Toilet Paper Harming Tigers Through Habitat Destruction, World Wildlife Fund Claims

Posted: 02/ 9/2012 12:10 pm

Using toilet paper may be a dirty business, but what about where your TP came from?

A new report from World Wildlife Fund suggests that American consumers and businesses are "inadvertently contributing" to deforestation in Indonesia and destruction of Sumatran tiger habitats by purchasing paper products made using fibers from Asia Pulp & Paper (APP).

APP is currently the fifth largest tissue producer in the world, according to a WWF press release, and is "rapidly expanding" into U.S. markets with paper products under the Paseo and Livi brands.

According to World Wildlife Fund estimates, APP and its affiliates have used "nearly 5 million acres of tropical forest on the island of Sumatra," for paper pulp since 1984.

Sumatran rainforests are home to the Sumatran tiger, a subspecies of Panthera tigris, which is currently listed as critically endangered by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Recent estimates suggest there are between 441 and 679 wild Sumatran tigers remaining.

WWF says they have contacted the 20 U.S. grocery chains who they believe to be the largest retailers of Paseo products, in an effort to convince them to discontinue sales.

Eight retailers -- including Kmart, Kroger and SUPERVALU -- have recently agreed to stop selling paper products made from APP fiber. The other 12, listed below, "did not respond or commit to stopping Paseo sales," according to WWF.

The CEO of Oasis Brands, which owns Paseo and Livi, said in a recent letter, "Continuous, rigorous auditing has proven APP products are made from sustainable sources and meet well-established sustainability standards."

In 2011, toymaker Mattel announced that it would no longer package Barbie dolls with paper products made by APP. An APP spokesperson said in response, "Asia Pulp and Paper applauds Mattel's commitments to recycling, wood, legality, protection of High Conservation Value Forest, respect for the rights of indigenous peoples and robust auditing and certification procedures. These principles very much mirror APP's philosophy and environmental commitments and we are delighted to see a major global toy manufacturer adopt the same."

Below, check out WWF's list of the 12 American retailers that have not committed to discontinuing sales of Paseo brand paper products. Click here to read WWF's full report.

Would it help if we used one sheet at a time?

I'm studying this at uni. It drives me mad. Companies like APP don't illegally log. They'd be shut down immediately if they did. This is about them not using the wood certification standard the environmentalists set up, FSC. Instead, APP uses other internationally recognised methods, whose standards were set at the Rio Earth Summit and maintained by the UN. Don't be tricked. This has got NOTHING to do with tigers. It's about duping well-meaning westerners into donating and backing an FSC monopoly. The tigers angle is just to get your interest...it's emotive, irrelevant junk, which is why those will the ability to operate at the right level choose to ignore the environmentalists, who are, in my view, single-issue extremists. By the way, APP just funded a water purification plant for millions of people forced to drink sewage - they're hardly evil. Don't believe everything you read...no matter how much you like tigers.

I don't mind using CFL bulbs at all. Just make sure they are shielded.

And I have been using Small Steps tp and 7th Generation paper towels for a couple years now and they work just fine.

In addition to not wanting to kill tigers to wipe my behind, I don't really want to kill a tree for that anywhere.

Paying a little extra for some TP or any paper product is fine by me, if it is a sustainable green product.

Obama has made us use his stupid ObamaBulbs now he wants to take our toilet paper from us.
I guess 1984 came a little late. But it is certainly here.
11:42 AM on 02/10/2012
Yes, that is so the point of this article- to convince people to stop using toilet paper, and because Obama said so. You don't miss a thing!

Thank you.

It was Bush who made you use those bulbs. Not Obama! Is that moniker an idication of how many brain cells are being used? Why would ANYONE be against saving money?
09:50 AM on 02/11/2012
I have to turn on my ObamaBulb about 20 minutes before I actually want to use it because it takes that long to warm up and get bright enough to read. I hate ObamaBulbs. Obama could have stopped this from becoming law if he wanted to. Saving money is not a high priority for me.

I can think of another plant, that can be used for this paper production and grows 20 times faster then trees. Oh ya, that's right it's illegal.

Sorry but I'm not going to use fern leaves or the Sears catalog for that matter!
08:02 AM on 02/10/2012
No need. Just buy 100% recycled toilet paper or FSC-certified. Its easy to find and is tiger-friendly.
11:29 AM on 02/10/2012
And don't forget it costs three times as much.

Are you here only to agitate? If you are really Mr. One Percent, please buy up some of that rainforest and hire some anti-poaching teams and rangers so it can be protected. Create some jobs.

Noooooo. The point is: we don't have to destroy Indonesian rainforest to make toilet paper. There are other sources including recycled paper and hemp.

And ironically they invented toilet paper.
02:28 AM on 02/10/2012
If toilet paper is endangering tigers, they need to quit using it.
01:29 AM on 02/10/2012
Possibly the Tigers will get wipe out as well. Wiping out the Tigers, Forest, and Americans that is very good paper. The people who create these Head Lines need to be drug tested.
01:22 AM on 02/10/2012
I have been readindg some of the posts and with all the doom and gloom in the news at least this is getting some funny comments!! lol Have a good day everyone and remember when you wipe think of the endangered tigers!
01:17 AM on 02/10/2012
Excuse my mistake! I meant to write corn cobs. For those that don't get it, that is one of the tools they used in place of toilet paper many moons ago.
