Edible Balloon: Alinea Serves Floating, Helium-Filled, Green-Apple-Flavored Delight

First Posted: 02/14/2012 3:49 pm Updated: 02/14/2012 3:59 pm

Recently, Grant Achatz has been getting so much press for his restaurant Next, his bar The Aviary and his successful memoir Life on the Line that it's almost easy to forget that he's the chef at Alinea, Chicago's only three-Michelin-starred restaurant. But on Sunday, Alinea released a video that puts Achatz's remarkable inventiveness front and center. It showcases a new dessert that's literally lighter than air: an edible balloon filled with real helium and tasting of green apple.

Watch the video below:

There's something incredibly end-of-empire about this.
Helium is an extremely limited resource.

The world is running out of helium:

Maybe eating it isn't such a super idea (although probably fun!)?

This only something that someone with waaaaay too much time on their hands would conceive of. While the helium is not going to kill you, it certainly isn't something that you would want to deliberately put in to your body. This is bizarre to say the least.

If I inhale enough helium, I can finally fulfill my dreams of flying (floating)!
