Exercise Makes Us Happy -- It's Science

Exercise Happy

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 02/ 9/2012 7:27 am Updated: 02/ 9/2012 9:27 am

Why do people exercise?

We know that regular fitness is good for the heart and that it can help the body to build muscles and maintain a healthy weight. But it also spurs the release of endorphins, those feel-good chemicals that promote happiness.

And now a new study in the Journal of Sport & Exercise Psychology adds more evidence to the "happiness" benefit.

Researchers from the Penn State University found in their study that the more physically active people reported greater general feelings of excitement and enthusiasm, compared with the less physically active people.

"We found that people who are more physically active have more pleasant-activated feelings than people who are less active, and we also found that people have more pleasant-activated feelings on days when they are more physically active than usual," study researcher Amanda Hyde, a kinesiology graduate student at Penn State, said in a statement.

The study tracked the daily activities of 190 college-age students, who were asked to journal the amount and level of physical activity they got in their free time (15 minutes or more), the amount and quality of sleep they got each night, and their overall mental states (like stress and their feelings). At the end of each day for eight days, the participants gave their journals to the researchers.

"Our results suggest that not only are there chronic benefits of physical activity, but there are discrete benefits as well," Hyde said in the statement. "Doing more exercise than you typically do can give you a burst of pleasant-activated feelings. So today, if you want a boost, go do some moderate-to-vigorous intensity exercise."

Recently, a study came out in the Journal of Business and Psychology showing that bosses who don't take the time to exercise are more stressed and lash out at their employees, compared with bosses who make time for fitness.

Researchers found that the more stressed out the bosses were, the more likely their employees were to say they felt like they were being victimized, the Times of India reported. And, the more the boss broke a sweat, the less abuse reported on the part of the employee.

I'm skeptical that this "study" actually proves much of anything. A study in the Netherlands using identical and fraternal twins suggests that there is something genetic that affects both the likelihood that someone will exercise and the likelihood that they will be happy. They found that if one identical twin exercised regularly both twins were more likely to be generally happy even if the other twin didn't ever exercise. However, there was no such correlation in fraternal twins. So it's quite likely that the connection between frequent exercise and "greater general feelings of excitement and enthusiasm" isn't as this article suggests that exercise is causing those feelings, but that people who are more likely to be generally happy are also more likely to exercise regularly.

Also, it kind of makes sense that people who enjoy exercising would feel good after exercising. But realistically that's no different than saying that people who enjoy shopping feel good after shopping. It doesn't mean that everyone will feel good after exercising anymore than the fact that some people enjoy shopping means that everyone will feel good after shopping.

Elle Woods told us all of this in Legally Blonde. This was part of her reasoning on why the law firm's client could not have killer her husband. The client was a fitness instructor and Elle said that exercise releases endorphins that make people happier and a happy person could not have killed her own husband.

It is about balance... to maximize your gains, balance, work, rest, sleep, diet and your exercise routine. When one goes out of whack, the others must be adjusted to bring your body and mind back in balance.

So true. I've been out of work for a little over a year now. This has caused me much stress and depression. I started going to the gym everyday, while this hasn't solved my problems, it has made me feel much less depressed.

Why are you out of work?
09:41 PM on 02/13/2012
Job cuts and scaling back in the industry in which I work. Ultimately the economy. Have worked my whole life and now in my mid 50's am out of work for the first time since my first job when I was 16. It's not a good feeling and very scary.

It is totally true. I went through a really bad depression and started to exercise more and I got better. Now I exercise at least 5 to 6 times a week. The days that I don' I feel sluggish and in a bad mood.

Exercise stimulates the release of endorphins, the same chemical released during orgasm. We have know this for years.

Who writes these titles? This is such a poorly worded and simply stupid title. "It's science"? Do you know what science is?

Am I the only one who gets depressed after working out?

I've tried doing different intensities and different combinations of work outs and I still get really sad afterwards. I really don't think I'm over doing it... what type of food do you recommend before and after working out?

Give me a bit more information on why you feel depressed after training, Ace. It is unusual that you would feel that way. I suspect that you may be overtraining, but I would like to read some more about how you feel. I'd like to try to help you.

Hi Jeff,

I am a 27 yr old woman, in case you can't tell from my sn.

My recent routine is 45-55 minutes of cardio (running and elliptical). I used to follow that with weight training, but I'm too tired. I can't be motivated to work out bc I get soo tired and not myself that it's not worth it to work out.

After working out: Depressed, agitated, tired, sometimes a bad high feeling (blurry vision, dizzy)... it's like having a bad day at the office where you need a drink or something to relax you.

As I said... I really don't think I'm overdoing it. I think it's more so that I'm not eating the right combination of nutrients. What's your take?

Thanks,
AHS

I think people often forget there are many benefits to a good exercise aside from a six pack and toned arms! It is so essential for shaping up our minds and hearts as well.

I love running with my dog and then doing a yoga stretch routine at home. We are both happy when done. I am crabby now because I've been sick with a cold for two weeks and it is slowing me down. I can feel a huge difference. Can't wait til this is over and I can get back to running. I'm sure my dog is wishing for it too.
