Rick Santorum Amplifies Faith In A Different Way Than GOP Rivals

Rick Santorum Faith

BRIAN BAKST   02/10/12 12:33 PM ET  AP

TULSA, Okla. — Rick Santorum stirs his ever-growing crowds when he promises to right a country awash in "immoral debt" and to replace an administration he argues has "callousness toward life and family and faith."

Of the GOP presidential hopefuls, Santorum is the most public and emphatic about his faith, drawing on his Catholicism and deeply held views on social issues as the foundation of his message. It serves to solidify his standing among religiously motivated voters – and subtly remind them of lingering reservations of opponent Mitt Romney's spiritual background.

The former Pennsylvania senator found a receptive audience Friday in Washington, when he addressed the Conservative Political Action Conference's annual gathering.

"Rights come to us from God," Santorum said, exhorting conservatives to go with the Republican candidate who presents the clearest contrast with Obama and not reach for a hollow victory. "Government's one job is to protect those rights."

When the GOP field was at its fullest, several candidates were fighting to be the favorite of religious conservative voters. Now, Santorum is moving to consolidate that wing of the party, which could make him a force in places like Alabama, Kansas, Oklahoma and others on the upcoming primary calendar.

His Southern swing, which ended Thursday with a stop at Oral Roberts University, followed a stunning three-state sweep Tuesday in Colorado, Minnesota and Missouri powered in part by his support among evangelical voters.

At the Christian liberal arts college, Santorum said his GOP competitors don't seem "particularly comfortable" talking about faith issues like he does.

He welcomed questions about his unbending views against abortion and gay marriage, using the latter to blast a federal appeals court ruling striking down California's voter-approved ban on same-sex marriage. He lashed out repeatedly at the Obama administration for a new rule requiring religious schools and hospitals to provide insurance coverage for birth control to their employees. President Barack Obama on Friday announced an update to the rule to calm critics.

Santorum addressed the issue his speech Friday, delivered before Obama's announcement.

"He's now telling the Catholic Church that they are forced to pay for things that are against their basic tenets and teachings," Santorum said. "It's not about contraception. It's about economic liberty."

On the road, Santorum also offers a window into his religious underpinnings when a self-identified Democrat asked how his Catholic roots and his opposition to Obama's signature health insurance law were compatible given Pope Benedict XVI's view that health care is a human right.

"I believe that you have an obligation to approach every issue in public life as I do from the standpoint of both faith and reason. My conscience was formed as a result of my life experience primarily through faith," Santorum answered. "I bring that to the table. Yes, that's who I am."

He added: "I have an obligation not to just look at things that way but also to bring reason. I always think if your faith is true and your reason is right you'll end up at the same place."

Gingrich is also Catholic, but social issues aren't as integral to his campaign. Paul, a Baptist, mentions religion in passing as a way to make a point about liberty.

Worries about Romney's Mormonism persist in some segments of the GOP even if they are less pronounced than in his 2008 bid. During that stunted campaign he delivered a major address intended to soothe concerns about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Voters showing up at Santorum events say his willingness to make faith central to his campaign make him more attractive.

"His values are my values," said Valerie Benton, a retired teacher from Edmond, Okla. "It's not like he's forcing his beliefs on anybody."

Such empathy shows through when Santorum employs what has become a favorite rhetorical device. He fondly quotes the Declaration of Independence to stress America was a nation founded on faith and its people are "endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights." He lowers his own voice when he gets to "Creator" and his crowds fill it in with gusto.

Santorum scoffs at suggestions that his focus should be elsewhere in a race driven by economic issues. "Strong families and building a strong family unit is good for the economy," he'll say.

As the campaign moves on, Santorum shows no signs of altering his message. His first stop after the three-state sweep was a gathering of Texas pastors. They laid their hands on the candidate to pray for his future success and for the continued health of his youngest daughter, who was temporarily hospitalized for a respiratory illness a couple weeks ago.

Santorum told the pastors that he wasn't running to be pastor in chief, but he suggested that religion needed to play a bigger role in public life.

"You guys could do a little better than you are right now," Santorum told the pastors.

They erupted in laughter.

Obama has yet to keep any promise, other than the "unspoken" one, which is to usher this country even further down the road to socialism. He's about the fly the American flag at half-mast for the death of a celebrity, could we be any more disrespectful to our military? The military that he so obviously disdains...Santorum is for bringing morality and conscience back to public office, how can that be a bad thing? Was that not the basis for this country's founding? How does his belief in God create any more of a problem than Obama's belief in his own superiority? Obama believes that Obama knows what's best for my healthcare, and that all Americans should be equal in that we should "share" the wealth. Sorry buddy, by my constitution says that I can be and have anything that I work hard enough to be and to have. No where in there does it say that I then have the responsibility of making sure that those who don't work hard enough have the same.

Santorum is prepping for his own televangelist reality show.

You can see it in the darkened glaze in his eyes, the way his voice rises and falls when emotionally speaking of everyone else's immoral behavior (shudddddder and quake) and how much he relished having all those haaaaands on him while he did his recent faux-savior routine.

You could almost see his imagined vision of a golden, glowing laurel wreath hovering above his head.

Santorum says the Bible says a Man and his wife should only have sex if they are procreating, no birth control so abstinence if you don't want anymore children, no jobs for single women if they have sex, menopausal, divorced - no sex! What are the guys like Santorum, Priests, Perry, etc. do do? Well as long as it's not sex with your wife - here's a solution for you:

Santorum's CPAC crowds real Christian values:

In my state we have 50,000 churches, one for every 600 residents. Why on earth would we need a president forcing his Catholic religious predjudices down out throats and using the power of the presidency to do it? We have ample religious professionals to consult if we feel the need of religious guidance. I want the next president to focus on jobs, jobs, jobs and leave my faith isssues to me and my chosen spiritual leader.

That is some heavy handed rhetoric Rick and I sure hope you can back those comments up with some examples/facts.

No civility, ethics and virtue need to play a bigger role in public life.

Ms Valerie should wake up. He is forcing his beliefs on everybody.
First they came for the communists, and I said nothing because I was not a communist;
Then they came for the trad unionists and I said nothing because I was not a trade unionist
....
they have been attacking the so called "socialists" and the "unions" as well as the latinos. It will not be long before they begin to turn on select christian religions because they don'tbelieve the right way.
Oh, wait, hasn't he picked on Romney for being Morman?

Why did he wait until Obama became president to raise the issue of debt, Obama, the one who is paying off Bush's astronomical credit card? Did he just wake up? Or are certain people just blaming Obama for everything, hoping every voter is as ll-informed as Fox anews watchers?

"Rights come to us through God," Santorum says.

Rights do NOT come to us through God. We have them because a group of men in the 1700s sat and began to create US law. Rick would like it to be a very mysterious process - but it wasn't. And since when is debt "immoral?" Debt doesn't have a conscience to violate. Rick practices religious dog-whistling.

Wait, this seems sooo familiar....

Que Ann Coulter: Our debt is better than theirs..(can that be far behind?)

Hey Rick, explain how George W Bushs debt, remember him, the guy you supported, and voted for twice, ...his 2 unpaid for wars, that he hid off budget, and pretended wasn't part of the debt, like magic money...how was that debt moral?
C'mon, you remember...
The debt that President Obama now honestly counts as part of the debt...Hmmmmm?
