Nancy Pelosi Launches 'Stop Colbert' Campaign In Favor Of DISCLOSE Act (VIDEO)

First Posted: 02/09/2012 1:54 pm Updated: 02/09/2012 1:54 pm

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) announced a new campaign to "Stop Colbert" on Thursday, in an effort to pass super PAC transparency legislation -- and perhaps get revenge on behalf of her "friend, Newt Gingrich."

"Stephen Colbert used to be my friend. I even signed the poor baby's cast when he hurt his hand," Pelosi deadpans. "But since the day he started his super PAC, taking secret money from special interests, he's been out of control, even using his super PAC to attack my friend, Newt Gingrich. And if that weren't enough, I hear he doesn't even like kittens."

Pelosi then makes her case for the DISCLOSE Act, a bill meant to increase transparency in election spending that Democrats have been pushing, and, according to the YouTube video's description, plan on reintroducing on Thursday.

"Join me in stopping Colbert and creating a new politics free of special interest money. The first step is passing the DISCLOSE Act," she says, directing viewers to a Facebook website.

While Pelosi's pitch is satirical -- Colbert's super PAC shenanigans are a tongue-in-cheek critique of the negative effects of the Supreme Court's Citizens United ruling and Pelosi hasn't done much to reinforce her claim that Gingrich is, in fact, her "friend" -- she is serious about the legislation.

House Democrats have been campaigning on behalf of the DISCLOSE Act for months, and in January rewrote the legislation in anticipation of a new attempt to build support for it. Sam Stein reported on the updates last month:

The bill has been redesigned to account for the rise of super PACs and to make more transparent what is widely regarded as a dangerous proliferation of largely anonymous spending during the 2012 election cycle. According to ProPublica, super PACs have so far spent nearly $20 million on campaign activities in the first four presidential primary states alone. That total does not take into account the money spent that super PACs neglected to report.

That $20 million figure has grown significantly since the story, check out ProPublica for an up-to-date tally.

Very clever.  Of course Colbert launched the whole SuperPAC as a way fo showing how absurd the whole situation had become, but there was no way to pivot it into action to actually change things without dropping the whole persona.  But now he can make a big deal of Pelosi's 'attacks' on him to draw attention to how to help solve the problem.

This was a lob serve to Colbert.  I can  Read More...

Pelosi is pissed at Colbert for bringing light to the Super PAC fiasco, and disparaging her friend Gingrich... She's an idiot!

Thank you Steve Colbert for showing the American People how corrupt and how things are done in Washington.

I love Colbert and Stewart. Keep up the good work guys...;-) T.

The only way to stop Colbert is with what he fears most, grizzly bears. Enlist them, attach honey badgers to their heads. Sharks already have all the head mounted laser beams. It would take just a few bears equipped with honey badger headsets to stop Colbert dead in his tracks.

Those who hate her are typically just revealing their fear of her, much like everything else they hate - women, gays, unions, non-whites, etc. That's how you know she's on the right track.

If you hate her, you just might be a RepugnantCON.

We need more Nancy Pelosis in the House and the Senate. Maybe some of that Colbert PAC money could go to cloning research and development.

The reality is that when the government tries to write sweeping legislation such as McCain-Feingold, they rarely get it right, instead opening up all kinds of doors for those who feel like walking through them. Just wait and see what Obamacare does to the country if it is allowed to take hold. Katie bar the door, my friend.

The private sector is way smarter than the public sector. The best legal minds are in the private sector. The Feds can try to write all kinds of legislation, but there will always be holes that the smartest people will find in order to pursue their own interests. Why do you think so many powerful people in both the public and private sectors don't want a simple flat tax, or a VAT? The more rules we write, the more money there is to make/save for those who can exploit the system to their benefit and the benefit of all of their cronies.

Simple thoughts....maybe simplifying a little too much though? The "best" legal minds are in the private sector? What constitutes the best mind though? A mind that is only after cash? Legislation can offer loopholes, but that is not necessarily the case in all circumstances. Maybe those loopholes wouldn't be so big if the Republican party stopped defending them with their ceaseless (not to mention sub-par) rhetoric. You appear to be saying that de-regulation is a good way to go? Were you by any chance alive during 2008? De-regulation of the financial sector is exactly what you want!.... if you're interested in a global financial crisis again. (foreclosing much?) So you argue that we should do away with as much law as possible? "The more rules we write, the more money there is to make/save for those who can exploit the system to their benefit and the benefit of all of their cronies." Maybe you should travel to Somalia and see how well that works out? Or, maybe you should not vote Republican because it is their laws that generally create loopholes for their dirt-bag friends?

5. fake interest in a coherent energy policy
6. fake interest in upholding the law (esp. Roe v. Wade)
7. fake interest in personal freedom (Patriot Act)

My only critique would be that Herman Cain is hilarious. I would cite pokemon, and his ridiculous smoking ad. Rick Perry has a good slap-stick thing going on too. "Fake presidents"? Really is Obama any less fake than Bush? Bush pursued HIS interests. Obama seems to be pursuing the interests of the people (who aren't bigots)....hmmnnn.......hmmmmnnnnn.....Obama would be more of a fake president than which GOP candidate? Let's be honest....

What could be more hillarious than the so-call Religious Right endorsing a serial adulteror for the presidency? Or unwed teenage mother, Bristol Pa_lin preaching abstinence?

This has far less to do with Nancy Pelosi than it does about the satire of Stephen Colbert. You should see more of Colbert at work, or look into his Super PAC. He's unrelenting in his ridicule of the money flow and is holding politicians of all stripe's feet to the fire on this one.

The disclosure act doesn't stop the money flow. It "discloses" the people who are investing in each party.

I think Pelosi has enough dirt on her own front step, she needs to be quiet and go away. What she and her husband pulled with their tuna factory and denying those people minimum wage is just awful. We need someone honest and above reproach.
