Obama Tells Gay Donors More Work To Be Done

Obama Gay Rights

By ERICA WERNER   02/ 9/12 08:18 PM ET  AP

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama told gay and lesbian supporters at a big-ticket fundraiser Thursday that there's more work to do to ensure fairness for all, but he said he "couldn't be prouder" of his track record for them.

Citing accomplishments like overturning the ban on gays serving openly in the military, Obama said the remarkable thing is how readily the public has gone along.

"The perception was somehow that this would be this huge ugly issue," Obama said of his decision to undo the "don't ask, don't tell" policy on gays in the military.

"Since it happened – nothing's happened," he said.

Obama made the remarks to around 40 gay and lesbian donors who paid $35,800 each to see him speak at a private home in Washington.

The event came on the heels of a decision by a federal appeals court in California to strike down that state's ban on gay marriage. Obama, who supports civil unions but has stopped short of embracing gay marriage, made no reference to that development or his own views on the matter, which he's said are "evolving."

He boasted of his track record for gays and lesbians, mentioning promoting hospital visitation rights and equality in federal hiring in addition to "don't ask, don't tell."

"In some ways what's been remarkable is how readily the public recognizes this is the right thing to do," Obama said. But he said that "There's still areas where fairness is not the rule and we're going to have to keep on pushing in the same way – persistently, politely."

Co-hosts for the event included James Hormel, a gay activist appointed by President Bill Clinton as ambassador to Luxembourg, and Laura Ricketts, a Chicago Cubs co-owner who is gay. It was at the home of Karen Dixon and Nan Schaffer.

Well I'm still evolving on my support of you as a Presidential candidate, so I guess we're all gonna have to evolve really quickly before November if you hope to remain President (and no, I'm not foolish enough to think my one vote changes much, but I'm not alone in this sentiment, far from it.)

Gay man here. Are you NUTS! The right is debating birth control, one the leading GOP Presidential candidates equates gay men having sex to "man on dog".

This administration has done more for gay and lesbian people than any other President in HISTORY. In addition to no longer defending DOMA this justice department has announced today that it will no longer defend the opposition to same sex couples benefits in the military.

The President will get to the point of announcing his support gay marriage and yes the delay maybe an election tactic but so what.

Our push for equality is moving faster than any other group's push in my lifetime and if I had to choose a President who has accomplished the things I outlined above over President Reagan who allowed hundreds of my friends and thousand of other people I do not know to die of A.I.D.S. without ever even mentioning that it was happening. Or to choose the countless other idiot GOP politicians who continue to use my life as a punchline for votes. The choose is crystal clear. President Obama isn't the lesser of two evil he is a great President and will be a greater President in a second term.

With love & respect I hope you will not sit out this election and seed your own interest because everything you want has not been done yet.

Sorry, I don't enjoy my rights being used as a political ploy to gain power. Feel free to be a pawn if you choose, I refuse.

If you want equality like I do, you have to go with a candidate that actually believes in civil liberties and stands up for them even when it is unpopular. Obama has proven to be insincere.

I'm by no means an Obama enthusiast, but I do appreciate the accomplishments we've made under his administration, and I'll vote for him over Santorum, Romney, or Gingrich without any pangs of guilt. An imperfect advocate is better than a devoted enemy. Like many, I sincerely hope that his "evolution" will miraculously accelerate after he's reelected, and that he will come out in favor of repealing DOMA and passing GENDA. I also hope that he'll have a Congress willing to assist him in those endeavors, which is possible given how badly the GOP has stepped in it since 2010. I also hope that, while becoming a bolder advocate for equality, he doesn't also become bolder in vexing me on other issues (war, privacy, extrajudicial executions, civil liberties, etc.) My assessment of his presidency is still evolving.

I'm not one of those gay guys who thinks that the gay rights movement shouldn't be so focused on gay marriage; I think it should be worked on while we continue to work on other issues. However, $35,800 a plate makes it clear why gay marriage is seen as the top issue.

And if I read the word "evolving" with respect to his views on gay marriage one more time I may lose my mind. It's not everyday your president admits to prehistoric beliefs.

while I agree in some ways Obama is like a turtle, slow and steady and he will win. He knows he can not just kill DOMA now. He's waiting for his 2nd term when he doesnt have to worry about running for office agian.

I agree - I think Obama does support gay marriage but has had to keep it quiet, but I'm also worried that after he wins (which I think he will), he'll then have to worry about how supporting gay marriage could hurt the Dems in the 2014 elections, so he may continue to stay silent.

My thinking on donating to Mr. Obama's campaign is "evolving".

We shouldn't underestimate the scope of the job or overestimate the power of the presidency. He has to be in office to stand up for our rights.

Witness the GOP's obstructive goal of making Obama a failed one-term president. Look at CPAC and of the Catholic Church's reaction to Obama's implementation of a Republican idea about contraception (Olympia Snowe 2001). Spend 5 or 6 minutes (if you are a glutton for punishment) listening to Santorum, Romney, or Gingrich speak about gay people to see what influences from the other side Obama is up against.

We should not underestimate the political capital Obama spent repealing DADT or the impact that repeal has on the perception of gay people, on Obama's "evolution", and on the full American society and culture.

Presidents come and go, our struggle continues. I'll take Obama over anyone who has held the office or is running for it. Ronald Reagan wouldn't even say the word "AIDS", let alone acknowledge that gay people exist (though Nancy liked the dresses they made). We've come a long way.

When a gay person is president, we'll likely feel that she also is not doing enough.

Ideals are nice, but is pragmatism is a necessity. Obama 2012!

I don't like his actions. He is a good speaker, but basically carried on with a Republican agenda. I want a President that isn't owned by the banks. I'm going with the Green Party.

I think he is saving DOMA for his 2nd term, where he wont have to worry about reelection. In his 2nd term he'll say "Tough ... you know what ... if you dont like it." and He'll kill DOMA. he killed DADT and many thought that would never happen. We must have him for 2 terms. MUST OBAMA IN 2012.

after he is in his 2nd term, he will push to have it removed due to it being unconstitutional. i dont know how, but he will. like he did with DADT.

Now we now know who the 1 percent are. It is disgusting with how the ecomony is that peopls would want to pay so much money in donations for an immoral cause. This just proves that the country is headed in the wrong direction.

I don't really get to have a 2 cents worth here, but from my POV he has done a decent job of getting as far as he has. Maybe he IS saving DOMA for the second term when it can't hurt him, but I also can't really blame him for that--it's not like he's had an easy time of it with his own psyche. His first term has been brutal in terms of abuse heaped on him.

It's hard to buy the "I'm still wrestling with it story". So I'm inclined to go with the political hesitation. But he gets my vote and my constant reminders to him and to my Reps to do the right thing.

We all get 2 cents.

I think the "evolving" mime is a red herring. First it is not the only thing Obama is saying...as a matter of fact he did not raise his personal views during this speech. However, I do feel that he will be a stronger advocate in his second term than he has been in his first.

Holding out for his clarity on this while ignoring what he has done is simply being an ungrateful constituent.

I will support Obama no matter what. A republican in the office of the POTUS, just would not be acceptable. I do commend his efforts to support GLBT rights, but his "evolving" attitude is a bit wishy-washy. Its like I support you, yet I really don't, but for political purposes, let me have your vote..

It looks like con job trolls took over this thread. Don't vote for Obama because he didn't give you everything you asked for. Vote for Santorum who will give you nothing you asked for and take away what you already have. Sounds like a deal.
