Oscars 2012: Mother Dolores Hart, Former Elvis Co-Star, To Walk Red Carpet In Religious Garments

Dolores Hart Elvis

First Posted: 02/15/2012 2:48 pm Updated: 02/19/2012 4:20 pm

Nearly 50 years after leaving Tinseltown to become a cloistered Benedictine nun, Mother Dolores Hart, who starred in films alongside the likes of Elvis Presley and Walter Matthau during her acting career, is returning to Hollywood to appear at the Academy Awards next Sunday. And she'll be wearing her religious habit.

Mother Dolores, 73, is the focus of "God Is the Bigger Elvis", an HBO documentary nominated in the best documentary short category.

The film documents Hart's unusual journey from starring in dozens of Hollywood films to becoming Prioress of the Benedictine Abbey of Regina Laudis in Bethlehem, Conn., where she acts as spiritual counselor to 38 cloistered nuns, Sojourners reports.

"It will be so nice to be back at the Oscars. It's such a fun night," Hart told USA Today. "The last time I was there was in 1959, when I was a presenter. This will be different."

Back then, Hart was a 21-year-old rising starlet who had already starred in films alongside Elvis Presley, George Hamilton and Montgomery Clift, USA Today reported.

A few years later, she was at the peak of her acting career on the trail of a seven-figure contract, and was happily engaged to Los Angeles businessman Don Robinson.

But by then Hart's feelings about Hollywood had already started to change, a shift that began some years before when she was performing in a Broadway play , Sojourner reported.

Whenever the play went on hiatus, many actors would go up to friends' vacation homes in upstate New York. But Hart didn't know anyone, so a friend suggested that she stay at the Abbey of Regina Laudis, which offers a number of guest rooms.

It was there that Hart got to know the sisters of Regina Laudis and fell in love with their way of life. In 1963, to the devastation of her fiance, Hart entered the Abbey as a postulant and took her final vows seven years later.

"I adored Hollywood. I didn't leave because it was a place of sin," Hart told USA Today.

After all, Hart was a Los Angeles native who grew up on Mullholland Drive overlooking the lights of Hollywood, she explained in a 20/20 Interview.

Hart had another explanation for leaving, one she says remains just as mysterious today as it did back then.

"I left Hollywood at the urging of a mysterious thing called vocation. It's a call that comes from another place that we call God because we don't have any other way to say it. It's a call of love. Why do you climb a mountain?"

CLARIFICATION: Language previously used in this story incorrectly implied that Hart starred alongside Elvis in 11 movies. The story has been updated for greater clarity.

She still have beautiful eyes.
01:10 AM on 02/27/2012
I think she is beautiful. I was a former Catholic and I can understand how a vocation can be a beautiful thing, but now I'm agnostic or even an atheist by others labeling me, but I think she has a lot of courage to turn away from the high life just as I think it takes courage on my part to leave the Catholic church and become an agnostic. The Benedictine sisters are a fine and beautiful choice. If I could feel it would be the right choice for me, this would be my choice. Of course, I would need to be in service to human kind just as Jesus did. And in case you didn't know, I do believe Jesus existed. He wasn't a myth (though he has been mythologized by the right-wing christian, reactionary conservative, money grabbers.) I hope she has found peace and joy in her life.

There are many churches that share your theology. You obviously care a great deal. Take the time to look around. A community of searchers who haven't hijacked Jesus could be your calling too!

Sandra, why don't you write to mother Dolores? After reading her story and your comment it sounded to me like you guys should know each other, at least by mail. What struck me about your comment is that even if you and mother Dolores may have different points of view, you both seem to be well meant, good people, and also that you say the Benedictines aren't that bad. Whatever you do, I do hope the both of you find peace and joy wherever you go :)))

I well remember the vicious, vindictive child-hating nuns that tormented me as a kid attending the Catholic Church's school/prisons. God, what made this woman waste her life this way?

Omg I remember when they made me hold may hands out then they would hit me with the ruler or make me stand in a corner facing the black board holding books with my hands spread out holding heavy books. Except for sister Anita she was a sweet heart and a very beautiful lady. But I feel your pain!

I loved going to Catholic School. The nuns were very caring.

Just watched the Dolores Hart interview. My husbands mother, Naomi Riordan was very close to Dolores and Patricia Neal and spent years at the abbey. Naomi passed away in 1998 and Mother Dolores sent us a beautiful letter saying how much Naomi (also an actress and one of the first Rose Bowl Queens!) meant to her and to everyone at the abbey. That was very meaningful and I'm just so sad that we didn't spread her ashes there...we spread her ashes sadly over our two sons graves instead. Cannot wait to see her documentary on HBO...it's a lovely way to also remover Naomi.

But who's going to design her religious garments? Gucci? Eve St. Laurent? Inquiring minds....

The Pope's red slippers are made by Prada, maybe the Vatican has a tab with them that she could use.

Not true. They have been hand made by the same place long before Prada was around.

What is most telling here is how devoted these women are to their callings in an organization which requires them to sit at the back of the bus.

They don't think about seat location. I had the great good fortune to work with a nun who started a free clinic and food bank. She had no time for anything except helping those in need.

Your right the good Sisters don't think about seat location. But as evidenced by the few Catholic women who enter the convent today, it is apparent that their choice is not to even get on the bus. They elect to fly I am sure.

She's a nun whose religious order wears a habit, what else would she wear to the Oscars?
11:17 AM on 02/20/2012
Exactly. If she had joined the military after her film career would they be surprised if she chose to wear her dress uniform? In fact I would consider it much more news worthy if she chose NOT to wear her habit.

Good for her...too bad the Church does not allow the Women Religious to have leadership roles in the Church, they are sent away to the convents, hospitals and basically the back of the church. Yet, they are not blinded by the power like the male leaders are and are some of the most selfless human beings to walk the face of the Earth, caring only for the well being of others (yeah, we really need them to take over the Church)...

I doubt the Sisters of Charity would agree.

Given all the flack Muslim women get for dressing similar to nuns, for exactly the same reasons, I find the mild tones and general lack of bigotry rather interesting.

As a note, I'm condoning bigotry, I think it's brilliant she's made such a decision for herself and left the glamour of Hollywood for something more important to her. I'm condemning the hypocrisy that's become standard.
01:28 AM on 02/27/2012
Yes, and it's too bad. The Catholic religion is a mystical religion which keeps people wondering and wondering. Lots of people find rest in nice lies. Who am I to say what gives people peace.

I am an atheist.
But I must say that I respect religious people, particularly Catholics who refer to their faith as a mystery.
The Nuns always spoke about the "mystery of faith" Catechism class.
There is no science to it.
No logic.
Religious who try to reconcile the "mystery" with reality ultimately fail.
If one wants or needs to be religious they have to give in to the truth that Spirituality is a mystery.

BTW, can you tell me how the activation of the bilions of neurons in the brain create thought? It's a mystery to scientists.
