Hipsters vs. Immigrants: NYC's Newest Culture War (VIDEO)

First Posted: 02/13/2012 2:18 pm Updated: 02/13/2012 3:56 pm

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has crossed the great Atlantic to investigate the most (least) pressing culture war of our time: New York City's "hipster" community moving into the areas previously inhabited by immigrants.

In the above video, Miesko Kalita, an immigrant from Poland describes how his neighborhood of Greenpoint, Brooklyn, once inhabited by Polish and Latino immigrants, was overtaken by "people who consider themselves artists." Cut to skinny kids with scarves and asymmetrical bangs.

Some, like Kalita, attribute these hip migrations to re-zoning laws which have made it more expensive to live in parts of Brooklyn.

Kalita says there have been lots of "artistic happenings" and "strange haircuts" since these newcomers arrived. Once undocumented himself, Kalita concludes that, "They're definitely not illegal immigrants."

A woman with pink hair and cat eye sunglasses, presumably a member of one of the earliest waves of hip, decries the loss of "ethnic character" in the neighborhood. But Greenpoint isn't the first part of Brooklyn to be subjected to hipster sprawl.

Two years ago, the Canon-toting newcomers to Williamsburg, Brooklyn, clashed with the long-residing Hasidic community over the question of bike lanes.

"Groups of bicycle-riding vigilantes have been repainting 14 blocks of Williamsburg roadways ever since the city sandblasted their bike lanes away last week at the request of the Hasidic community," the New York Post reported.

What if you're a hipster immigrant?

"Funny Haircuts"? How can immigrants to this city and it's boroughs have such little sense of tolerance and cultural respect, that Is what they are asking for themselves, correct? & just so you know those "vigilantes" painted the bike lanes back due to several injuries caused by sharing that particular, and very busy, street. The only reason Hasidics wanted it to be removed is because they felt some women using the bike lane in summer months were "over exposed" a direct conflict to their religion. However, we all share these neighborhoods so someones religion shouldn't take precedence over safety. In this case not all spray paint wielding "skinny" white kids intend on causing mischief.

"Tolerance and cultural respect" for hipster haircuts? You gots to be kidding. Hipsters in their quest to be cool would probably find indifference (which is true tolerance) to their get-ups intolerable. Contempt for the common folk appears to be part of the hipsterr ethos.

I find Hipsters come and go. They don't stay for the long haul. Al they do is raise the rents for everyone else by moving in and out

These trust fun "artists" come from all over with their daddy's money and push out real Brooklynites. Go home...Brooklyn doesn't want you here! You can always tell an out of towner because they always go so hard to look like a hipster AND they don't know the other side of Brooklyn. The only train they ride is the L train (and G depending where). They think they're being "unique" "trendsetters," but they all dress alike and they are pricing out elderly people and families from living in the neighborhoods they grew up in. Hopefully they'll burn Daddy's money and go back home.

It was an Irish neighborhood before the Polish moved in and pushed them out. Things change. I am not a fan of Greenpoint but I just do not see the point of complaining about things changing. Move to Celebration Florida if you pine for the good ol' days.
I am much more offended by sprawling subdivisions paving over undeveloped land. But smacks of heresy in this country...

I remember Echo Park and Silverlake in LA being a Latino community then the hipster types moved in. Rent sky rocketed and has $ 4 coffee houses.

The same thing is happening in East Los Angeles in Boyle Heights. Come on hipsters get in here and raise my property values.

What annoys me is the "discovery" of Brooklyn. I was born here and have lived here for more than 40 years. I never knew it was missing. By all means come to Brooklyn, but respect its people (including immigrants of all backgrounds) and history. You don't discover a place that is home to 2.5 million people. You become aware of its existence

This is all due to the real estate crowd, they've turned NYC into a circus with the hype about BK & Manhattan. Both boroughs & the other 3, are great. Our society needs labels on everything nowadays. Brooklyn was great before the hipsters invaded it.

It would do you wonders to read about world economy. The debacle did not occur only here and not because of a president. IT is a result of mistakes in economics by a lot of countries, through many years that are only reflecting now. It is not because of the hipsters moving to the poor neighborhoods.

I do not think there is a worst type of people than Hipsters. Generally I despise anyone who tries that hard, but I have extra hatred for these people. In their pursuit of doing everything in the name of irony leads me to believe that they don't know what irony is. These are the people who were too lame to be emo. I would take the illegals any day. Sure you might be a victim of a stray bullet meant for an MS13 member, but at least you wont have to deal with a guy telling you the greatness of PBR.
Just wait until these people use daddy's money to lobby for minority status. That way they can tell you how hard it is being oppressed by "the man"

Then I must give you credit. I have an uncle that drinks PBR and Hamms. Those are two rough beverages. Then again, I like Old Crowe so I cant afford to be a drink snob.

I want to move to NYC but then I remember I'm not that pretentious and I don't have a trust fund. Kinda broke. My dream would be to move back to Europe somewhere... that was the best.

There are many non hipster communities in NYC.

I have no trust fund and moved to NYC and by no means am I pretentious. I just love this city and wanted to live here. I worked my ass off and saved up and moved here. I now have a little room in Brooklyn with no closet! But I love it, it's NYC.

I've seen neighborhoods change in places like Los Angeles and San Francisco. It's a double-edge sword. Nice to get the neighborhood cleaned up, but then all of the flavor is lost.

From my experience they actually seem to be very snobby and not tolerant at all, if you're not a hipster. When I was in NYC I got some dirty looks in hipster areas just because of my outfit.

Yeah some were very snobby when you are not a hippy.I hanged out with few of them because it was easy to get laid.Especially those naive cuties with nice natural boobs. Yes I love other women. It was fun those times.I use make sure we get shower first.
11:07 AM on 02/15/2012
Not sure why you would be kissing their boobs, but to each his/her own.

I love other women and it was easy to get laid in their loud, never ending and smoke infested parties.
