Paul Ryan, Jeff Sessions Warn Obama's Budget Could Spur Greek-Style Debt Crisis

Paul Ryan Obama Budget

First Posted: 02/13/2012 2:44 pm Updated: 02/13/2012 2:52 pm

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama's $3.8 trillion budget plan does nothing to address mounting debt and could lead the country into a European-style crisis, key congressional Republicans said Monday.

"Again, the president has ducked responsibility. He has failed to take any credible action" to address the debt crisis, House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) said on a conference call. "All we're getting here is more spending, more borrowing and more debt that will lead to slower economic growth. This is not a fiscal plan to save America from a debt crisis. It's a political plan for the president's reelection."

Obama's budget proposal, released Monday morning, maps out $4 trillion in deficit reduction but spends trillions of dollars on Democrats' priority areas, namely education, infrastructure and transportation. At least $1.5 trillion in deficit reduction would come through raising taxes on the wealthy and removing certain corporate tax breaks.

Senate Budget Committee ranking member Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.), also on the press call, said Obama's budget is "exceedingly deceptive" because it actually creates $11 trillion in new debt. Obama is relying on "budget gimmicks" to claim $4 trillion in deficit reduction, he said, when the reality is his plan would only achieve $273 billion in deficit reduction over 10 years.

"Next year, the United States could be like Greece," Sessions continued, referring to the severe debt crisis faced by that country as a result of uncontrolled government spending.

Ryan similarly warns on the House Budget Committee website: "The President's budget ignores the drivers of our debt, bringing America perilously close to a European-style crisis."

The reality is Obama's budget will not pass Congress and was not ever really intended to do so. It serves more as an outline of Democratic Party priorities and convenient talking points in the lead-up to the November elections. It also gives congressional Republicans something specific to point to, and trash, as they push their own policies ahead of the elections.

Republicans are already criticizing Obama for using what they consider to be accounting tricks to conceal how much money he is really spending. They object to his plan to repeal $1.2 trillion in Budget Control Act cuts without counting that as new spending; his proposal to stop planned cuts to Medicare doctors without identifying how he will offset the costs; and his taking of credit for discretionary caps that are already law. Republicans are also ripping Obama for saying he is saving nearly $1 trillion over the next decade from winding down the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Counting that money as "savings" is a gimmick, they say, because those funds would never have been spent.

"All of that is borrowed," Sessions said. "It's not as if there's extra money in a pot; you just have to keep borrowing. Is it acceptable for the president of the United States to mislead the American people as he's now done again?"

What will bring a Greek-style debt crisis is Republican austerity measures and not the Obama budget. Obama has the right plan to expand the economy to get us out of debt the way we did to escape from our debt burden after WW11.  Republicans, on the other hand, think the only way to resolve debt is to shrink the government.  Given these austerity measures, we will just have lower or negative GDP  Read More...

An economy like Greece would be enviable when compared to Ryan's plan for America.

Ryan should be an expert on Greece's problems. His budget is virtually a shopping list of everything that went wrong in Greece to bring them to the edge of default.

I wonder if the repubs are going to put money in the budget for unwanted children since they wish to outlaw contraception. Might as well go all the way and pay for their college too.

Obama's last budget was voted down in the Democrat-controlled Senate by a vote of 97 - 0.

Now, he's back for more trillion dollar deficits, more spending, no non-military cuts, and more proof that he's a liar.

Two questions . . . 1) Is Obama trying to tank the US on purpose, or is he just too stupid to know any better? and 2) Who is best to get us out of this Obama mess?

resident Barack Obama wasn't kidding when he said he was planning to "fundamentally change America." Not even a little.

First of all, we have "Operation Overwhelm." It's mind-boggling how much news and information there is to cover right now. But that's exactly what they want. There's too much to pay attention to, by design.

One day Obama Dictates private companies and religious organizations are herby by his order going to pay for someone else's birth control, sterilization and condoms. Next day He claims his massive debt building "Budget" will save $4 Trillion while in fact it builds up another $11 Trillion in new debt. Next Day makes wild claims Republicans want to take away womans birth control.

A real examination of the WHs record, the economy, Federal mandates being passed to to city, county, state and Private business and the Regulatory bureaucracy that must regulate and monitor and administer over these entities becomes more and more harsh for non-compliance with orders from on high. Even if those orders are not accompanied with funding that must be paid by local taxpayers first before any local projects can be funded.

Each of these issues are not followed up and when attempted the WH press Secretary Jay Carney simply tells the Press "we are done talking about that" and changes the subject.

We had no idea someone on this site had an inside glimpse into the budget......11 Trillion huh?
Regarding Republicans want take away woman's birth control...... Look up the Personhood legislation..... that's exactly what it does and all the GOP candidates agree with the men behind that legislation.

When it comes to budgets, honesty about the hard facts and integrity, I pretty much trust Paul Ryan. We all know that Obama’s statement about cutting the deficit in half is BS and anyone who is still naĂ¯ve enough to believe he wants to bring balance to this nation is to be pitied. Of course he is going to play with the numbers to make it look better than it is. I do have to wonder how much of what the president is doing is designed with the failure of the US in mind.

Of course, it’s likely this budget will fail in the Senate 97-0, too.

I really can't believe that you and a lot of Republicans really and truly believe that President Obama ran with the intention of destroying America and his plan from the beginning was to ruin the economy and make the US a third world country. I guess when you start with that image of the man it's easy to hate him. I wonder what George Bush's plan for America was? He inherited a surplus and a decent economy and under him we got bombed on 9/11, had our economy fail to the point of meltdown, loss of over 4 million jobs, two wars (unfunded), two tax cuts (unfunded), Medicare part D (unfunded), deregulation that led directly to the financial crisis, rendition, Gitmo, and a disastrous foreign policy. As far as his budget passing Congress, with Republicans obstructing every measure he puts forth, not passing or even acting on his budget is just par for the course. Like the Jobs bill that Republicans have fought against since September, no jobs equal bad economy. That's the GOP plan for winning the White House in November.

I merely said I have to wonder. And, if Bush were running for president he wouldn't get my vote either, unless it was against Obama. Then, maybe. Even the fact that Obama has continued a lot of Bush policies wouldn't cut it for me.

His budget failed in a 97-0 vote last time. I don't see how you can blame that on the Republicans. And, the jobs bill was Stimulus 2; since 1 didn't work either I figure the Senate was wise to vote that down as well. Some of them want to keep their jobs...
05:05 PM on 02/14/2012
LoL. If Obama's intention actually was to ruin the US economy he was way too late. George Walker Bush beat him by at least four years.

We should all listen to the guys who did this to our country....

"AP-2001) President Bush said Saturday that the most important number in the budget he sends to Congress next week is the $5.6 trillion surplus it projects over the next 10 years.

That huge projected surplus provides the underpinning of all the administration's tax-cut and spending plans, Mr. Bush said in his recorded weekly radio address.

"A surplus in tax revenue, after all, means that taxpayers have been overcharged," the president said. "And usually when you've been overcharged, you expect to get something back." The surplus figure "counts more than any other" in the budget, he said.

Democrats cautioned that surpluses projected over so long a period can turn into elusive fool's gold. And they continued to insist that as it stands the Bush tax-cut plan unfairly favors the wealthy over those of more modest means."

AND THIS:

http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2011/07/the-chart-that-should-accompany-all-discussions-of-the-debt-ceiling/242484/

And have this economic record over 100 years:

http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2008/10/14/opinion/20081014_OPCHART.html

And of course RYAN in 2003 when pushing for more Bush tax cuts, said the problem was our deficits were not high enough.

The major difference between U.S. debt and Greek debt is that our debt is payable in U.S.Dollars, the world's reserve currency. The FED can monetize the debt through inflation, which is exactly what they're doing and have done in the past. Politicians have come to believe that they can kick the can down the road forever like the republicans who told us "Reagan proved that deficits don't matter" and democrats like Obama who continue to embrace the idea. The cost is the inflation tax that devalues the labor of the working class and the assets of the retired. If the economy grows either through real economic activity, government spending, or another FED created bubble, it's likely the great unwashed won't notice much in the short term. We are in uncharted territory and the real managers of the worldwide economy are scrambling to avoid a collapse. But they've run out of magic bullets. All of the republicrat smoke and mirrors is mostly irrelevant. Neither party has the will or the tools to fix the problem. Both are relying on the invisible hand. The only question is which one will take the credit or get the blame.
