Barack Obama Reelection Raising More From Small Donors Than In 2008

First Posted: 02/14/2012 12:05 pm Updated: 02/14/2012 1:17 pm

WASHINGTON -- The 2012 election is shaping up as the election of big money power.

Super PACs, accepting unlimited contributions from billionaires, millionaires, and corporations, have become a serious topic of debate during the Republican primary season where billionaires have provided crucial support for Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum."

But with the new system of unlimited money debuting this year, another fundraising development has been be overlooked: President Barack Obama's campaign is raising a higher percentage of its contributions from small donors than during the much-heralded small donor boom in the 2008 election.

According to an analysis by The Huffington Post, the Obama reelection campaign committee, Obama for America, pulled in at least 45 percent of its contributions from donors giving less than $200 during each of the fundraising quarters it was active in 2011.

In 2007-2008, there was only one quarter, from April through June 2008, during which the campaign pulled in more than 40 percent from these small donors. It never had a quarter or month where it raised 45 percent or more from small donors.

The Huffington Post's analysis examined contributions made directly to Obama for America and those transferred from the Obama Victory Fund, a fundraising vehicle that allows donors to give to both the presidential campaign committee and the Democratic National Committee's (DNC) campaign committee. The analysis did not cover the first quarter of 2011 or the years of 2009 or 2010 because the Obama reelection campaign launched in April 2011 and did little fundraising before then.

The influx of small donors is due in part to the 13 million-plus person supporter list built by the campaign in the 2008 election. This e-mail list has been used to pump small donations - as small as $3 at a time - from supporters using a variety of tactics including partisan appeals and contests to win time with the president. The common denominator of the appeals has been their personal nature.

Teddy Goff, the digital director for the Obama campaign, explained the key to small donor fundraising, which is largely done through the Internet. "The thing that helps us raise money is content that resonates with people that makes people feel connected to the campaign."

Goff told The Huffington Post the campaign team learned in 2007 and 2008 that donors giving $5 or $10 aren't looking for a transactional relationship. "These are people who feel emotionally invested in something bigger than themselves."

One of the campaign's most commented-on personal messages came with the subject line, "Hey." The message, which carried the president's name and signature, included a two-sentence request for small contributions before the end of the fundraising quarter, "About the deadline tonight: It matters. If you can, please give $3 or more today." The laid-back tone became the subject of mockery from political observers at the time, but it helped raise money.

The culmination of this effort has been the "Dinner with Barack" series of fundraising e-mails. Donors giving at least $3 were entered into an raffle to win a dinner with the president and the first lady. The winners were then cycled into the fundraising loop by sending a campaign e-mail telling other Obama supporters about their dinner and that they should enter the $3 donation contest.

Not all the solicitations came from personal appeals or contest announcements. Many also relied on the kind of partisan narratives that ordinarily drive small dollar donors. Recently, the campaign issued a fundraising appeal in response to a remark by Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney after he won the Florida primary, "While we celebrate this victory, we must not forget what this election is really about: defeating Barack Obama." Romney turned his statement into a fundraising drive by calling on his supporters to help him reach a $1 million goal for his "One-Term Fund."

The Obama campaign issued a quick response calling on donors to give to a "Two-Term Fund."

Campaign manager Jim Messina wrote in an e-mail to supporters, "Last night Romney summed it up in one line -- for them, it's all about beating one man and sending his family packing from the White House. Everything else the Republicans say or do is just means to that end."

The Obama campaign raised $2.5 million within three days of its response to Romney's remarks and, as of Feb. 14, the "Two-Term Fund" had received donations from 66,079 people totaling $3.18 million.

The number of donors to the campaign is staggering compared to the last election. According to numbers provided to The Huffington Post by the campaign, there have been 1,309,644 individual donors to the campaign. The campaign passed 1 million donors on Oct. 17, 2011, 189 days earlier than during the 2008 election.

The campaign stated when it hit the 1 million donor mark, that 98 percent of the donations received by the campaign came in increments of less than $250. This is somewhat misleading as it represents the amount given per donation, not per donor; some donors giving small amounts ultimately give more than $200 in the aggregate.

But if personal e-mails are the vehicles used to tap small donors, then the Obama Victory Fund is the key to reeling in the biggest checks. Donors can give up to $35,800 to the fund with $30,800 going to the DNC and $5,000 going to the Obama campaign. This has led to a big surge in donations above $10,000 to the DNC.

Even when combining the Obama campaign and DNC fundraising numbers, the increase in small donors in 2011 is still evident. In both third and fourth quarters of 2011, small donors accounted for more than 41 percent of donations to the combined fundraising total of the Obama campaign and the DNC. Both of the quarters featured a higher percentage of small donors than the Obama campaign raised, by itself, during any quarter in 2007 or 2008.

Comparing donations to both the president's campaign committee and the DNC in 2011 to 2008, however, is difficult. There was only one full quarter in 2008 where the president was raising money alongside the DNC. That quarter, July through September, coincided with the Democratic National Convention and boasted the biggest fundraising hauls for both the Obama campaign and the DNC. During this period, small donors accounted for 29 percent of all contributions to both committees combined.

The remaining crop of Republican primary candidates is a mixed bag when it comes to small dollar donors. The leading fundraiser, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, raised 9 percent of his contributions from small donors in 2011. Texas Rep. Ron Paul raised the most from small donors, 52 percent, while former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich pulled in 49 percent of his donations from people giving under $200.

Former Sen. Rick Santorum received about 30 percent of his contributions from small donors. Gingrich and Santorum have, however, seen their small donor numbers rise as both of their fundraising picked up in the months leading up to the Iowa caucus.

...and when you take into account Paul, Newt, and Rick's total donor contributions are miniscule compared to Obama, making their percentage of small donor contributions even smaller, we really get a big picture that the majority of the non-rich population motivated enough to send money are behind the President.

I neglect to mention Rmoney because his small donor contributions are negligible. He  Read More...

It is ultimately up to Congress and state legislators to remedy the damage done by the disastrous Supreme Court ruling in 2010. This is why we need to stand together in the push for a constitutional amendment to restore our constitutional rights and give the democracy back to the people. Sign the petition for a constitutional amendment to overturn the Citizens United ruling (www.democracyisforpeople.org).

They are presenting Obama's fundraising numbers from small donors as exceptionally strong. No doubt they are, but think for a moment about what that says about fundraising in general. It says that it is exceptional for there to be a candidate for office who is chosen by small donors, or who gets as much as 45% of campaign money from small donors.

And now you know why no serious republican ran in this cycle. Now you know why the GOP has been hysterical. Now you know why the House is in reach and why we're going to hold or expand in the senate. And now you also know something else... because the GOP voted no of everything they get no bump from the recovery. Because they voted no on everything, they get benefit from success. Because they voted no on everything they are trapped in a lose lose, of betting against America, rooting against America, and hoping against America. That is the message we need to push. Small donations will account for about half of the president billion dollar take, just like before. And after the landslide, the President will be able to do two things. 1) claim a mandate, two landslides is a mandate, clearly. 2) ignore the GOP and jam through 8 years of legislation in 6 months. No more negotiating, ever. And while the GOP cries that it is unfair, that it is whatever, the President will get to say, we tried for 4 years and the NEVER voted yes on anything. We're not wasting any more time. And that folks, is how the GOP becomes irrelevant forever.

We don't worship him, we just know who the best person to be president is. He won a landslide election, and will win another landslide election in Nov. That landslide included Republican and Independent votes along with the Dem. vote.
So it would appear that the majority of Americans is in direct disagreement with you.

I love Mitt Romney's unwavering commitment claiming to be a “Pure Michigan” native. After all, he never resided permanently there after high school and most recently favored letting the state’s bedrock auto industry fall into bankruptcy. So as favorite sons go, if Michigan were Bedford Falls, I guess that would make him Mr. Potter. Too bad the rest of us are stuck in an alternative GOP reality in which traditional moderate conservatives like George Bailey were never born. But in honor of Mitt Romney going home again, here’s a funny YouTube video that peak into what’s going on in Obama’s Chicago home. Enjoy: http://tinyurl.com/6sevqsj

On January 23rd, the Obama administration charged former CIA officer John Kiriakou under the Espionage Act for disclosing classified information to journalists about the waterboarding of al-Qaida suspects.

The Obama administration has already charged more people — six — under the Espionage Act for alleged mishandling of classified information than all past presidencies combined. (Prior to Obama, there were only three such cases in American history.)

Ron Paul is supported by the troops. They donate the most to Ron Paul, more than any of the other candidates INCLUDING Obama.

Over a 1000 soldiers will be marching on Washington on Feb. 20 to show they're support!!!

Ron Paul would completely gut the VA and force soliders to purchase their own insurance which wont be nearly as qualified or specialized for the mental and physical trauma's of war as the VA.

Actually....Why even waste time in talking about what Ron Paul would do as President? It's never, ever happening. I really, really support the dude's views on ending the war on drugs, re-forming our criminal justice system to focus on rehabilitation rather than punishment, ending our military-industrial complex, restoring civil liberties, closing homeland security and whatnot but all of that doesn't matter when you hear his views on what health-care should be like and the elimination of a safety net, all regulations, taxes, and instituting year 2000 spending levels....Spending levels which aren't adjusted for inflation and population growth.

Paul's policies would lead to economic collapse and complete social upheaval....I'm sure they would have been really awesome in the 1800's though which is where the are from. Our society is just too complex and greedy now to run a complete 100% non-interventionist Government.

I mean..wow. It's now 3 years that the media is pushing the message that his base has vanished, from the left and from the center, from the East and from the West, from the middle class and from the poor. And now, as half time approaches, he's way ahead in the polls, and the base is donating as never before. What are we missing ? Maybe his healthcare reform wasn't that unpopular after all, maybe a few autoindustries are still out there, maybe the good old Keynesian theory that inspired the New Deal and the Marshall Plan, that same "socialist" theory that defeated communism, is still a valid recipe to expand the economy. Or maybe just a humble family man, with a thin resume, and with great intellect and common sense, is not as diliked as the pundits want us to believe.

First, barring some drastic change in current trends, the President is going to get reelected. The GOP primaries have basically spotlighted how weak the Republican candidates are and none of them have shown the ability to beat the President in the general election.

Second, the President's reelection fufills a horrible nightmare for the GOP.

President Obama remaining in office means that the drawdown of military forces overseas will continue with not only a projected end to hostilities in Afghanistan but also an end to the high related military expenditures. That combined with an improving economy will improve the federal budget significantly, weakening a key argument the GOP has against the President and Democrats. A second term for Obama may not be able to duplicate Bill Clinton's feat of creating surpluses in the budget as in 2000, but it will likely come close by force of circumstance.

Next, if the Supreme Court doesn't invalidate the health care reform act, then that will go into full effect in Obama's second term and show the nation the full benefits of the law, diffusing another major argument that the GOP has been using.

In other words, the act of the President remaining in office may shine a bright light on a number of issues that the GOP has been on the wrong side of, hurting their future election chances, particularly in the 2014 midterms and 2016 general election.
