Dictator Yearbook: Photos From Then And Now

Dictator Yearbook

First Posted: 02/11/2012 12:18 pm Updated: 02/14/2012 2:13 pm

On the first anniversary of the ouster of Egypt's former president Hosni Mubarak and less than a year after the likes of Muammar Gaddafi and Kim Jong Il met their makers, HuffPost World takes a look back at happier times for some of the world's worst autocrats.

Below, compare now-and-then photographs of the heads of regimes in the dictator yearbook.

While several dictators have attempted to stave off the effects of aging -- Gaddafi reportedly received belly fat injections in his face and wore makeup, while some have pointed out Putin's suspiciously taut face -- it looks like many of them have missed the mark in preserving their youthful complexions.

Sadly, the list of recent dictators is not exhaustive. Happily, many of the most brazen offenders won't be around to make it to any high school reunions.

Can you guess the identities of the young men below? How have the pressures of ruthlessly ruling a country changed them?

So many moronic comments. Congress supported Bush. Obama is experiencing stalemate after stalemate with a Republican Congress adamant in defiance no matter what the cost to the American people. Millions of people suffered under the monsters above. Get serious.

I'm starting to wonder if the Arab Spring was just the conclusion to dictatorships in general. As the dictator gets old, he gets vulnerable, paranoid, and slow.

Where is Canada's Harper? He deserves to be here with the democratic dictatorship he is running.

The poor, working and middle class have lousy lobbyists, unlike the wealthy who have the best that money can buy.

Sounds like a sore losers who can't accept the fact that his view is not shared by the majority.
02:29 PM on 02/12/2012
LMAO, majority.

Since when is a majority declared when less than half the population voted and of those Haper barely got half of them to vote for him.

Oh right, the corporatists, wealthy do not want the majority of us to vote. Every person who does not vote in essence gives his or her vote/voice over to a lobbyist and since corporatists and the wealthy can afford the best money can buy, guess where the power goes.

The corporations and wealthy have had a plan or interest in disenfranchising voters to this end.

The poor, working and middle class have lousy lobbyists, unlike the wealthy who have the best that money can buy.

And thanks to GW, the worst dictator of them all, the one who gassed his own people, Saddam, is dead and buried.
03:09 PM on 02/13/2012
Saddam was put in place by the CIA and given that gas by the US. He didn't consider Kurds to be "his" people.
03:17 PM on 02/13/2012
Nor do the kurds consider themselves Iraqi's.

The know-how and material for developing chemical weapons were obtained by Saddam's regime from foreign firms.[22] The largest suppliers of precursors for chemical weapons production were in Singapore (4,515 tons), the Netherlands (4,261 tons), Egypt (2,400 tons), India (2,343 tons), and West Germany (1,027 tons). One Indian company, Exomet Plastics (now part of EPC Industrie Ltd.) sent 2,292 tons of precursor chemicals to Iraq. The Kim Al-Khaleej firm, located in Singapore and affiliated to United Arab Emirates, supplied more than 4,500 tons of VX, sarin, and mustard gas precursors and production equipment to Iraq.[23]

Because he was twice democratically elected by the American people as hard as that is to swallow.
08:50 AM on 02/12/2012
Democratically elected alright.... but he did more damage than any of Americas pet dictators..!
What does that say about the judgement of those who elected him..?
Electing him once can be put down as a mistake... but reelecting him... gulp..!
