San Diego Cops Find Nothing In 2-Hour Standoff With Empty Car (VIDEO)

First Posted: 02/15/2012 12:40 pm Updated: 02/15/2012 3:26 pm

A tense, two-hour standoff between armed San Diego Police and an empty car on the freeway ended with no injuries -- just questions.

The red-faced cops can be seen on Fox 5's helicopter footage pointing guns at a dark-colored sedan on Interstate 8 -- apparently for more than two hours before they moved in to take down their target.

But there was nobody in the vehicle.

Police officials said that the suspect they were looking for -- an unidentified man who was on parole -- was a suspect in a home invasion on Tuesday. He called his parole officer, saying that he'd broken down on the interstate and would be late for his mandatory meeting, the station reported.

Cops found the vehicle on the highway and surrounded it, thinking that their home invasion suspect was hiding inside. They even sent a canine to check the vehicle, but the pup found nothing.

The suspect, whose name police haven't yet released, is considered armed and dangerous.

I can only imagine what the owner of the car must have thought seeing his/her car on the freeway being victimized by San Diego's finest???? Duh!!!

Let's see... no movement. Order the driver to get out of the car. No driver gets out. Call in the dog. Dog says, "Nope, nothin' here." Let's bust up the back end of the car. No movement. Time to call in the bomb squad and have them blow it up to make sure. Idiots. The taxpayers will be thrilled to pay the bill for the damage done.

I don't know. It's better to be safe than sorry. Home invasions are a very serious crime. I can see how this can happen. I'm on the officers' side on this one.

you said "Home Invasion"... did you notice this is not a home, or a neighborhood, or a crime scene... this is an exercise in stupidity... and it goes to show what an out of control ego coupled to paranoia (fear of ghosts) can do... If if moves, or not, shoot it?

did he make his mandatory visit with his parole officer while all this was happening to his car
04:39 AM on 02/19/2012
So because he wasnt in his car, he must be armed and dangerous??

Think maybe he walked somewhere to get help, then saw his car on TV surrounded by the Cops, then ran away scared?
Cause if i turned on MY TV, and MY CAR was surrounded by cops with there guns drawn, I'd be on my way to france without worrying about what i did to warrant that.
Cops kill people.

This is why cops will always have my undying respect: someone has to bring parked cars to justice.

fauxnews lol, Just imagine if for some reason the car would have been running and it back-fired......the cops would have unloaded on the poor car....oh boy.

The police love to beat anything, black. This wouldn't of happened if the car was white.

"WATCH AND LAUGH: Cops In 2-Hour Standoff With Empty Car"

I'm not really laughing at ill use of our law enforcement time/money.

The officer explaining why the highway wasn't closed said the direction of crossfire wouldn't endanger passersby. Now the individual presumed to be in the car is an individual the officers presume is armed and dangerous. In addition to having no real control over events and their unforeseen consequences once shots are fired-- in close proximity to uninvolved passersby-- the officers have no control over that presumed individual's presumed actions, which, presumably, could be dangerous to passersby.
Which kind of fits in with the actions observed in the video.

Agreed, and in addition, Bullets can riccochet and cops can miss. Have these idiots never heard of Murphy's Law?

Those are some of the unforeseen consequences I was talking about. In addition, I'd lean toward thinking that roadside gunfire could prove to be a dangerous distraction to drivers passing by. I'd even say that somebody dropping a heavy tree branch (I hesitated to use a simpler word) on a car could be a dangerous distraction.

Just Goes to show how the Police Over react and treat citizens..My Wife and I saw a police officer going the opposite direction one day. I told my wife look he is starring at us and turning around (I could see in mirror). The officer swarmed us as we pulled into a parking lot at the grocery store with his hand on his gun.My wife said what is going on Officer and he said oH I thought you fit the description of someone and left.We saw him pull into coffee shop immediately after words, Hmmm. I told my wife I get harrassed a lot because of the way I look and she did not believe me until that day! I go to work, Home, church, and pay my taxes, Yet I have to tolerate Police over reaction and harrassment..Too many times to mention but that was the only time I had someone with me thank God..

The windows are tinted. Looks like they broke out the back window so as to see inside.

I'd like to see one of the brave souls here being insulting run up to a darkly tinted automobile owned by a probably still containing a dangerous felon.

"You sound like a tool. "

That's not very helpful or descriptive. Perhaps you could indicate *which* tool I sound like: Jointer, router, biscuit cutter, planer; maybe nearly silent like a wood chisel or screwdriver.

Ya....But all you got to see was a bunch of cops acting like dangerous criminals.
10:46 AM on 02/20/2012
Yes indeed. Often the difference between police and criminal is that police have your delegated permission to use weapons while the criminals have not obtained your permission.
