New York Post's 'Amasian' Jeremy Lin Headline: Offensive? (PHOTO, POLL)

Posted: 02/15/12 08:40 AM ET  |  Updated: 02/15/12 09:07 AM ET

The astonishing rise of New York Knicks sensation Jeremy Lin has become the biggest story in sports, but some are celebrating in rather iffy ways.

Lin's stunning, buzzer-beating, game-winning three-point shot in Toronto on Tuesday night sent the world into another frenzied round of "Linsanity." But the New York Post is drawing eyebrows for the headline on its back page sports cover: "AMASIAN!"

The headline writers at the Post aren't the first to tread into murky racial waters when it comes to Lin, who has drawn almost as much attention for being Asian as he has for his sports skills. Columnist Jason Whitlock and boxer Floyd Mayweather have both made offensive, race-based comments about Lin (Whitlock later apologized).

Some readers took objection to the headline, with MSNBC host Chris Hayes calling it "questionable" and others saying the Post was an "absolute disgrace." People also tweeted that they loved the headline, though, with one calling it the "greatest headline ever."

What do you think? Tell us in our poll below.

I would say what is probably most offensive is the need to somehow point out the fact that he is Asian at all in the title. Just go with something that goes with what the point of the story is. Why not emphasize Harvard.

Let's not forget that the NBA is big business. Jeremy Lin is a feel good story, and I am certain that the off-court media hype is 100% manufactured to repair the PR damage that the labor dispute caused to the NBA.

Let's also remember that this is a very new phenomenon, and could be a flash in the pan, statistically.

That said, Mr Lin is a real sportsman, and presents himself as as a team player, and a humble young man. I hope he continues to represent his sport so well, regardless of his long term statistics.

Amasian is nothing compared to "Chink in the Armor."

ok first of all, as an asian american, i want to say something to my offended asian brethren. racial epithets and the like are only offensive if you allow them to have power over you. they are merely words, nothing more, nothing less. what you should be paying attention to is the intent behind the use of said word. in this case, there was no ill intent, in fact it was intended as a compliment. asian + amazing = amasian. now really ask yourself, were you really offended? I mean, really insulted. i'm willing to bet the word offended is probably not the most accurate word to describe your reaction. whatever the case may be, to be offended by mere words, especially words with no ill intent, indicates a lack of self assuredness and self-realization. if you are confident with yourself and your identity, you would not let silly words affect you. in my opinion, playing the race card means playing the role of the victim, and a victim to me, is one who acquiesces in defeat. do you really want to perpetuate the stereotypes that plague us as asian americans by bitching about something so trivial? have some self respect and stop giving us a bad name by crying foul over something so silly as a headline trying to be cheeky by using a word like "amasian".

Let's see. Lin is ASIAN. It was an amazing shot. Why is it offensive? Rather clever if you ask me.

When people say this is no big deal, it really gives insight to how people think it's okay to place racial category over accomplishment. We wouldn't put black or white before any sports phenom headline(didn't do it with Tebow or Jordan), yet we do it here and think its okay. Disgusting and proof that when people claim race doesn't matter it should fall on deaf ears

Respect Lin as an athlete 1st..

it's a murdock.k.k publication. if any organization would project a racial angle it would be a a murdock.k.k publication. that makes it offensive to me. why couldn't they have posted, "AmazLINg!"

Why do you think Murdoch or his news organization would be more racist than other news organizations? Two of Murdoch's own daughters are Asian, and two of his grandchildren are African, FYI. I think the reason for mentioning that Lin is Asian is that it's a first-time achievement, sort of like being the first black President. Surely, nobody objects to mentioning race, when discussing Obama.
12:14 PM on 02/19/2012
the test is this. would they do this to a black person? if not, then it's racist. when obama was president there was no headline "Blacktastic!!!"

Excuse my ignorance... but does the headline mean he's American and Asian, or is it a play on the word AMAZING.

I think he's greatful to play, to be off the couch, earning a little money, and wining!

Seriously? I mean, seriously??!? He is of Asian decent. He is amazing. Good grief people. It is not disparaging, mocking or stereotyping. It is noting his race which is very, very rare in this case. That is what makes it cool. It is cool because he is Asian. Its neat. Short little Asian kid busts out of nowhere. That is awesome.

"Short little"?

huh!
Some might think this is offensive.

He's listed at 6' 3", 200 lbs.
02:29 AM on 02/20/2012
Of course you don't have a problem with it. You have no problem using racial stereotypes like 'short little Asian' to describe Lin.
11:50 AM on 02/17/2012
As an Asian-American I am not offended. I am just happy that finally they're taking notice of Asian-American's contribution to society.
01:25 PM on 02/17/2012
"taking notice of Asian-American's contribution to society"...a couple awesome basketball games being a contribution to society. Facepalm...
02:27 AM on 02/20/2012
Umm breaking sports barrier (and stereotypes) by being the first Asian-American to succeed in the NBA?

Man, you're a hater.

Why ask us if it's offensive? Ask Jeremy Lin and other Asian Americans. (Seems tacky IMO, but I'm not the referent.)
09:40 AM on 02/17/2012
Well, I'm Asian American and I think it is offensive.

If I am competing in a professional sport and do so well that I earn the attention of the public and the media, do I want them focusing on my race?

ON MY EFFING RACE????

No of course not. And I'd be stumped at why people do that.

It's like people calling Lin "The Taiwanese Tebow."

Lin was born in Los Angeles and grew up in Palo Alto.

Sounds right.
01:27 PM on 02/17/2012
Ok, your personal feelings aside, almost all of the hubbub is precisely because of his ancestory and its uniquness in the NBA. This kind of thing has happened in the past. Remember? Of course you don't, because it was a black kid pulled from the fifth line and given a chance and nailing it. What makes this story cool is the fact that he is unique. That is not offensive. You are offended that they are saying, "Check out this Asian!" I would think it would be a sense of pride.

its just stupid, this headline probably got approved by a few people and i doubt any of them wanted to be overtly racist. too bad the reality is that an asian star in the NBA draws attention not so much because he's been brilliant, but he because he's been brilliant and he's asian
