Angelina Jolie's 'In The Land Of Blood And Honey': Star Hopes Film Draws Attention To Syria

Angelina Jolie

AIDA CERKEZ   02/14/12 04:26 PM ET  AP

SARAJEVO, Bosnia-Herzegovina — Angelina Jolie on Tuesday premiered her film "In the Land of Blood and Honey" in Bosnia, where the fictional tale of a romance between a Bosnian Serb man and a Bosnian Muslim woman has shone a spotlight on the ethnic anger still left over from the country's brutal conflict.

Jolie, who arrived in Sarajevo with partner Brad Pitt to attend the screening, greeted the crowd of 5,000 in Bosnian, before acknowledging in English that it would bring back painful memories of the bloody 1992-95 war. As the film ended to a standing ovation, Jolie tearfully said, "To share this with you means the world to me."

At an earlier press conference, Jolie said the movie was "heavy" but that she was happy with it because it shows what horrors can occur in the absence of a timely intervention.

She said she hoped the film could serve as a "wake-up call" for the international community to pay more attention to atrocities and act to prevent them – including in Syria.

"I am satisfied with what we made, I feel very strongly about it and I believe that its core issue – which is the need for intervention and need for the world to care about atrocities when they are happening – is very, very timely and especially with things that are happening in Syria today," she said.

The film, which has already been released in the U.S. follows what happens when the man becomes an army officer and the woman is held in a military prison camp where rape occurs. Some Serbs have accused the film of demonizing them.

"I think it is very important that this film is out at this time and ... if this film points the finger at anybody it is the international community," she said.

The distributor in the Serb part of Bosnia said he won't show it there because it portrays Serbs as the villains and they wouldn't put up with that.

"There is simply no interest for this movie here, so I can't sell any tickets," Vladimir Ljevar told The Associated Press. "The fact that the Serbs are the bad guys in it is the reason why there is no interest. The film is lousy. I watched it. It has had bad reviews. It is unprofitable."

But Jolie rejected the claim that her film was anti-Serb.

"I understand that it's sensitive," she said. "But I also know that the Serbian people are intelligent and open-minded people. They will know the difference between what's been forced upon them and what they feel in their own hearts."

She said that "although it's difficult, I hope that they see intention behind it."

Jolie noted she worked on the plot with people from both sides of the conflict.

"We were trying to find humanity on all sides and yet we were addressing the horrors of something that we felt we must show in a horrific way," Jolie said. "That is not an easy balance to find in such a sensitive subject matter, so we did our best; that was very hard, the politics of this region are very complicated."

Thousands of women were raped during Bosnia's war, which also included the notorious Srebrenica massacre in July 1995 and the 44-month siege of the capital, Sarajevo. Most of the rape victims were Muslim Bosniak women, often the target of mass rape used as a weapon of terror.

Many of the victims were raped repeatedly. Some were brought back to their homes and dumped in front of their husbands. Other women were violated in their husbands' presence as part of a shock campaign.

Defying the unofficial censorship in the Serb part of the country, Ana Vidovic, a Bosnian Serb woman from Prijedor organized a private screening in her home Saturday after she got approval from Jolie.

She told local media she was annoyed by claims there is no interest in the movie among Bosnian Serbs. "I am the public and as far as I remember, nobody asked me," she said.

Jolie said Vidovic's gesture meant very much to her team, so she wrote her a letter and approved the screening.

"We will do that for anyone who wants to have a private screening. And we hope that we encourage the people to see it somehow," Jolie said.

A group of Muslim Bosniaks who now have returned to their homes in the Serb part of the country say they are interested in seeing Jolie's movie and plan to organize private screenings.

Jolie said she made this film because "I just felt that this subject was important and I was really moved by it."

She said she may direct again.

"If I can find something that means as much to me, I will try, but if this is the only thing I ever directed, I would be very happy."

It seems to me that for Serbians, this is a chance to apologize and try to repair the damages done during the War. I'm part, German and Russian. Both parties were responsible for some of the most horrendous crimes against each other. Often, women who played no part in those wars were the ones who were abused. Not merely because of their nationality, either. Did these rapists run background checks to even make sure it was real Germans or Russians they were abusing? No, they attacked those who often are the weakest and unable to defend themselves. Not even thinking that rape can lead to pregnancy. For a man, to treat fatherhood so cheaply, does him no honor at all.

Anger, over atrociousness, is very understandable but using rape as a means to an end, is weak and only shows how inhumane the other side really is. There are no excuses for war crimes. That is why they are illegal to begin with. To try to justify them does not bring you honor. Only shame. Using war as a means to behave as a sub-human, is wrong and no excuse in the world will work to justify it.

In the Bosnian war between 3 nations ( Bosnian Muslims, Bosnian Serbs and Bosnian Croats) there were victims on three sides. And yes, most of them were Bosnian Muslims, about 40% which is slightly more than Serbians' 30%, so tell me why should Serbs apologise? It looks like Muslims always keep their mouth shut as if they were angels picking up flowers during the war...

Another thing, I'm not against Serbs, just the one who killed my Dad.
There is no such thing as Bosnian Muslims, Bosnian Serbs, Bosnian Croats, only Muslims, Orthodox, Christians who live in Bosnia and Herzegowina or with one word Bosnians. If they were Serbs or Croats they would live in the same named countries. That is the problem of Bosnia & Herzegowina nowdays, people like you and politicians telling us that we are not united, and that 3 different religions can't live "under one roof".
But then again it is easier to blaim Muslims for the whole situation. Isn't it?
The problem is how little people know about Islam in Bosnia, and always think we are Arabs. We are not, and we are not Muslim extremist!!!

It seems like many are set against the movie even in America. I suspect it may have something to with Muslims being the victims of genocide in this instance.

Catherine-
So showing a movie about the Holocaust in Germany would be inappropriate then?

Soooo, Hollywood actress is teaching people of former Yugoslavia what went on on their own land.
Now she's speaking about Syria. What kind of world do we live in where we want actros to teach us, as opposed to scholars and those who experience wars firsthand. She is not qualified to do so. A few days of photo-ops doesn't make anyone an expert on politics.

No it doesn't. She has exhaustively explained how she came about the script and the making of this movie. Maybe you should read more before you make such comments? There is a lot written about it and she is one of the few Hollywood players who actually can claim that she is qualified to make such a movie. She has interviewed victims from many different Countries. She made this film with the people who were involved in this war. That is more than most filmmakers are willing to to invest their time in. And to expect all movie makers to be researchers and experts isn't reasonable. You can only wear so many hats and do it well.

Good for her for using the opportunity to speak out about the conflict in Syria. I wish people would focus more on the problems that she's highlighting and not her personal life.
09:29 AM on 02/15/2012
From the perspective of someone who survived war in Bosnia, it's a shallow story. And it caused such revolt and dispute here. She made damage instead of helping to establish peace here.

you sound so immature. Does it really sound like she is promoting herself here? Maybe you should all go back to school. She is bringing awareness to other parts of the world where it is really needed. Last I looked, we can easily walk outside our homes to go to the grocery store while these people in Syria will likely be shot by either the government or the resistance groups or crossfire.

Oh boy, you don't think Angelina is promoting herself? I have some beachfront property in Oklahoma I would like to sell you.

Also, the poster is from the former Yugoslavia and lived through the events Jolie is describing in the Land of Blood and Honey. His comment basically says that her movie doesn't accurately portray the war and has done more harm than good in his country. Who are you to say he's wrong? Did you live in Yugoslavia in the 1990's and live through these events? What makes you more of an expert on the Yugoslav war?

Nothing he said was immature.

Sometimes Angelina Jolie looks so beautiful, she just takes your breath even in photographs, but there are other times when she looks like she could kill you in an instant with those flaring nostrils and that basilisk glare.

not as beautiful as she once was. she is not agong well. that could be because she is so painfully thin. too bad about the graffitti all over her............looks awful..........

OH give me a break! Angelina Jolie is washed up. She looks older than her years because she's trying to set some type of record with all of these kids. And look at her. She was a druggie and total rebel when she was younger, she stole another woman's husband, and she thinks she is all that and more. She is very arrogant and she's a total ego maniac, and the truth is, she looks like a midde-aged woman now, and her movies all stink. Worry about helping people in your own country for once too. Wouldn't that be something different.

I am touched by the wisdom Angie applies when giving thoughtful answers to questions about her movie and her feelings on things that are important to her. She inspires me to care more... She shows me that there's a big world out there and my miniscule problems are hick-ups to people that are truly in need and living in war torn countries. ;

She is a true woman of the world. I wonder how Aniston would do around common folks in war torn countries. Doubt she'd let her hair get dirty. Oh by the way, happy V-day to the logic woman and her little one.

I honestly can't imagine how she has any *me* time in her life but (yes, with nannies) she seems to balance her life very well.
Happy Valentines Day to you, My dear Okey. The little one will be six tomorrow. She's having a fun week with Valentines day today, her birthday tomorrow and counting down to her big b-day bash on Saturday. Never a dull moment. ;)

Are you kidding. Do you look closely at Angelina. She has the top designer fashions on everyday, and she's a total Diva. She does all of this supposed good acts of kindness because she wants media attention. Which is understandable because she doesn't have much talent. Her movies are all flops. She and Brad and the kids live in veritable mansions all over the world, and she has a harem of nannies who do everything for her and her children. And you're saying what about Aniston? You don't actually think all of this stuff with Jolie is true. She acts like a pompous arrogant diva everytime I see her on TV. And she's washed up now too. Not even pretty.

One doesn't need to have fat (the opposite of thin) to be healthy.
04:59 PM on 02/14/2012
It's not even about healthy. She just doesn't look good. Being too thin as you age makes everyone look at least 10 years older, and she certainly does. I would guess her as a woman in her mid to late 40's not mid 30's. When I was her age, I looked like a young girl. She looks way too old for her age. You don't have to be heavy, but a normal weight is always healthier and more attractive. Doctors will tell you that too.

And who cares? they have their own government and problems to work out as we do here. There are very severe domestic problems right here at home in the USA that need to be addressed. We just can't solve every problem in the whole planet. If she wants to support this "cause" then she should move over there and work there relentlessly in lieu of making movies.. or write a book about it.. if she has the brain power to do that. We are losing our young service men daily fighting a war in Arabia, etc. that cannot be solved and is frankly, none of our business.
