thing you put in front of them.

Truth: Apple makes fine stuff but their ethics ain't no better than anyone else, and in some cases, they're worse. And the hype machine surrounding the abilities of an Apple machine is so far off the scale absurd it's almost funny, except that it pollutes the very idea of computing itself, which is supposed to be an act of collaboration.

A tough thing to do when a lot of Apple software depends on proprietary processes and file formats which don't work with other platforms.
08:54 PM on 02/11/2012
Really, really explain to me how Apple has made your life better? So you can Facebook all day. So you can threaten my life with your car while you talk and text? So you can pirate your favorite music at the expense of the artist who made it? When was the last time you sat in front of a computer and wrote something that contained more than 250 words. Sure its fun, but don't tell us how its transformed the world for the better. I constantly pass by kids with glazed eyes who aren't even aware that they re standing in the midst of real life.

All the other companies making goods in the same place must be laughing their heads off.

But that doesn't excuse Apple either and I have said before I would pay more for it to be made in america. And I own a large mac desktop and ipad and ipod.
