Jeff Goldblum In 'Seminar': Alan Rickman To Leave Role, Goldblum Will Step In

02/15/12 12:18 PM ET  AP

NEW YORK -- The bad news? Alan Rickman is leaving the hit play "Seminar" on Broadway. The good news? Jeff Goldblum is taking over.

Producers said Tuesday that Rickman will play his final performance on April 1 and Goldblum starts an eight-week stint in Rickman's old role on April 3.

In Theresa Rebeck's play about the soul-torturing world of authors, four budding writers are taught about life by a crass, pugnacious novelist-turned-tutor.

Goldblum last appeared on Broadway in "The Pillowman" in 2005. He recently starred in two productions for London's Old Vic: "Speed-the-Plow" in 2008 and "The Prisoner of Second Avenue" in 2010, both opposite Kevin Spacey.

Goldblum, a bigger name than Rickman, and a fine, enjoyable actor, would be cast better as one of the students than as the teacher.. As any top director will tell you casting counts above all. Sorry, and perhaps I'm wrong, but this decision can only have been made with commercial motives in mind. I would have preferred to see Frank Langella, Bill Nighy, Jeremy Irons, etc. etc. in the role.

Alan Rickman is brilliant, I hope he goes on forever! . . . 'because it hurts more'
the Sherriff of Nottingham in Kevin Costner's Robin Hood. Superb! :)))

I love the sound of Alan Rickman's voice. Has he done books on tape? Off to check.

Good luck Jeff! I would not want to be the actor replacing Rickman on anything! I'm just sad I'll never see Rickman on broadway--at least not in Seminar-- I live in Los Angeles : ( However, I can see Goldblum in the role as well. I wish Rickman would take a cue from Paul McCartney and do more "one-off shows" and shorter running theatre performances so he wouldn't get burned out and his fans can see MORE of him because he is an awesome actor!

I have known Alan Rickman's name since I saw Truly, Madly, Deeply. He is irreplacable.

But pI am a big fan of Jeff Goldblum too :)

First saw him in a BBC Classic Serial production of The Barchester Chronicles as the odious Obadiah Slope, he was superb in that, Snape in HP always reminds me of that role too. You can probably still find is on PBS DVD.

A longtime Alan Rickman fan, from the Metatron in "Dogma" to his tragicomic turn in "Love Actually".
