By Chris Meyers

OKUMA, Japan, Feb 13 (Reuters) - Back home for just three hours, a tearful Miyoko Takeda sorted through her belongings. She left behind the kimonos she once wore as a traditional dancer, fearful they might be contaminated by radiation.

Nearly a year has passed since a massive 9.0 magnitude earthquake hit Japan, Okuma town, but the site of the reactors at the centre of the Fukushima nuclear crisis remains off limits for residents, save for short trips to hastily abandoned homes.

The Fukushima Daiichi plant, on the coast 240 km (150 miles) northeast of Tokyo, was wrecked by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, triggering reactor meltdowns and radiation leaks that caused mass evacuations and widespread contamination.

For the about 11,000 residents of Okuma, and the nearly 80,000 people across the prefecture who have been unable to return to their homes due to high radiation, the mental scars run deep even though many of their homes are physically intact.

Many do not know when, if ever, they can return to land that has been in their families for generations.

The 74-year-old Takeda, who visited her home with her husband at the weekend to remove cabinets, said that she has been unable to properly function ever since the evacuation last March.

"I can't sleep, I can't eat, I lost 8 kilogrammes and when I went to the doctor I threw up everything I took," she said, walking through her house, less than 10 km from the plant, in a white protective suit.

On her third trip back, Takeda fought back tears as she tried on her kimonos one last time before the three-hour window to return ended and they were once again forced out of the 20-km exclusion zone in which their home lies .

Okuma is the location of four reactors at the centre of the nuclear crisis, out of the crippled plant's total six reactors .

Over a thousand people from three towns, all within the exclusion zone, went back on Sunday to an area where weeds have taken over kindergarten schoolyards and manure from roaming cattle covers the roads.

QUILTS SPREAD OUT

In some cases, families left in such haste that their futon sleeping quilts were still spread out on the floor.

While some people, like Takeda, used their precious few hours to pick up belongings, others visited family graves and repaired the damage caused by the quake and its aftershocks.

With headstones overturned and weeds encroaching on ancient graves, 59-year-old Minoru Fukuo and his wife tidied up the area even though its only visitors now are passing wild animals.

"We just prayed that we want to come back soon, and clean up the grave properly. So we asked them (our ancestors) to wait until then," Fukuo said.

This is only the third time that residents have been allowed back into the nuclear exclusion zone since the disaster, and the first time that they have been allowed to visit graves.

Since the quake hit, the residents of Okuma have scattered across the country.

With no clear future, some are losing hope.

"If it's a normal disaster you recover from it, and you go forward a bit every day. But this time you don't," said Tomiko Ikinobu, 47. "All that's left is uncertainty."

The Japanese government declared the Daiichi nuclear plant to be in a state of "cold shutdown" late last year but the Environment Ministry has said about 2,400 square km (930 square miles) of land around the plant may need to be decontaminated -- an area roughly the size of Luxembourg.

Ikinobu, who lives with her four children in temporary housing, has been without a job since the disaster.

"Once a year goes by, everything has a year added to it, so getting a new job gets harder. My kids are getting bigger as well." (Editing by Elaine Lies and Jonathan Thatcher)

Nuclear radiation and water pollution – theme for February 2012
http://nuclear-news.net/
snip
What you are not supposed to know:It doesn’t take an accident for a nuclear power plant to release radioactivity into our air, water and soil. All it takes is the plant’s everyday routine operation, and federal regulations permit these radioactive releases…

.Government regulations allow radioactive water to be released to the environment containing “permissible” levels of contamination. Permissible does not mean safe.Detectors at reactors are set to allow contaminated water to be released, unfiltered, if below “permissible” legal levels.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission relies upon self-reporting and computer modeling from reactor operators to track radioactive releases and their projected dispersion. A significant portion of the environmental monitoring data is extrapolated – virtual, not real.Accurate accounting of all radioactive wastes released to the air, water and soil from the entire reactor fuel production system is simply not available. http://www.nirs.org/factsheets/routineradioactivereleases.htm

Review:

1. An Engineering point of view, one can see that TEPCO is
... with holding vital info that is delaying any containment
... (no pun intended) and now their Gov't. is helping them!

2. A Scientific point of view, TEPCO is in total denial about
... the seriousness of this nuclear debacle and its effect on
... on the Japanese people and their economy! They are
... treating this more like a big "RECALL" instead of a CRISIS!

3. A Global point of view, Japan is not only NOW the World's
... Greatest Polluter, but they have lost their good quality
... reputation and they are allowing the pollution to continue!

4. A Humanitarian point of view, their treatment of their own
... children's health, their workers health and their refusal to
... make public, radiation readings from 3/11 is inexcusable!

5. A MSM (Main Stream Media) point of view, the way that our
... Countries have hidden this from the Public is just criminal
... and should be a wake up call to all to of us that we are losing
... our freedom of the Press along with our Freedom of Speech.

The only thing hard to understand is, why has the UN
... and All Other Nations allowed this "Japanese Fire Drill"
... to Continue, unless we are all potentially doomed
... and they do not want Global Panic?

1. False. From an engineering point of view, once can see that a source techncial document has to go through a mountain of peer review and approval before being released. Because the document is not released on the time table of salivating antinukes doesnt mena its being withheld. It just means the document has to be correct before making it public. Plus some parts cant be public for security reasons. You just dont want eco-terrorists storming the gats.

2. Incorrect. Science outside of TEPCO has weighed in and said that the doses are benign.

3. Incorrect. Pollution is not one atom over the ocean.

4. Incorrect. Parents are the ultimate protectors of their children. Parents receive guidance and they can either follow it or not.

5. Incorrect, there is nothing to report.

The only thing to understand is that you want to perpetuate fear by proliferating falsehoods that are discredited by mainstream radiation professionals (e.g., 14k Mangano)

Your tretise is a perfect example of how someone with improper credentials, no training or experience can lump this into a general conspiracy theme.

The sad part is that some people who are vulnerable to this type of persuasion can actually do more harm than good.

Everyone is an expert, thus there is no expert.

HAPPY VALENTINES DAY N☢T:
Radiation spikes throughout Greater Tokyo Area on Feb. 14 — One of highest seen in months (Gov’t Data)
http://enenews.com/?p=26552

As I predicted before, the relationship between EQ's and radiation spikes should be well known to all by now:

Think about it, any shaking or Earth movement will cause the 3 “missing corium(s) to restart what I call “The Fuky Effect” and I expect to see increased signs of radiation in Northern Japan as well as additional temperature spikes “in temperature gauges that are not reading properly” at Fukushima!

These EQ will not help the rumbling Volcano in Southern Japan either…

As for foods that may be imported from Japan, there are three safety nets in place so you can feel safe eating what you buy at the grocery store. The first safety net is the ban on importing food from within Japan’s evacuation zone (within about 20 kilometers of the nuclear reactors), the second safety net is Japan’s monitoring of other foods prior to leaving Japan, and the third safety net is the United States Department of Agriculture, which monitors and inspects our imported food.

How about the foodstuffs from Japan that are repackaged in another country as sold as manufactured and or packaged in that other country?

Lots of way to get around labeling when big bucks are at stake!

From Health Physics Society:
Fukushima Release of Radiation and Potential Health Effects

The emotional trauma of the devastating events in Japan is overwhelming. While the members of the Health Physics Society can only offer our condolences for those who have lost loved ones and our support for those still looking for loved ones, we can help put minds at ease regarding the radiation from the Japanese reactors that has been detected in the United States.
Radioactivity has been detected in nearly every state, whether it be in rain water, in the air, or in milk. We understand that the fear that arises from hearing about radioactivity being found nearby can cause increased stress and, sometimes, an overwhelming sense of loss of control. This is why it is important for you to know that the amount of radioactivity being detected in the United States is of no concern; we can drink the milk, eat food out of our gardens, and drink water from our faucets.

We will also continue to follow results from the 124-radionuclide sampling stations throughout the country used by the Environmental Protection Agency (you can look at them at www.epa.gov/japan2011) and the monitoring network by the 104 operating nuclear power facilities (monitoring air, water, milk, and foods) to be able to provide you with up-to-date information.

The US RADNET was "in repair" after 3/11 and the US has failed it's mission to provide measurements to the public posting instead everything is "under" safe limits!

Stress causes more health problem than benign levels of radiation.

Heck you can get cancer from your cell phone more than benign levels of radiation.

Your brain does cook when EM is nearby. Its not the cancer cluster caused by the power plant, but the EM from the HV lines.

Nuclear Safety Commission chief Haruki Madarame apologized Wednesday for mistakes and safety shortcomings that surfaced during the triple-meltdown crisis at the Fukushima No. 1 power plant and blamed them on bureaucrats and utilities that failed to heed calls for better disaster preparedness.

Madarame was summoned to the Diet to give unsworn testimony before a special committee investigating the causes of the disaster at the Tokyo Electric Power Co. plant.

They get all sorts of diseases that the apologists can blame on other effects than radiation. May the nuclear apologists spawn become exactly like Belarus's high school students. No. It means YOUR chance. Not some people. Its individual risk.

If a million people eat one banana a day, how many die?

If 10 million fly or sleep with other people (getting radiation) how many will die?

Youre reasoning is pathetic.

There is no such thing as "collective dose." Either a person gets a dose or doesn't. If you the one who gets a dose, you die. What do you care about the percentages, the "stochastic" probabililties? You are beyond caring. "Collectivities" are a chimaera. Everyone dies one at a time.

There is no such thing as "collective dose" to a population. The stochastic is a chance effect not a certainty. 0.1 Sv increases an indivduals chance over regular 0.5%. 0.1 Sv doesnt lead to 50,000 deaths in a million population. Thats poppycock.

More Bad news for the Pro Nukers:
Study warns of another nuclear disaster at Fukushima Daiichi — Likely to be directly disturbed by large quakes (Full Paper)
snip
Seismic risk at the Fukushima nuclear plant increased after the magnitude 9 earthquake that hit Japan last March, scientists report. The new study, which uses data from over 6,000 earthquakes, shows the 11 March tremor caused a seismic fault close to the nuclear plant to reactivate. The results are now published in Solid Earth, an open-access journal of the European Geosciences Union (EGU).

The research suggests authorities should strengthen the security of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant to withstand large earthquakes that are likely to directly disturb the region. The power plant witnessed one of the worst nuclear disasters in history after it was damaged by the 11 March 2011 magnitude 9 earthquake and tsunami. But this tremor occurred about 160 km from the site, and a much closer one could occur in the future at Fukushima.
