Miranda Lambert Questions Chris Brown Grammy Performances

CAITLIN R. KING   02/14/12 07:41 PM ET  AP

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Country singer Miranda Lambert doesn't get why controversial R&B star Chris Brown was allowed to perform twice at the Grammys on Sunday.

She tweeted on Monday: "He beat on a girl...not cool that we act like that didn't happen."

Brown beat up then-girlfriend Rihanna the night before the Grammys in 2009. He pled guilty to an assault charge and was sentenced to five years of probation and six months of community labor.

Lambert suggested Brown listen to her song "Gunpowder & Lead" about avenging domestic violence and "be put back in his place. Not at the Grammys."

She attended the Grammys in Los Angeles with husband Blake Shelton who was a double nominee. Lambert joins a slew of others who questioned the move on social networks.

The Grammy-winning singer is known for hits including "The House That Built Me" and "White Liar."

A message left seeking comment from a representative of Brown's wasn't immediately returned.

The fact that Glen Campbell shared the SAME stage as her makes her calling out of Chris Brown alittle less like "Righteous Indignation" and a little more like self promotion. The line about CB listening to her song....*whatevaitis* seems to make my point.

I know this won't be a popular post and I am certainly not defending Chris Brown. What Brown did was reprehensible. He should have been punished and I am not sure he was punished enough. That being said, how come we never hear about what the "victem" did that night? Rhianna admited that she was hitting Brown the day he beat her up. She was angry at a text she found on his phone and started beating on him. He then completely beat her up. I don't condone what he did in any way, shape or form. But why is there no one out there who calls her out for what she did? Everyone is "team Rhianna", but I don't think she should be free of criticism in this incident. Are we really so blind that we don't see that domestic violence goes both ways?

Brown is super creepy - there isn't one appealing thing about him.

"How dang long did they give Nicki Minaj to do whatever that was? Strange. And Chris Brown twice? I don't get it. He beat on a girl…

Not cool that we act like that didn't happen. He needs to listen to Gunpowder and lead and be put back in his place. Not at the Grammys." - Miranda Lambert

What's his place Miranda? It seems to me you're saying he's better off dead than moving forward with his life and leaving the past in the past (Which is about 4 years ago) Or maybe his place is to rot in prison for the rest of his life. What else this man can do? He's apologized, did everything asked of him.. If Rihanna forgave him, why can't everyone else? He won a Grammy based of his singing abilities, not his swinging abilities. This was a one time incident. He doesn't have a rap sheet of abusing women. or committing any other crimes for that matter. If he did I could see why people wouldn't forgive him, but this isn't the case. Miranda Lambert's comments were way out of line. If she want's to speak out for women and domestic violence, do it 100% or not at all. Mel Gibson abused his girlfriend Miranda. He did it while she was holding their child. Where were you when this made headlines Miranda? Since she likes bringing up old incidents maybe she'll put him and Sean Connery on blast at her next concert.

Since you're so quick to forgive and forget, would you let your daughter date him?

And Miranda Lambert called him out because she believed he shouldn't be allowed to perform at the Grammys. If Mel Gibson or any other known abuser was invited to perform, she'd have blasted them too. Just because she called one abuser out, doesn't obligate her to call all of them out. Sheesh.

"... If Mel Gibson or any other known abuser was invited to perform, she'd have blasted them too"

Then why didn't she? Because if she doesn't then her posturing seems hypocritical.

I agree with Miranda Lambert. Beating a woman is not something to be celebrated. As a woman
who have experienced this kind of abuse I am glad Miranda has the courage to speak out about
what others seem to believe should be overlooked. If we continue to accept this kind of cruel and violent behavior by giving a stamp of approval rewarding these abusers the consequences will be much too severe. Miranda I commend you on your courage and concern about the welfare of women. THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Put back in his place? That has a very Tea Party / Sista Soulja moment ring to it.

What is Chris Brown's place, Ms. Lambert? Serving you mint juleps? Busting up a chifforobe for you?

Savagely beating a woman makes everyone cringe, and we want it to go away. Yet, there's almost no one here who hasn't known a woman who hasn't been beaten up by a boyfriend, ex-bf, husband, or ex. We look at these guys & think, "He's my brother-in-law/cousin/buddy, and he's really such a good guy." And we pull back from making a judgment, or we want to spread the blame around. But we have to speak out and be honest and demand an end to domestic violence.

I stand with Miranda Lambert. No one has the right to hit on or beat another person, and Chris Brown's assault on Rihanna was especially vicious. It's true he did the mandated courses, but very little time has passed, and Brown's rage over anyone mentioning his attack continues. He won't stand up like a man and accept that this will follow him for years to come. He thinks he can "decide" it's over, and no one will ever refer to it again. The music community opened their arms to welcome him back, even though he's shown very little remorse for the impact of his violence. Miranda was right, and I give her credit for having the guts to say Brown still has a long way to go. Beat a woman, and it will follow you for the rest of your life. That's just the way it is.

There's no doubt in my mind that what Chris did was wrong, key words, "what he did!" I feel that if he was not a celebrity, everyone wouldn't be making as big a fuss as they are now. It is because he is a celebity and his life as well as the poor decisions he makes are in the spotlight!! Am I saying what he did was right? NO!! I know domestic violence all too well. I have chosen to forgive those who have hurt me and have been forgiven by those whom I've hurt. Rhianna by her actions has chosen to forgive what he as done. I'm sure she won't forget, but why keep attacking him because of what he did? The Grammys allowed him to preform twice, not because they wanted to glorify Chris's abuse towards Rhianna. They allowed him to preform twice because of his amazing talent and his ability to entertain. So for those who insist on bashing the Grammys for their decision and Chris, come down off your high horse!! Place yourselves in this situation. I'm sure you would want the one you've hurt the most and the world to forgive you!! Stop acting as if you've never done anything wrong and take the time to realize this, if you don't forgive, your sins will not be forgiven by God! Chris, Rhianna, the Grammys and no other person has the power to place you in Heaven or hell!! ONLY GOD! So forgive and move on!

Wow. What a hypocrite. I don't agree w/hitting women; but, it's amazing how this ADULTERESS is only focused on the Black man. Glenn Campbell beat Tanya Tucker up and down country row; yet Lambert's lover, oops, husband, introduced and performed with him. Clearly, her whiteness allows her to pick and choose "sins". I will believe she is against this behavior when she picks on the following: Eminem, Sean Penn, Charlie Sheen, Mel Gibson, anybody married to Tammy Wynette, Woody Allen ( a pedophile), Roman Polanksi (a pedophile), and the list goes on and on.

Lambert needs to get off the "white of way" and list ALL of the abusers, irrespective of their color. But, I guess this good 'ol country adulteress can't see past the commandment she broke. show more show less

What has sleeping around got to do with domestic violence. Miranda has been an outspoken advocate of women abused by men, period. It is a them that occurs and recurs often in her music. This has nothing to do with the race of Chris Brown. As a black man myself I believe it is completely disingenuous to deflect this as a racial issue. Domestic violence crosses all races and all classes. Chris Brown is a man who has proved time and again, that he has anger and violence issues. Miranda Lambert is right. All the men you have mentioned have been called out because of their domestic violence. Is Chris Brown not to be critiqued because he is Black. The issue of domestic violence in African American communities gets short shrift. It is a problem that needs to be highlighted and not in a way that dismisses it. That's the message that the Grammy's did not consider, and it should have, in asking Chris Brown to not only perform, but perform twice. It was a slap in the face to all those Black women who have faced domestic violence. What about that? Miranda good for you for standing up and making it an issue!

And she also raised a very valid point as to why Miranda isn't as upset with her fellow country artist glen Campbell who is guilty of the same thing as brown...but you chose to ignore that just like Miranda chooses to ignore it BC glen is like country royalty...total hipocracy.

You're comparing adultery to domestic violence? Seriously? Violence vs. sleeping around? Totally not the same thing. I agree that Charlie Sheen, Mel Gibson, and any other wife-beater should not be welcomed by the entertainment industry with open arms, but domestic violence is much worse than adultery.

Adultery has caused as much damage to the lives of those involved as domestic violence. Only an adulturer would be able to see it that way.

This is NOT a race issue people!!! So what, he's black and was called out like the abuser he is!!! She's right. As for Glen Campbell, if he truly did beat Tanya Tucker than shame on him...However, that was 30+ years ago and if he did abuse her, than he is paying the price by suffering from Alzheimer's...

Right. People abhor his abusive behavior because of his race. Certainly not because it's an act of pure evil, control, and intimidation.

I am really not a Chris Brown fan and I am not familar with Ms. Lambert but it comes a time to let things rest and go on. I grew up in domestic violence as a kid with my step-father. It took a while but even I forgave him. It wasn't easy but I eventually did. So, if Rihanna has forgiven Chris Brown we need to for give him not forget what he done but forgive him and hope he has learned from his mistakes. And for you who don't feel it necessary not to forgive remember God says we should forgive our neighbors. Again, I forgive Chris for his actions but I want forget what he has done.

I agree...and I love Miranda but where the heck is all this coning from? She can't project whatever issues she has with domestic violence on other ppl. At this point everyone else needs to let it rest and this is coming from someone who hated Chris. But I'm not gonna keep carrying it..I wish the best for rhianna.

You can forgive...but that doesn't mean forget. Three years is hardly enough time for him to be considered a recovered abuser...but, if Rihanna wants him back, that's on her...I just don't have the time or energy to comment about what I think of her...but I can say that I have empathy for her, even though I can't stand her as an "entertainer"...but that's a different post...

Any woman that stays with a man who's physically abusive? ESP repeatedly so, obviously has ZERO self-esteem. I've known women who seem to feel this way about themselves... choosing to take abuse (emotional, physical) because they think they can't do better. You CAN be intelligent, beautiful etc and still have a negative self-image and make bad life decisions as a result. It's just sad...
11:32 AM on 02/18/2012
Absolutely...rhiana and women in those situations have identify issues..a rich successful woman can absolutely be a victim..its not just the poor girl who came from a broken home.

So you both are going to blame them instead of the men who did it to them, and the misogynistic system that creates this in the first place? Wow.

It's silly for everyone to argue so heatedly about something that we know very few details about. I've been on the receiving end of domestic abuse and I can definitely say that this picture is never as black-and-white as we all like to think it is. No one deserves to be victimized by their partner, that's a give-in, but love (especially young love) can become all-consuming & messy.

Sometimes people really need to think & reflect before they attempt to engage in a committed & nurturing relationship, because they just aren't capable of doing so. Maybe therapy is in order, who knows. Chris Brown is obviously one of those people. Frankly, Rihanna is probably one of those people, too. Supposedly they're working together again? Either way, she's forgiven him or she was never that upset in the first place and has used this entire episode to fuel her career via public sympathy. If that is the case, then she definitely has my sympathy. I can't imagine record sales and publicity being that important. Both of them should have handled this with a little more dignity and done their best to keep it private. I hope they both get the help they need and find fruitful relationships, with other people, in the future.

Yep Chris Brown beat on a girl.. Plain and simple.
