Diane Aulger, Mom, Had Labor Induced To Let Dying Father See Daughter

By JAMIE STENGLE   02/13/12 05:50 AM ET  AP

DALLAS -- Diane Aulger was about two weeks from her delivery date when she and her husband decided there was no time to wait: Mark Aulger had only days to live, and he wanted to see his child.

Diane Aulger had her labor induced and gave birth to their daughter Jan. 18. When tiny Savannah was placed in his arms, Mark Aulger "cried, and he just looked very sad," his wife said. He died five days later from complications related to his cancer treatment.

The 52-year-old Texas man was diagnosed with colon cancer in April. He had surgery and, as a precaution, six months of chemotherapy, Diane Aulger said. With no signs of cancer showing up in follow up tests, the treatment seemed successful.

Then in November, Mark Aulger began having trouble breathing. By Jan. 3, he was sick enough to go to the emergency room. His wife said he was told the chemotherapy had caused him to develop pulmonary fibrosis, which causes scarring and thickening in the lungs.

Initially, the Aulgers were hopeful.

"He thought he'd be coming home in a few days with an oxygen tank," said Diane Aulger, who lives in The Colony, about 25 miles north of Dallas.

But on Jan. 16, the doctor delivered more bad news: Mark Aulger's condition was fatal. When Diane Aulger asked how long her husband had, the response was a sobering five or six days.

"Mark said, `I'd like to see the baby,'" the 31-year-old mother told The Associated Press on Sunday.

Their baby was due Jan. 29, and Diane Aulger had planned a natural childbirth, but when the doctor suggested an induced labor, she immediately agreed. She was already experiencing pre-labor symptoms, and they scheduled the birth for Jan. 18.

Hospital staff arranged for the Aulgers to share a large labor and delivery room.

"Our beds were side by side," Diane Aulger said.

Mark Aulger held his daughter for about 45 minutes after she was born. For the next couple of days, though, he was so tired he was only able to hold her a couple of times for a minute or so. She said he slipped into a coma on Jan. 21 and died two days later.

"I brought her home the night before he fell into the coma. It was just me and Savannah when he passed away," Diane Aulger said.

Along with Savannah, the Aulgers have two other children, ages 10 and 7. Diane Aulger also has a 15-year-old and a 13-year-old.

With her family's story getting much media attention in recent days, Diane Aulger said she's been heartened by the nice comments she's received from people.

She plans to blanket her home with pictures of her husband and said her children are already doing a good job of keeping his memory alive by talking about him.

"We're living day-to-day as if dad's still here," she said. "We know dad is here with us. They talk to dad. Mark was a very funny, funny dad."

Below are photos of the Aulger family the day of Savannah's birth:

It's fortunate that she was so close to her due date that inducing labor didn't put the baby in any danger. That was a very nice thing for her to do. I'm sure her husband died happy. My father-in-law passed away while I was five months pregnant. He knew we were expecting a baby and he was so excited. We named our son after him.

Any chance HP added this story to their site precisely to draw in anti-abortion proponents who would naturally spar with any pro-choicers that would make comments about the mother's age, number of children, income, etc to use as arguments for population suppression?

Has anybody asked the Republican Party if this was ok ? I understand that personal decisions about our families are now subject to review by a Republican Board of Governors.

That was a very generous thing to do. Heartbreaking story.

This is so sad Dad gets cure from cancer but dies from Chemo therapy, well I had someone die from Chemo therapy before and it is such a useless death. There has been so far 2 cures for cancer one that does not cause death from the cure. The truth is that Big Pharma does not want it out that there, there are better cures out there that causes no side effects at all.A Policeman from San Francisco who had twin daughters one had a tumor in her brain they used Chemo first and then found another doctor that actually cured the tumor but yet she passed on from the Chemo therapy that is what the Corner said .He actually went in front of Congress with this information and even had it video taped and put on the internet now you can not find it on the internet anymore. It is so sad that Big Pharma cares more for money than the life of even a child.

It's really sad, I agree. What is really shocking to me is that families who have put their kids through cancer treatments, and finally say "enough" once the child is cancer-free are being prosecuted for not continuing chemo as a precaution. This happened in MN, and now it's happening in MI. In the MI case, the drug the physicians want to give the boy (whose scans show no sign of cancer) is not recommended by the drug company for use in children. The case has been dismissed (last month), but the prosecutor filed a motion to continue the case. Hopefully it will not be revived.

No signs of cancer does not equal no cancer, FYI. In order to actually see a tumor, it needs to grow to a specific size. This is not magic, people. There is no special body scan that can look for traces of cancer cells (which is all it would take for regrowth, or metastasis). Numerous people are saved because of chemo. My grandmother pulled through breast cancer with chemo. Granted, not all doctors are equal in weighing risk vs. benefit, but there is benefit until we can find something better. If there was a true cure out there, it would not just be some conspiracy theorists that have their hands on it. If Pharma was all-powerful, the companies would be in business forever.

If the doctor felt it was safe, and pre-labor was already presenting, I see it as a good thing, for the mother and the rest of the family as well. I see all the children were there. I can see their concern and grief, and know they will remember this as long as they live. I remember the loss of my son like it was yesterday, over 23 years ago. As far as the decision to deliver early, I have known of cases where the doctor delivered babies early simply because he was going to be on vacation!

Right when I was having a bad day and feeling sorry for myself, I am reminded that my troubles ares so small. I hope the family is okay and able to deal with this as contructively as possible.

I would do it in a heart beat. She was already showing signs of pre labor so this just shoved it up a couple of days at most. But what valuable days.

Why didn't they seek help from Dr. Byrzinski? This Dr. has found away to treat cancer patients with more than 50% success rate. The FDA has been butting heads with this guy for decades, but Dr. Byrzinski has completely cured the most progressive types of cancer & the majority of his patients ended living cancer free. Of course the FDA has something to say about this because Dr.s spend so much money on radiation equipment Dr. Byrzinski treatments threaten them. Everyone should look this guy up. It's amazing!

Where is Dr. Byrzinski ?

@ZANESGIRL------>Dr. Burzynski
Dr. Burzynski is located in Texas, I think Dallas area, but I'm not sure. There was a documentary on Netflix on this guy & the cure he has found. He has been treating cancer patients since the early 70's. A lot of Dr.s do not like this guy but he has completely cured the most progressive types of brain cancer in children. Watch the documentary it's a very emotional. It starts out on a congressional hearing with a police officer & his twin daughter. The other twin had brain tumor & Burzynski cured the little girl but she died of radiation sickness from the chemo, that cop was in tears losing his daughter, but you'll see how the corrupt the FDA is & pharmacutical companies(as if the people already didn't know)

Burzynski is a charlatan and the "documentary" is a completely incredulous conspiracy theory.

I was not going to write anything but felt compelled. His spirit will live through that family pictured. The answer to suffering is compassion and reading this story I am left with nothing but compassion for them. Reach out to those whom suffer every day.I will do so in honor of this man and his family. With prayers and acts of forgiveness and kindness. Their is much pain in the world ,their is no need to create more with harsh judgements and false hatreds. Thank you for again showing me what is important ... love ,family and compassion. I will hold my own daughter and wife a little closer today.

This is a heart wrenching story that need not have happened.

These no good butchers and peddlers of poison, this man need not of died, if he only new of natural cures such as vitamin B17 and similar. Jason Vale: champion arm-wrestler … cancer survivor …do a search on this man. He got fed up of these butchers chopping him up and flodding his system with poisons only to see cancer come back again and again. After some research he found about B17 and its very high amounts in apricot seeds, the rest is history
12:54 AM on 02/16/2012
Since the early 1950s, a modified form of amygdalin has been promoted under the names laetrile and "Vitamin B17" as a cancer cure. In reality, laetrile is not a vitamin, and studies have found it to be ineffective, dangerously toxic due to its cyanide content, and potentially lethal.
12:06 PM on 02/16/2012
Is that why Jason Vale had thousands of people who took his advice and not a single complaint. The cynaide only becomes active when in contact with cancerous cells.

Toxic, thats what I call Chemo.

The big pharma companies are only intersted in profit not curing people.

The whole baby early thing was very cool, but what I really liked was seeing his family around him at the hospital. Sad as it may be, it gives the children a lot of closure seeing and understanding that life was kind of sucking for Dad in those final moments. Definately brought a tear to my eye.
