Last night's Second Saturday Art Walk was damn near Basel-worthy.
Galleries overflowed with fresh new work from insane beadwork at NOW Contemporary Art Projects to classic-yet-offbeat oil paintings at David Castillo Gallery.
Did everyone catch the video of the woman painting with her nether regions at Pan American Art Project's "The Naked Truth"?
For purists, however, art walk is definitely morphing into something new.
The proliferation of watering holes like Lester's and Wood Tavern is a welcomed change as fewer and fewer galleries are hosting their own open bar.
But disappointingly, there are now just as many retail spaces as worthwhile galleries, from the chic design trinkets at Elemental to the urban art of Kawaii Universe.
And for the first time, there was a sound stage at the food truck lot adjacent to David Castillo Gallery.
So as we all navigated around food trucks hawking funnel cakes and stores-disguised-as-galleries, speakers blared Wu-Tang Clan's "C.R.E.A.M," underscoring the vibe of the night: "Cash rules everything around me/ Dollar dollar bills, ya'll."
But despite the encroaching commercial vibe, Second Saturday Art Walks will remain the cultural peak of Miami as long as there are thoughtful exhibits and as long as there's the occasional random spectacle like storm trooper DJs al fresco (photo below).
