Grammys 2012: Bon Iver Wins Best New Artist, Feels Conflicted About It

Bon Iver Grammys 2012 Best New Artist

Even though Bon Iver won two Grammys last night for their self-titled album, the awards show still makes lead singer Justin Vernon squirm.

"It's really hard to accept this award," he began his slightly awkward acceptance speech. "There's so much talent out here... and there's a lot of talent that's not here tonight. It's also hard to accept because you know, when I started to make songs I did it for the inherent reward of making songs, so I'm a little bit uncomfortable up here."

His words should come as no surprise to people who knew Bon Iver before they won the awards for both "Best New Artist" and "Best Alternative Album" (for those who haven't heard of 'Bonny Bear', no worries: a 'Who is Bon Iver?' Tumblr already exists). In an interview with the New York Times back in December, Vernon expressed his feelings about the Grammys even more forcefully than he did on stage.

"I don't think the Bon Iver record is the kind of record that would get nominated for a Grammy," he said then. "I kinda felt like going up there and being like: 'Everyone should go home, this is ridiculous. You should not be doing this. We should not be gathering in a big room and looking at each other and pretending that this is important.' That's what I would say."

It's not just the Grammys that offend him, though, but the entire arena of music awards shows. In a blog post last August, Vernon bashed the VMAs even more passionately.

"Why do we NEED this shit so bad? Why don't we just have MUSIC? DO music? soul? I don't know," he wrote, criticizing MTV for being about "the dollars."

He echoed that sentiment in the New York Times interview, where he came down on Grammys nominees by saying "98 percent of the people in that room, their art is compromised," as well as in his acceptance speech, when he thanked "all the non-nominees who've never been here and never will be here," alongside his friends, family, and the voters.

If you're wondering why Bon Iver didn't perform last night, just blame the band's integrity. The reason, again, goes back to the band's refusal to deal with an organization that would try to dictate their musical behavior. The band was asked to play with other acts that had "nothing to do with" their music," according to Billboard.

"We kind of said 'fuck you' a little bit and they sort of acted like they wanted us to play, but I don't think they wanted us to play," Vernon said. "Fuckin' rock 'n' roll should not be decided by people that have that job. Rock 'n' roll should be the fucking people with guitars around their backs."

Despite their skepticism, however, Bon Iver still managed to beat out United States, the Band Perry, J. Cole, Skrillex and Nicki Minaj for the Best New Artist prize.

Totally fair assessment by Justin Vernon. Until the Grammy's learn to recognize modern talent, they should expect to hear acceptance speeches like this one. http://ow.ly/bWtCm

I just found out who Bon Iver was or Bonnie Bear is what people thought they heard at the Grammy's. He's ok but this is another reason why I don't watch award shows. People I personally think should win, never do. I bet they ignore Lana Del Rey next year:/

I stan for Bon Iver so hard I love him but I really don't get why he's winning Best New Artist when For Emma came out Forever ago...They should have given it to J. Cole. He's pretty good. Anyone but Nicki Minaj. My mum asked if Bon Iver was Bon Jovi's son. I can't believe they had Chris Brown perform twice but not this guy even once. Some of you are bloody ridiculous. He wasn't being pretentious at all he's just admitting that whilst it's nice that he's being recognised and awarded, awards aren't what motivate him to make music and he wouldn't have commited suicide without it. Ugh. Some of you are reaching so hard.

That category is a joke. How do "they" determine who is the best? Can't be record sales because year after year you see people up there accepting the award who you have never even heard of before. Then when you do get a little information about them, you find out that they've been releasing music for years.

Sure he's not a new artist, but he was still the most talented of the bunch. Good for Justin and company regardless. Oh and congratulations to all of the people who are now finding out about him. You deserve to listen to quality albums, go nuts with his.

Thank you for speaking my mind before I had the chance. I feel some insult seeing all these people asking who "Bonny Bear" is and when they say that "Nicki Minaj was robbed of that award." The industry would be in a much better state if all these money and fame-hungry self-proclaimed artists had half the talent and integrity Justin has.

It was so random that Bon Iver was nominated for this category....just as random as Arcade Fire winning album of the year in 2011

He's not new, so I agree with you there. However both he and Arcade Fire were the best of the nominees in the categories they were nominated for. A year later I'm still listening to The Suburbs and the self-titled Bon Iver album is played almost daily.
No one else in those categories remained as fresh, at least for me.

Do you mean The Suburbs?
11:51 AM on 02/16/2012
yeah, that was arcade fire's album name and they won the award.

Regardless of how you feel about his music, he kind of comes of sounding like a pretentious jerk... His record company submitted Bon Iver for the award. He went to the ceremony. There's no way to reconcile that information with the way he's behaving about this.

I actually thought he reacted appropriately
04:58 PM on 02/20/2012
well of course you did because you're a fan of Bon Iver
04:58 PM on 02/20/2012
I couldn't agree more. If he really didn't care about winning the award then he wouldn't be there

What a bunch of crap. He knows that the artist is submitted for consideration. If he doesn't want the accolades then he should tell his "people" to not waste their time trying to garner awards.

As long as Nicki Minaj didn't win I'm happy. But I've been a fan of Bon Iver for a couple years now. They are by far more talented than any other one of the nominees. This award and working with Kanye made them more mainstream, but they will keep their alternative vibe. Check out "The Woods" and "Holocene"

Bon Iver has been around since 2007. Anyone care to explain how a band that is at least 5 years old is considered a "new" artist?
03:21 PM on 02/13/2012
because "Best New Artist" for Grammy purposes means a artist who releases a LP with a major record label in that Grammy year. Their first album was independently distributed.

thanks I've been wondering the same thing

i first heard bon iver probably two years ago. the song was "for emma". truly a beautiful song. and that just sums up whats so special about bon iver. when you listen.... and i mean, listen. you really feel the honesty and heartfelt emotion in every tune. its def not for everyone. i love it and i'm very happy that more people can now be aware of this special talent. remember.... not everyone needs to love nickleback!! (did i go there?) haha!!
