Kate Middleton Charity Visit: The Duchess Spends Valentine's Day Solo! (PHOTOS)

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 02/14/2012 7:17 am Updated: 02/14/2012 10:51 am

Spending Valentine's Day solo has got to be a bummer for a bona fide princess, right?

But even with Prince Williams away on a six-week deployment in the Falkland Islands with the Royal Air Force, the Duchess of Cambridge didn't waste time sulking inside while eating bon-bons (which is maybe what we would've done). Instead, Kate focused on doing good on her first royal Valentine's Day, visiting numerous charities around Liverpool on Tuesday.

The Duchess visited The Brink, an alcohol-free bar for recovering addicts, which christened a smoothie 'The Duchess' in her honor. She's also making an appearance at Alder Hey children's hospital, where she'll be spending time with cancer patients.

Kate bundled up in a sleek brown coat (costing 329-pounds) from Hobbs, black tights and what appears to be the same black pumps she wore last week to visit the Royal Portrait Gallery. Her accessories? A black clutch and her famous sapphire and diamond engagement ring.

And Kate apparently didn't go home empty-handed on her romantic day: a fan brought her a special Valentine's Day cupcake.

Check out Kate making only her second official solo appearance below!

She'll never have a day alone again for the rest of her life now that she has married into the royal web.

The Duchess looks more and more beautiful (if ever possible) with every additional charitable act of hers, like her famous mother-in-law.

Really? Although I read up on her once in a while ... why is this some sob story? How many people have had husbands in the military who missed their first anniversary? ... the birth of their first child? ... the birth of any child? ... anniversaries & birthdays? When you marry into any royal position the chances are strong that you will not be able to live the fairy tale life and experience every memorable event throughout the year together. But than a lot of other people don't experience it as well.

There's wasn't enough time in her day to apply that heavy eyeliner and blush and call you, too.

Seriously, folks. Her husband is working. That is exactly what happens when you are a grownup. You have to make concessions for each other. Too many people get the idea that their husbands/wives exist to serve their needs. Early this morning I woke up very ill with norovirus. Instead of my husband complaining that I had ruined his plans for Valentine's Day, he held my hair while I vomited, covered me with 6 blankets because I couldn't get warm, and took care of the dogs. He took off work, which tells me I was truly pathetic, and stayed nearby all day long. This evening when we finally exchanged cards and gifts, I joked with him a bit, "Is this what you pictured when we decided to get married?" His reply, "I wouldn't exchange it for anything. Now go to sleep."

Love does not always need grand gestures. It means we sometimes have to do things we might not want to do, like be alone or take time out of our schedules. That's what real love is.
