Amanda Knox Has Deal With HarperCollins For Memoir

Amanda Knox Book

By HILLEL ITALIE   02/16/12 04:09 PM ET  AP

NEW YORK -- Amanda Knox has a book deal.

The young exchange student whose conviction in Italy and eventual acquittal on murder charges made headlines worldwide has an agreement with HarperCollins to tell her story. The 24-year-old Seattle resident, imprisoned for four years in Perugia, Italy, has not publicly discussed her ordeal beyond a brief expression of gratitude upon her release last October.

"Knox will give a full and unflinching account of the events that led to her arrest in Perugia and her struggles with the complexities of the Italian judicial system," HarperCollins said in a statement Thursday.

"Aided by journals she kept during her imprisonment, Knox will talk about her harrowing experience at the hands of the Italian police and later prison guards and inmates. She will reveal never before-told details surrounding her case, and describe how she used her inner strength and strong family ties to cope with the most challenging time of her young life."

The book, currently untitled, is tentatively scheduled for early 2013.

"Many accounts have been written of the Amanda Knox case, and countless writers and reporters have speculated on what role, if any, was played by Knox in that tragic and terrifying sequence of events," HarperCollins publisher Jonathan Burnham said in a statement.

"No one has yet heard Amanda Knox's own account of what happened, and this book will give Knox an opportunity to tell the story in full detail, for the first time. It will be the story of a crime and a trial, but also a moving account of a young woman's struggle to cope with a nightmarish ordeal that placed her at the center of a media storm, and led to her imprisonment."

Financial terms were not disclosed, but an official with knowledge of the negotiations said the deal was worth $4 million for world rights. The official was not authorized to discuss the negotiations and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

Knox was represented by Washington attorney Robert Barnett, whose other clients include President Barack Obama and former President George W. Bush. Some 20 publishers were interested and Knox met with seven, all of whom submitted bids during a recent auction.

Burnham said that Knox, who studied creative writing, would work with a collaborator and that her book will cover her life in Perugia leading up to the murder of 21-year-old British student Meredith Kercher, along with an account of the events surrounding the murder. Knox's editor will be Claire Wachtel, whose other authors have included crime novelist Dennis Lehane, journalist Cokie Roberts and U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas.

"Claire has a great track record of working with high-profile figures," Burnham said. "She's a very sensitive, responsive editor who I think can work with someone like Amanda, who's new to the experience."

Publishers in recent years have shied from controversial defendants, but Burnham said he was deeply impressed by Knox when he met with her.

"The experience of actually sitting down in a room and talking for an hour, an hour and a half with Amanda made me realize this was a very mature, intelligent woman who had been through an extraordinary experience," Burnham said.

"She'll write a very thoughtful, reflective and serious book about what happened. And that moves this book away from the world of tabloids, the lurid side, to something more compelling and, in a way, more longstanding."

Judge Claudio Pratillo Hellman, the Italian appeals court judge who freed Knox, broadly criticized the investigation and conviction of Knox. In a 143-page document released in December, Hellman wrote that she had been pressed to make statements against her own interest and strongly questioned the reliability of a pair of key witnesses.

Knox's legal issues are not over. Earlier this week, Italian prosecutors asked the country's highest criminal court to reinstate the murder convictions of Knox and her former boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito. Prosecutor Giovanni Galati said he is "very convinced" that Sollecito and Knox were responsible for the Nov. 1, 2007, stabbing death of Kercher, who shared an apartment with Knox in Perugia.

Kercher was found in a pool of blood. The appeals court in October said the guilty verdicts against the pair were not corroborated by any evidence, and that the court hadn't proven they were in the house when Kercher was killed.

A third defendant, Ivory Coast-born Rudy Guede, was convicted in a separate trial of sexually assaulting and stabbing Kercher. His 16-year sentence, reduced in appeal from an initial 30 years, was upheld by Italy's highest court in 2010.

Meanwhile, a lawyer for Knox recently filed an appeal of her slander conviction in Italy. The same court that overturned her murder conviction upheld the charges for slander – for falsely accusing bar owner Diya "Patrick" Lumumba of involvement in the slaying.

Lumumba was freed after two weeks in prison for lack of evidence.

Knox later said she was "manipulated" during her lengthy police interrogation. An Italian judge set Knox's sentence for slander at three years, less than the time she spent in prison. That meant she could leave Italy and return to Seattle.

Shouldn't the people Knox and Sollecito falsely accused get a cut of the profits since they were damaged from their untrue allegations?

They should but they will not, just like Knox will never be sent back to Italy if her aquittal is thrown out, which is higly unlikely.

Gee chunk, did J follion give any money to the Kecher famlily from his book sales, did gold digger barbie give any money to the kerchers from her book sales' did the one and only freelance reporter N pisa give any money to the Kercher family,
I think the answer is no, and yet they made lots of money from the death of Meredith Kecher, but to give, that would be a sin.

I'm not sure why this would be so hard to figure out for most, I guess if you're a member of the guiltbaggerklan, you have to stick to the "Knox is making money off of blood-money" accusation line, its another symptom Knox Derangement Syndrome that affects the GBK as a group...

When it comes to the guilters, anything and everything Knox does is wrong.

They wouldn't say a word about anyone who believes Knox is guilty writing a book and making money from it, but for Knox to tell her side of what happened to her...well...that's just money grubbing and selfish according to them.

This book is about cashing in on a murder. It will do nothing to answer the questions that dont add up about her so called innocence, and whoever is writing for Knox will most likely be smart enough to not even mention the victim's name or anyone related to her. You have to love American culture, where absolutely anything can be manufactured and sold into a commodity, no matter how distasteful. I'm surprised Casey Anthoney hasnt wrote a book yet.

I hope the Kerchers are reading this and are fighting for royalties. If Amanda is to profit over this murder, the ones who are really important in this case, the ones who truly lost something should have their hand in every aspect of this book.
12:53 PM on 02/27/2012
They should have nothing to do with it unless she lets them. This book is about Knox and her experience. They are only relevant as one-time enemies.

Their lawyer worked in concert with the police in an attempt to misportray Knox and have her jailed for life over dubious evidence.

They are the ones who wrongly believe the forensics were carefully collected, and they are the ones who cannot understand the contamination arguement. I hope - for the sake of accuracy at least - they are only contacted when and if Knox needs information about Meredith that is not available from any other source.
03:54 PM on 02/27/2012
The Kerchers have no legal rights to any royalties or anything else concerning this book.

A lot of people will pay to read the book.
Now let me see and try to but this right, we have heared from the world press, we have heared from the Kecher family, but the only time amanda Knox give a press release was at Seattle airport, which lasted for 1min and 50 secs.
It time for her to tell her side of the story, which she could not do for nearly four years, while the press ripped her apart to sell newspapers.
The only defence she had was her family, and even they had to be very carefull what they said to the press.
Now that she can tell the world about her feelings and what happen to her her in Italy will be interesting.

Talking about coincidences, did you know that Harper Collins is the SAME publishing company that OJ Simpson had for his "If I Did It" book about the murders of his ex-wife and Ron Goldman? Now Harper Collins is the publishing company for Knox and her memoir about the murder of Meredith Kercher?

Did you know that Knox has the same birthday as OJ?

Did you know that OJ and Knox were acquitted on the same day, October 3?

OJ and Knox both use Harper Collins as publisher for their books about murder.

Talk about karma!

Talking about coincidences Jack, did you know that SF55 has spammed the Knox discussions with ridiculous comparisons to OJ and Casey Anthony, and now how Harper Collins, one of the biggest book publishers out there today, that just happened to be the Publishing Company, Ooops! Oh my, could it be that it wasn't actually the Publishing Company HP, but that the publishing company that was GOING to release it was Regan Books headed by Judith Regan, a imprint publishing company of HP, and that actually the OJ book was NEVER published or released, at least as Judith Regan and OJ wanted it to be published, they were even going to add in a two hour "FOX Cable Channel Exclusive" interview by Regan with OJ...
The whole thing was "canceled", book, TV interview, and Judith Regan never really recovered from the whole mess...
I haven't heard anything about the Knox deal being "canceled" yet, so golly gee what do you know, it looks like SF55 has posted another post full of half truths and lies, because SF55 suffers from an extreme case of Knox Derangement Syndrome, at this point, its just getting sad and all SF55 seem to be able to come with post appeal...

I notice those least prepared to engage on the evidence trot out OJ, Casey, et al.  I don't think they understand how lame this makes them look.  (So, in pointing out their attempts to distract, I feel I'm just being a friend to them.)

Amanda Knox is not anymore innocent than Casey Anthony. An acquittal or not guilty verdict doesn't equate to innocence. More like a screwed up justice system. In a perverse and deluded society do murders receive $4 million dollars for book deals and movie deals. In a financially irresponsible society do reality "Teen Moms" receive $100,000 a year and pretend to struggle on camera when their world is cushioned by MTV for being knocked up and young.

The Italian legal system has two kinds of not guilty verdict. One type states that there was insufficient evidence to convict. The other does in fact equate to innocence. The appeals court ruling specifically stated that Amanda and Raffaele did not commit the crime.

So is her innocence the reason why Italian prosecutors asked the country's highest criminal court to reinstate the murder convictions of Knox and her former boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito?
09:49 PM on 02/20/2012
Patrick Lumumba had proof he was innocent of the crime he was accused of.

There is nothing to proof the innocence of Amanda Knox or Raffaele Sollecito. To the contrary, there is a lot that suggest they are guilty of the crimes they have been accused of and the Supreme Court hasn't ruled yet.
02:15 PM on 02/19/2012
Flower, exactly what evidence convinces you that AK and RS did, in fact, commit the crime?

Footwarrior is correct about the verdict. The verdict the appeals court delivered does equate to innocence as they were "acquitted for not having committed the act", and not for the other legal choice "acquitted for lack of evidence".
