Report: Russia Nuclear Disaster Narrowly Averted In Submarine Fire

Russia Submarine Nuclear Disaster

MOSCOW, Feb 14 (Reuters) - Russia came close to nuclear disaster in late December when a blaze engulfed a nuclear-powered submarine carrying atomic weapons, a leading Russian magazine reported, contradicting official assurances that it was not armed.

Russian officials said at the time that all nuclear weapons aboard the Yekaterinburg nuclear submarine had been unloaded well before a fire engulfed the 167-metre (550 feet) vessel and there had been no risk of a radiation leak.

But the respected Vlast weekly magazine quoted several sources in the Russian navy as saying that throughout the fire on Dec. 29 the submarine was carrying 16 R-29 intercontinental ballistic missiles, each armed with four nuclear warheads.

"Russia, for a day, was on the brink of the biggest catastrophe since the time of Chernobyl," Vlast reported. The 1986 disaster in modern-day Ukraine is regarded as the world's worst nuclear accident.

Neither the Russian Defence Ministry nor the office of Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin, who has responsibility for military matters, would immediately comment on the report. A spokesman for the navy could not be contacted.

SPARKS FLY

The fire started when welding sparks ignited wooden scaffolding around the 18,200-tonne submarine at the Roslyakovo docks, 1,500 km (900 miles) north of Moscow and one of the main shipyards used by Russia's northern fleet.

The rubber covering of the submarine then caught fire, sending flames and black smoke 10 metres (30 feet) above the stricken vessel. Firemen battled the blaze for a day and a night before partially sinking the submarine to douse the flames, according to media reports.

Vlast reported that immediately after the fire the Yekaterinburg sailed to the navy's weapons store, an unusual trip for a damaged submarine supposedly carrying no weapons and casting doubt on assurances that it was not armed.

"K-84 was in dock with rockets and torpedoes on board," the magazine said, adding that apart from the nuclear weapons the submarine was carrying torpedoes and mines as well as its two nuclear reactors.

The magazine said that if one of the torpedoes had exploded it could have threatened the nuclear missiles, leading to an extremely dangerous nuclear accident.

Media reports of what happened at the time of the fire were contradictory and foreign journalists were unable to gain access to the high security zone.

Russia's worst post-Soviet submarine disaster was in August 2000 when the nuclear submarine Kursk sank in the Barents Sea killing all 118 crewmen aboard. (Editing by Ben Harding)

We are now involved in two Extinction level events. The first is the gulf stream which no longer conveys warmth to europe and threatens a mini ice age.The second ELE is Fukeshima. The whole world including the atmosphere and ocean all over the world is threatened with deadly plutonium poisoning. Finally Israel and the USA are rushing to the final war with Iran Russia and China.....

God these Russians are friggin scary. Chernobyl, the K-19 nuclear sub, one space disaster after another...Russian engineers are great at designing huge rugged machines, buy they totally lack the finesse to design safe controls for nuclear devices.

It is the safety of the people and what should be done rather than what is being done and the need for the government to continue to be less democratic and to bossy where the people say so what it is still another job and not put more perfection in there work and less for education where as just push them into the job and not screen properly in all aspects all the way up cause they don't have to worry about it as much or worry to much cause of the wrong kind of pressure tactics rather than education and communication the gap between people and government which this country is doing cause of the computer gap

The imbecilic AOL headline said nuclear "Armageddon" was narrowly averted. What? A sub fire was not going to launch those nukes, nor detonate them. It may have possibly set off the propellant in the missiles, exploding them and scattering warheads and radioactive material around the base, but Armageddon?
11:30 AM on 02/16/2012
lol, it WAS a pretty sensational headline. i kept thinking, how could a submarine burn? i guess if it got hot enough, the torpedoes may have exploded, or the reactor could have been damaged and leaked. but, beyond that?? naaaah

The real concern would have been if the fire reached in the hull, and was able to breach the reactor compartment. The reactor would be off of course, but the Russians are pretty lax with their nuclear standards.

The advent of "The Great Society" of National Socialism in the USA of the 1960's, was the catalyst for the Hope and Change we see in the USA of today. The Drugs and total dependency addiction of a 'nanny state', is only superseded by the masters of National Socialism...the former USSR. If the battle against National Socialism is lost, one only need look at Russia, to see the USA future..

Trying to equate "National Socialism" with our system is incorrect. Many countries invaded by Germany during WWII have some sort of safety nets. They don't have these because they are copying "National Socialism." The fascists in Germany used the term "socialist" to try to co-opt the attractiveness of ideas of socialism already existing, and to pervert the meaning for their own propaganda purposes. North Korea calls itself The Democratic People's Republic of North Korea for similar propaganda purposes.

actually the chances of any of the nukes detonating at their full nuclear potential would be slim in order for a nuke to detonate as a nuclear weapon actually would recquire that the conventional shaped charges that would compress the plutonium core fire in a very synchronized fashion in order to compress the plutonium towards its centre accurately any varience to this firing would more likely scatter the plutonium before the actual chain reaction starts or at the very worst a lower yield nuke detonation of course there would be a huge nuclear spill with all the plutonium released evenif none of it detonates as a nuclear exlposive this would constitute a dirty weapon

In the US Navy it's called a missile fizzle when the rocket propellant ignites or explodes in the launch tube. In Russia's case that would have been about 25 tons of liquid propellant X 16 missiles underneath 64 nuclear warheads. Once one missile explodes the rest would most likely explode. That would make for one heck of a dirty bomb cocktail but absolutely no chance of nuclear detonation.

Russia is desparately trying to return to international respected status, using the the cold war behavior to prove they are strong. But their continuing failure technically over the last twenty years, particularly in military expecially naval security belies their stance. Putin wants control, and as past kgb head thinks he can force the embarassing from publicity.

The Russians should not be allowed to play with bombs...Does everyone remember that they lost HOW MANY nuclear bombs in the early 90's...We still were never told were they all went...GEE I WONDER>>
