2 Columbine Students Injured In Hammer Attack By 14-Year-Old Student

P. SOLOMON BANDA   02/13/12 09:08 PM ET  AP

DENVER — Authorities were investigating a 14-year-old girl's actions before they say she attacked two students with a hammer at Columbine High School in the first assault with a weapon since the deadly shootings there in 1999.

Investigators Monday were trying to gather additional details, including where the girl got the hammer, said John McDonald, Jefferson County School District's executive director of security and emergency management. The Jefferson County sheriff's office – the same agency that investigated the shootings nearly 13 years ago – is also working to determine whom the girl spoke with before the attack.

It was unclear what sparked the attack Monday morning at the school outside of Littleton, about 13 miles southwest of downtown Denver.

The 14-year-old targeted a 15-year-old girl in a hallway leading to bathrooms, Jefferson County sheriff's spokeswoman Jacki Kelley said.

Aaron Flowers, 16, told Denver television stations that the 15-year-old was struck in the hand. He said he also was hit in the hand and ribs while trying to grab the hammer from the attacker, after another friend pushed the attacker down.

The victims were expected to recover fully from their injuries, sheriff's officials said. They were taken to a hospital and later released.

Flowers said the girls had had problems before. He didn't immediately return a message from The Associated Press seeking comment.

Kelley declined to release additional information, saying the attack remained under investigation.

The Littleton high school was the scene of one of the worst school attacks in U.S. history when students Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold opened fire on April 20, 1999. They killed 12 classmates and a teacher and wounded 26 others before killing themselves in the school's library.

The attack had a deep impact on the nation's law enforcement community, which developed new tactics for dealing with "active shooters." Schools developed ways to prevent bullying and added measures for school safety that included adding metal detectors, fences, ID badges, dress codes, security patrols and surveillance cameras.

Since the 1999 shootings, unarmed students and teachers have taken active roles in confronting attackers at schools when possible.

In February 2010, a math teacher on sidewalk patrol at a middle school tackled a gunman who opened fire with a bolt-action rifle, wounding two students. Other teachers joined in to restrain the gunman at Deer Creek Middle School, which is less than two miles from Columbine.

McDonald said students at Columbine grew up with the knowledge of the 1999 shootings but there's no indication that the latest attack is related.

"It's our history, not our legacy," he said.

Most teenagers today are faced with obstacles of gaining acceptance from their peers, who are sometimes very unforgiving. To help individuals who are being subjected to spiteful and cruel treatment, schools should adopt a zero tolerance policy against bullying, and have an environment where all students feel welcomed, not fearful to come to. Having kids myself I find myself worrying about their safety from time to time. However, I stumbled upon this blog the other day which tells how a mother overcame a tragedy and found an amazing way to keep her kids safe. Check it out http://www.tsue-thatswhatshesaid.com/2011/08/your-childs-safety-your-piece-of-mind.html

the girl involved and the mother have both cried out for help . and this is well documented in several police reports. the girl with the hammer weighs less than 100 lbs. flowers claims to be bench pressing 300+lbs as a sophmore the two other girls involved one has to be close to 200+ lbs . to a freshman these people telling her there going to get her (jump her). has to be a scary thing . after telling the powers that be that she was looking for something to protect her self from these kids sent her back to class . whos fault is this really. the truth will come out.

I just want to say that I go to this school. And all you who make jokes, shame on you. Columbine is a safe school. This would not have been in the news if it wasn't for Columbine's history. This girl was a good kid. She still is. However, she was pushed too far, and I understand that.

"Investigators Monday were trying to gather additional details, including where the girl got the hammer"
ummmm ya, maybe her dads tool box?
For those wondering, yes this stuff did happen back in the day...at my school in fact in the 80s. Hit another kid in the face with the hammer and permanently damaged his face, got away with it because the other kid had weapons in his trunk and came looking for a fight. Awful story, at least this one only had minor injuries.

I wonder... was violence so prevalent in schools back when recess and art classes were still as important as standardized tests?

It's time to start focusing on developing these kids emotional intelligence in school. No one sees the importance of learning the necessary tools to identify, understand, and channeling emotions until you have an encounter with one of these volatile individuals that don't have skills to manage what they a feeling.

There once was a kid in the slammer - - For assaulting in school with a hammer - - regrets were sewn, for a life now blown - - what a reject I am she would stammer.
03:40 PM on 02/14/2012
those of us that do tend to "stammer" are insulted by you insinuating we are murderers! lol! :p
05:55 PM on 02/14/2012
I h-h-h-h-hear you and no insinuation intended! And she's not a murderer, just a hammer wielding brat.

Look out Mike Moore will now have to make a documentary of hammer attaches.

Then he will want to outlaw hammers.

What’s this world coming to.
05:04 PM on 02/14/2012
Right. Notice how many people were gravely injured in the spurious hammer attack at Columbine? Can't say the same about the semi-automatics used in the 1999 attack can you? Nor can you fix a roof, hang a picture, pull a nail, etc with a gun, hammers, on the other hand, have a purpose beyond making living things dead. But keep making ridiculous arguments like that because those of us with even the slightest amount of common sense can see right through your "logic" here.
