Young Wall Street Bankers Face Threat Of Alcoholism, Eating Disorders, Crohn's Disease: Study

Young Wall Street

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 02/15/2012 12:23 pm Updated: 02/15/2012 1:02 pm

The life of a Wall Street banker is glamorous -- if you don't mind grappling with alcoholism, eating disorders, Crohn's disease and arthritis.

These were just some of the afflictions observed among one group of about two dozen young investment bankers, according to a study to be published later this month in Administrative Science Quarterly, cited by the Wall Street Journal.

The study followed the young bankers through their first six years out of business school -- a period during which every one of the bankers began to suffer from some kind of stress-related ailment. Bankers in the study were said to be working between 80 and 120 hours a week.

Though the long hours took their toll on the bankers in the study, burning the midnight oil can be a hazard for workers in a variety of fields. Employees who clock 55 hours a week or more are at elevated risk for depression and heart disease, and the largely sedentary nature of most contemporary office work has been linked to rising obesity rates in America.

And the problem may only be getting worse. Evidence suggests that the poor economy is facilitating a cultural shift toward longer hours in workplaces across the country, which is good for profit margins but likely takes a toll on workers' physical and mental well-being.

But it's not just overloaded work schedules that Wall Street workers are contending with, they face the additional stress of threatened pay freezes and faltering job security. Many financial firms have started laying off their less experienced employees in the midst of an uncertain business climate.

All of the stresses may be deterring younger workers from pursuing a career on Wall Street. In a poll published last year, a majority of young investment bankers said they wanted to leave the field entirely. Meanwhile, the number of investment bank and brokerage firm employees younger than 34 has dropped off by a quarter since the 2008 financial crisis.

The USC study isn't the first to analyze the way working on Wall Street can affect someone's psyche. Last year, a study conducted by Swiss researchers found that stockbrokers show competitive and risk-taking tendencies even more pronounced than those of diagnosed psychopaths.

Saturday, 18 February 2012 Italian police seize $6 trillion of fake U.S. bonds, now that is enough to make many mini bombs but do we think of this a theft only or the cash lost? It is now in 2012, and we are still all talking of the Iran nuke and never paying attention to the other’s nuke that they hold. Why we are such idiots that we never thought of anything before. When the chickens have all run away we want the eggs. That is not possible. I thank you. Firozali A.Mulla DBA

Evidently, via osmosis. Just standing next to another wall streeter increases the chances of getting their cooties and greed.

This is very real and not at all just at Wall Street, try all of New York City.
I worked in marketing in NYC for 3 years and it was the most stressful job and place I have ever lived.
People are just workaholics and obsessed with their jobs in NYC.
I had never had stomach issues in my life and wound up being hospitalized with Ulcerative Colitis while living in NYC.
I moved out of NY about a year ago and have never felt better.
I am calm, feel like I have almost no stress and haven't had a single stomach issue since leaving NY.
I honestly don't know how people stand that lifestyle there for a long period of time, it's just not worth it.

I bet they aren't as stressed as the millions of people whose lives they ruined.

This is nothing new. The insane stress level from working on Wall St., where millions can be made and lost in minutes, can compromise the health of even a strong, healthy person. Back in the Eighties my wife and I were friends with another young couple and he was a trader on the Commodities Exchange. We used to meet at their place for drinks on Friday nights, and the first thing he did when he got home was take his blood pressure. It was like something out of a cartoon - to the top and I was afraid it would keep going! We would gulp and say a prayer the poor guy didn't stroke out. One day he just had enough. He walked into his boss' office and said, "I quit." Apparently that happens a lot. Well, I am happy to say that my friend and his wife are alive and well in New Jersey raising their family and he makes a living doing something else.

The majority of the people that head out to Wall St and the financial sector know exactly what they are getting into! To portray them as victim's is rather asinine! Greed is greed period! In a "dog eat dog" environment you have to expect the consequences! The smart ones dedicate a certain amount of time and move on to a more stable work situation! You reap what you sow!

As a person who works in the financial industry i agree with you wholeheartedly. The thing is the people in this business arent the ones whining. Not one person i know in the business wants or cares about sympathy. We trade our health for money and its something we all know and live with. I for one accept this because of the oppurtunity it presents in setting my kids up for a brighter future. I would sacrafice my health for my kids future 100 out of 100 times. As i stated earlier there is no crying on wall st, we leave that for the rest of you

So money is worth more than life?
I for one would rather spend time with my kids and have them grow up with me in their lives and not conk out before they even get married, let alone never see my grandchildren.
I think there is a middle ground between providing for your family and trading health and possibly even life for money.
Guess I just think that there's more to life than money, and would hope that my kids feel the same way.

Exactly. If health was a concern, they could exit with still a sizeable amount of money in their pocket and start up in some new venture. For those of us without wealthy ties or outside of Wall Street, we would have to seek out loans and probably still wouldn't qualify. However, I went into my profession of engineering in order to resolve technical issues -- not for the sole purpose of getting money (although I would like to live comfortably).

Have talented people been drawn into WS for the money? Absolutely. Have many of these talented people figured out new and more imaginitive ways to siphon off middle class wealth and funnel it into their bank accounts? Absolutely. Do their actions create wealth for the USA? Not one bit. Do I care about the health of these parasites? That is like asking if I care about the health of a tapeworm in my intestine.

They also seem to have an inordinately high degree of mental illness: narcissism, psychopathic behavior, and delusions that gambling with other people's money entitles them to obscenely big bonuses.

As i read all the joyous comments here about people being glad about wall st workers getting sick. Let me say that as a Wall st worker , nothing in this article is news to us. We know this already and accept the stress and all it comes with. Do we do it for money? Yes, but some the money is for clubs or lavish lifestyle, others the money is to help your family get a head start. Here is what i never hear from my peers, complaints!. Never complain about the stress or the hours or what its doing to us. We made our choice and most of us own that choice. The whining is for the people who troll this site looking for articles to complain aobut people who have more than them. So all who are happy about this article ill say to you i could care less what you say. I laugh at how envious you are and try to hide that envy by bashing the millions of people that work in the industry as crooks( there are some and they have done tremendous damage, which hopefully we are coming out of) but to continually paint all of us with the same brush is comical. You may be glad i have stress but im glad for the private school my kids attend and college fund i have set up. Its a tradeoff but there is no crying on wall st, Ill leave that for you guys

What gets me is how much money you guys earn, and yet you can't write a coherent entence. Your post is littered with errors. Your first sentence isn't a sentence: it lacks a predicate. And you later state, " I could care less what you say." That means you actually care. You meant to say, I couldn't care less what you say. I guess this is par for the course, since it's all of you brainiacs who destroyed the global economy...

Well i guess since i only graduated high school and worked my way up, i am everything you hate about this country. Never took a handout , never complained ,just worked hard and made myself successful. Look through this post for errors , ill be scanning vacation websites for me and my family.
