Ron Jaworski Out Of 'Monday Night Football,' Signs Five-Year Extension With ESPN

Ron Jaworski

BRISTOL, Conn. -- "Monday Night Football" is switching to a two-man booth.

Analyst Ron Jaworski has signed a five-year contract extension to appear on other programming on ESPN and will no longer join play-by-play announcer Mike Tirico and color commentator Jon Gruden on Monday nights, the network said Wednesday.

Jaworski, the former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback, will work various ESPN studio shows year-round, often focusing on his specialty of breaking down video.

"With him doing one game each week, we don't necessarily believe we were getting the best Ron Jaworski had to offer to the network," executive vice president Norby Williamson said.

Jaworski called "Monday Night Football" games the past five seasons. Gruden, the former Raiders and Buccaneers coach, joined MNF in 2009 and agreed to a five-year extension in October. This is the first time in 15 years ESPN has used a two-person lead team on its NFL game coverage.

"There was nothing broken about `Monday Night Football,'" Williamson said.

He said network executives believed Tirico and Gruden worked well as a two-man booth and there was no need to add a third person.

"I fully expect Mike Tirico and Jon Gruden to be together for the foreseeable future," Williamson said.

Liked Jaws but Gruden was enough to break it down for the viewer, plus Gruden has a lot of charm. I hope he makes it to Sunday Night someday, I can't stand Collinsworth.

Oh man! I like Ron (Gruden plays that boyish charm to death--too cute by half; or should I say half-time).

Now if they could just get rid of Gruden and Tirico......

I wish they had dropped Gruden instead. He must be paid by the word.

Yes, they let go the wrong guy. Gruden plays the super macho man part to death.

Pat Summerall. Period. The classiest act to ever call an NFL game. He allowed play action on the field to actually breathe...and he refrained from endless motor-mouthed over-analyses. Summerall never talked over referee penalty announcements, either.

Those were the days...

No announcers..crowd noise and refs only...anyone remember when NBC did this once.and by once I mean 1 time...back in the early 80's I think....I liked it,..they used the PA announcer to give all the basic info.

Pretty sure it was ABC on a Monday night (but it was so long ago I'm not sure). I saw that game, didn't like it at all.

Most people didn't like it because it was an experiment they tried one time and never did again ...Oh well..once again I'm in the minority.

Hooray! I never could stand Jaws he's such a know it all in his mind. The only one worse was Tony Kornheiser, god was he bad! I like Gruden and I like Tirico so this is much better.

Liked his knowledge/analysis. 3 in the booth is too noisy sometimes. Like the NFL Net's round tables with Irving. Think I'm watching The View with everyone talking all over each other at times. Jaws didn't do it on MNF but Gruden seems to

Stop the world! There has been a change in MNF! Stop everything! War! Stock market! Space Shuttle! Meteors! Everything must come to a standstill until MNF is figured out!

MNF is a Joke. Not what it use to be. Look at who is on the other networks. Fox-Joe and Troy or CBS- Chris Nantz. That is a broadcast I will listen to. Still trying to figure out the NFL Network staff, but to all the Stations out there, Be a Male or Female, give us People that will tell the story of the Game and the Players. We are not 3.
