Penn State Spent $3.2 Million In Fallout From Sandusky Scandal In 2011

Penn State Racks Up $3M Tab On Sandusky Scandal

The Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal cost Pennsylvania State University big--$3.2 million to be exact.

Penn State spent just over $3 million dollars by the end of 2011 in legal services, crisis communications, and consulting and public relations fees as a result of the scandal around Sandusky, the former assistant football coach.

Almost $1.5 million of those dollars went toward an internal investigation by former FBI director Louis Freeh. Another $283,000 was spent on a news conference and public relations for Freeh.

Nearly half a million dollars was spent on crisis management for the board, and $570,000 went towards legal defense for the University and employees.

The large tab as a result of the scandal will be paid for with interest earned on a repaid loan, as well as a small portion--$400,000--to be covered by insurance. Penn State insists the money will not come from tuition, taxpayer dollars or alumni donations.

Penn State's tab for covering the scandal was made available on an "Openness" website set up by the University.

No details have been posted on what the school has spent so far in 2012, but university spokesman Bill Mahon told the Philadelphia Inquirer "It's a work in progress. The site will expand over time to include additional information."

The Patriot-News reports ousted university president Graham Spanier "began a one-year professional development and post-presidency transition period" but his salary is confidential.
