Fla. Commissioner Jose Diaz Spreads Neighborly Love With Discounts On Goods, Gas

Discounted prices in the name of neighborly love? Sounds like a sweet deal.

Earlier this week, Jose 'Pepe' Diaz, a southern Florida county commissioner, kicked off '14 Days of Neighborly Love' -- a series of events to bring the community together -- by convincing a Sweetwater, Fla., gas station to sell gas for $2.14 (in honor of Valentine's Day) Good.is reports. Gas prices in Florida are typically $4 a gallon.

The gas-price initiative is one of many that Diaz hopes will make residents "feel a little appreciation and goodwill beyond Feb. 14." He wants the events to encourage other random acts of kindness by neighbors and businesses, NBC reports.

Unsurprisingly, residents are excited about Diaz's initiative.

“I was listening to the radio and they said $2.14 for gas and I came right here," Karla Martinez, a Florida resident, told CBS. "It’s a great thing they’re doing.”

Other offers during the '14 Days Of Neighborly Love' initiative include free consultations for foreclosure cases and free marriage counseling.

Several local politicians pumped their constituents' gas to kick off the two weeks of giving, including the mayor of Sweetwater, Manuel Marono.

“It’s not all about raising taxes and making laws," Morono told CBS. "It’s about giving back to the community to help them out.”
