Obama Approval Ratings Rise Tracks Increasing Consumer Confidence

Obama Approval

First Posted: 02/10/2012 3:35 pm Updated: 02/10/2012 3:57 pm

WASHINGTON -- On Thursday, the Gallup Daily tracking poll marked a symbolic milestone. For the first time in more than a month and only the third time since last July, Gallup reported an approval rating for President Barack Obama (49 percent) that was slightly higher than his disapproval rating (46 percent).

On Friday, the Rasmussen Reports automated tracking survey marked a similar landmark. It showed Obama's approval rating at 50 percent or greater nationwide for the fifth consecutive day, a popularity not matched on the Rasmussen poll since January 2011.

The two daily tracking surveys are not alone. National telephone polls released in the past week by Fox News, ABC News and the Washington Post, Ipsos/Reuters, and the Democratic Party-affiliated Public Policy Polling (also sponsored by the website DailyKos and the Service Employees International Union) have all found increases in Obama's approval rating since October. Most of the increases range between 4 and 6 percentage points; the Ipsos/Reuters survey found a smaller rise.

2012-02-10-Blumenthal-obamaapprovalaverages1.png

The improvement since the fall has also been evident in state polls, including such likely battlegrounds in the general presidential election as Ohio, New Hampshire, North Carolina and Virginia.

Given the recent upward blip in the two national daily-tracking polls, some have looked for explanations in the events of the past week, particularly last Friday's Labor Department report of a rising employment rate. While positive economic news is the most likely reason for Obama's improving job rating, the upward trend in his ratings did not begin in February. In fact, most of the surveys have tracked a gradual increase in Obama's ratings that began in late October.

The HuffPost Pollster chart, based on all available public polls, shows a slow, steady rise of roughly five percentage points in the president's job approval rating since it hit its all-time low in early October.

2012-02-10-Blumenthal-ObamaApproval2.png

The longer-term increase in Obama's approval rating parallels five months of increases in several survey-based indexes of consumer confidence. Specifically:

Of course, the overall economic mood remains gloomy. On the Gallup surveys, for example, far more Americans still say that economic conditions nationwide are getting worse (58 percent) than say they're getting better (36 percent) -- though the positive number has more than doubled, from 18 percent, since the fall.

And despite big increases since October, the president continues to receive net negative ratings on "the economy" (44 percent approve, 53 percent disapprove) and "creating jobs" (44 percent approve, 51 percent disapprove) in the most recent ABC News/Washington Post survey.

The main point, however, is that the rising tide of consumer optimism directly parallels the upward trend in Obama's overall job approval rating. That result underscores the promise and the peril for the Obama administration in 2012. Continuing economic recovery will likely further boost his approval ratings and his chances in the November election. Yet we have seen temporary increases in consumer confidence before -- most memorably in January 2010 -- that quickly ebbed in the face of later negative economic news.

Either way, the economic trends of the next six to eight months are likely the most important factor in determining whether Barack Obama wins a second term in November.

This morning while watching the senate budget hearings on transportation spending, I found that the mindset of the conservative base has no concern for with the best interest nor sensible direction of this government. No funding for transportation, to create the high speed rail system, talking about the subsidizing of this. Yet they'll keep on subsidizing the oil companies that are making record profits. We know who they serve. "IT'S NOT THE PEOPLE" They go to the highest bidder! For all of those who continue to send these Judus to represent them in Washington D.C "SHAME ON YOU"

BiznessLady what a potty mouth you have and not to bright as I am not a dude. So much for reading comprehension on your part. And you best check Obama just hit the seniors with a cut again!!!! And I never have denied the republicans wrote the bill but it did not mean Obama had to sign it to make it a law ... that is when Obama the chump sold us out and trashed his legacy. And with your attitude I wonder if you know or understand what ban together means because your own actions more or less show how Obama leadership is ... out of control and dangerous and at least he hasn't got a potty mouth lol wonder if your foul post will make it past the mods LOL

If and when cuts in ss and medicare occur it will be because of republicans not dems.

50 billion extracted from medicare is the amount republican funded HMO'S are stealing from the medicare money for the elderly.PERIOD.
Good for you Obama, lock the thieves up.

Your enemy is not the middle class. Left right politics are theater.
If you want to know the truth, follow the money trail to the top ) the private banks that own the criminal federal reserve. This and other central banks across the planet are owned and controlled by a small group of extremely wealthy and powerful people that control government and nearly all media across the planet. This is why they want do desparately to control the flow of information on the Internet ( our last uncorrupted information source).
We all need to end this reign of financial terror from our world. A great start would be to end the federal reserve. Until we take back control of our money and information resources, we will continue to careen towards an oppressive fascist state worldwide. So what are YOU going to do? Obama either can't or won't address it. He has deep banking ties, it is public knowledge. Neither will the other Neocons. The only guy Sven talking about the monumental problem is Ron Paul

I agree Ron Paul has some good ideas, but he is against Social Security and Medicare, and because of that alone, most Dems and Reps won't vote for him.
and he wants to drastically cut back the size of the military and military spending - the Right's Holy Grail - and none of the Reps would vote for him based on that alone...
he means well and seems quite likable, but his base is way too small for him to get elected.

Just because he does not feel it is constitutional, if you look at his platform you will see he has it there but Paul plans to pay back what funds we stolen from it. He is not going to cut that program as he knows the people who paid into it are depending on it.
And if anyone would ever read his platform instead of getting second hand information you might find he also has budgeted for Human Services for four years too which covers help with food stamps and welfare too.
And people are sick of the wars RON PAUL gets more donations from all the armed forces then any other person running. And frankly why are we spending billions upon billions on MIC like Dyncorp who were caught doing human trafficketing in Bosnia? Is this why we are spending billions with them? The wars are breaking us and not making us welcome because of that so I rather see our troops home and if countrys need help we can give them Dyncorp or Blackwaters phone number and they can pay for their help.

Actually, for me and a lot of people i know it's been very good under Obama. Sorry not everybody hates him like you do. Sorry not everybody has the same voting points that you do. But the fact is, about half the country is pretty supportive of his work. Only 10% of the other half even entertains the though of a RP candidacy.

RealClear politics who reports on ALL major polling, shows Obama beating the sox of each of the current GOPers.....by "no sweat" margins.

His approval rate is increasing daily.

Congress has fallen from a "high" of 13 to 12....

It doesn't matter the rightwing rhetoric, the Faux news garbage, what Boehner or McConnell say or the right wing pundits. No matter how much bashing, no matter how much hateful rhetoric coming from the mouths of the current "candidates".......Obama is going to win...huge.....and Congressional Republicans will be decimated...and those Dems who sat by saying nothing will be replaced.

The uninformed, peripheral Republican voters from the rural Red states will join in with the fear mongering of 'Chicken Little' and the 'Sky is Falling' being promoted.

Many farmers, young families, senior citizens enjoy the sounds of words such as....Be Self Sufficient..No Federal assistance...Less Government.

Farmers sign up for their farm subsidies checks, the families take their tax deductions for each child, Senior Citizens accept their Social Security and Medicare benefits (as well they should...they deserve them)...Yet none seem to be aware that they are all recipients of Government social programs. They stand in those political rallies and say...NO ENTITLEMENT PROGRAMS! What the heck do they believe they are participating in?

Remember the old fable of the turtle and the scorpion? The scorpion asks the turtle to let him ride on his back across the river. The turtle objects because he informs the scorpion he expects the scorpion to sting him if he should be so kind. Scorpion says, of course I will not do this, if I sting you, I will surely die. You must survive for me to survive. So the turtle accomodates the scorpion. Half way across the river the Scorpion stings the Turtle. As the Turtle dies, he inquires...why did you do this...we are both going down. The Scorpion responds...simply because that is what I do.

Just when you think the S.S. Obama might be heading towards calmer seas...he unleashes a Poseidon-like wrath on the religious freedoms of millions of voters, roiling the political oceans. Hurricane Obama also unwittingly awakened millions of Catholics to the fact that that apparently, loss of religious freedom and abandoning the seperation of Church and State was among the hidden items when Nancy Pelosi famously noted "we won't know what's in the bill until it passes."

These polls do not reflect the mood after the recent SECRETARY LEVEL decision to force religious organizations to pay for services they oppose, nor the possibly even MORE foolish attempt to arbitrarily force those costs onto the insurance companies...which will only then get pushed onto the religious organizations anyways.

In fact, the President's actions gave greater equality and freedom to millions of voters. Those voters now have the option, the choice of their actions. And in no way could I have supported a President strongarmed by the head of a foreign state, in this case Vatican City, to compromise the rights of the American Citizen and that leader'ss attempts to subvert the Constitution.

I wish I had more faith in the American electorate, but they seem to have the attention span of a fruit fly, and this election looks likely to be a battle of the super PACs and their extremely negative ads.

The almost unbelievably low quality of the Republican field will definitely give some "independent" (a word which seems to mean "fickle; having the attention of a fruit fly" in this usage) pause, however, so there IS hope.

I like Romney.
He cleaned up tons of political curruption in MA, aggressively audited the Big Dig which led to tens of millions of dollars returned to the state, did not legally challenge the SJC approval of gay marriage, and was responsible with taxes.

Many don't like how he raised fees, but at least fees only impact the people using those services which I call "fairness."

Oh noes! He's rich! Duh, show me a poor politician running for President.

He will say anything and pander to the most clueless elements of the Republican Party to get elected.

He's not just rich (and in the top 1,000th of the top 1%); he's OUT OF TOUCH. He doesn't care about the very poor, because "they have a safety net" (which he's also trying to dismantle, what there still IS of it). And he wanted to just "let the foreclosure crisis "run it's course" (because it's "JUST A MARKET CORRECTION").

I could go on, but have to go to work.
