Sean Penn Talks Falklands Dispute, Takes Argentina's Side

Sean Penn Falklands Dispute

02/13/12 02:55 PM ET  AP

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina -- Actor Sean Penn is taking Argentina's side in the Falkland Islands dispute.

Penn met with Argentine President Cristina Kirchner on Monday and then urged Britain to join U.N.-sponsored talks over what he called "the Malvinas Islands of Argentina."

Penn says "the world today is not going to tolerate any ludicrous and archaic commitment to colonialist ideology."

Britain has refused to negotiate as long as Falklanders want to remain part of the British realm, and is increasing its military defenses ahead of the 30th anniversary of Argentina's failed effort to seize the islands.

Penn says diplomacy is the only solution.

Ah, so England makes up only evil colonists. You're supporting a country that still hasn't fully come to terms with military dictatorship of the 80s.

Why do you do that Huffington Post? Ask people for comments and then not post them because it doesn`t fit in with your criteria...Try Freedom of Speech..Fascists...:0/

There you go..did it again...just what does one have to do to get a perfectly reasonable comment posted? Does it really depend on what side of the bed your moderators get out of in the morning ? Moderators should be impartial, and not decide what comments to post or not post depending on the size of their hangover

Sean Penn is a fail actor, I don't think anyone cares of his opinion in this dispute. i think people should remember when they criticise this matter, that this is between the united kingdom and Argentina, in the run up to the 30th anniversary to the Falklands war Argentina have been aggravating the UK. all we have simply done to keep the matter from escalating any more is simply take an old warship and replace it with a new and better warship and deploy a prince. if anything this is next to normal. Sean Penn should have no say in this. he is trying to get everyone on Argentina's side, so if anything does kick off then Argentina will get the sympathy vote. even though the UK have done nothing wrong. i think another important factor is that the people on the Falklands choose to be British citizens, then we are prepared to defend them.

As Argentina has a murder rate 4 times that of the UK, one of the worst corruption records in South America and one of the most restricted press systems, I'm not sure Sean Penn is being wise with this particular case of cosying up. I'd like to know how much Mr Penn actually knows about the Falkland Islands issue outside of what he's been told by Ms Fernandez otherwise we might think, you know, he's being a bit quick in his judgements. Oh, while he was there I wonder if he asked her about the property millions she's alleged to have made from the 30,000 people that went missing in the 1970's. Slip his mind, or just wasn't aware?

The US supported the military dictatorship in Argentina, and the British were helped by the dictatorship of Augosto Pinochet intelligence to help defeat Argentina's military (not to mention that the military dictatorship in Argentina was helped by the Israelis intelligence, and armed with Gaddafi). so both sides can't blame moral superiority.
06:39 PM on 02/15/2012
Your post if full of lies. For instance: murder rate is around 5 pero 100.000 (similar to US).
11:39 PM on 02/15/2012
You say my post is full of lies, then only point out one fact, the murder rate in England and Wales (we compile our rates together) is 1.24 per 100,000, the rate for Argentina is 5.5. Can you do basic maths, Nicolas? Don't accuse me of lying unless you're prepared to back up your arguments. Are you also going to argue against Transparency International ranking Argentina as being 100th in their list of corrupt states, with a score of 2.5 our of 10 (10 being not corrupt at all, 1 being totally corrupt). Do some research.
And "Epilef2000", we may have had help from Pinochet, but the Junta of Argentina was responsible for the murder of over 30,000 people, the so-called "disappeared", so it's very much the lesser of two evils. Additionally, what Pinochet did was not due to our actions, whereas Argentina's crimes were the result of herself, big difference.

Why would anyone want control of the Falklands? From what I understand, they're just barren strips of land, lacking any strategic value.
04:26 PM on 02/28/2012
You are wrong they have tremendous strategic value.

Possession of the Falklands not only permits development of the Falklands economic exploitation zone (Including two big oil fields and extensive fisheries) but also without them the UKs claim on Antarctica (a continent which will become economically important in the future) is greatly diminished.

goodness. the ignorance of this man is quite astonishing. the state of Argentina didn't even exist when Britain claimed the Falklands so Argentina has never had any claim to some islands which are 17 times further from Argentina than Calais is from Dover. on that basis and as I don't have national status yet I quite fancy claiming Hawaii and maybe Guam (I'm sure Barack and the respective populations of those islands won't mind). what a prize idiot Mr Penn is. Madonna was well rid.

And his position on the matter important how? Mr.Penn has neither moral authority, nor comprehension of the matter. Siding with the aggressor, IMNSHO, might be progressive in our times but it is more a demonstration of "useful idiotism" on part of Mr.Penn and all who supports him. People of the Falkland Islands want to be part of the United Kingdom and that is and should be the only opinion that really matters.

The people who live in Argentina aren't native - they too are colonists.

The people who live on the Faulklands - like being British.

Mr. Penn - they call that the right of self determination.
08:12 PM on 02/16/2012
Really? "The people who live in Argentina aren't native" and you know that because you been there when?

Also "The people who live on the Faulklands - like being British" might have something to do with the fact that their are FOB's

What do you mean by "FOB?"

Argentina is populated by people of European ancestry - they are not indigenous.
