Coen Brothers Transform East Village Into 1960's For 'Inside Llewyn Davis' (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 02/16/2012 4:26 pm Updated: 02/16/2012 5:19 pm

The East Village got a makeover on Wednesday for the Coen Brothers new film, 'Inside Llewyn Davis'.

Crews transformed storefronts with sixties era signs on 9th street, and lined up old cars (photo below) along East 2nd Street.

The film, set in (you guessed it) 1960's New York, follows the career of a singer-songwriter, based loosely on the life of folk singer Dave Van Ronk, and stars Carey Mulligan and Justin Timberlake.

Speaking of the East Village, was down there several nights ago and noticed a huge empty lot at Third and St. Marks Place/8th Street across from Cooper Union, where the Starbucks used to be. What's going on there? Not another NYU building.

Its going to be a hoot seeing the Coen's do their spin on that era..they have always been sharp with infusing obscure pop references with their particular humor.

The Kettle of Fish was one of my old favorite regular hangs..I hung out there with many notables from Dave who lived next door, to Paul Butterfield, Erik Frandsen, Harvey Brooks, Dave Johansen, Paul Siebel, met John Lennon there, Shel Silverstein, Kris Kistoffersen, Dylan, Kinky, Ratso, Roger McGuinn..

I was at the table when the Rolling Thunder Review was born there...

They better keep the cages around the trees out of the shot. They weren't even there in the 90's. I remember walking up 9th everyday on the way to Washinton Square back when you could buy weed out in the open.

Wow, I was thinking that could be pretty cool. I'm a Van Ronk fan.
Then I saw Justin Timberlake was involved. Hmmmm....expectations lowered.
Although he's actually not that bad of an actor from the little I've seen. He was actually pretty funny on SNL.

He was great in Alpha Dog and is always great and self-deprecating on SNL. I trust the Coen Bros, know what they're doing on this one!

Sheesh. Didn't think anybody would remember Dave Van Ronk.
03:50 PM on 02/17/2012
There was a book not too long ago.."Mayor of McDougal Street".

BTW...the film is apparently only "based on" Van Ronk. Therefore it doesn't matter who remembers him or not.

Oh, I know. It just was surprising to see his name again. There were a few from that era who were great but were kind of under the radar except for folks who were really passionate about music: Dave, Bert Jansch, guitarist Gabor Szabo; others.
Anyway, thanks for reminding me about that book. I had heard about it but never got around to getting it. Think I will now. Slainte.

Spot on. I also have a hard time with "The Man Who Wasn't There," but for the most part, their movies are excellent.

In the 60's, on St. Marks, Trash and Vaudeville used to be Limbo, there was the Electric Circus on the north side, I worked weekends at Jambangle (jewelry) next to St. Marks Leather close to 2nd, which much later became the Gap. Gem Spa is one of the only remaining places, where we used to run across the street for ice cream. Also the Fillmore on 2nd, Ratner's. Was great then!

Some things pass on, others endure. Of my favorites, McSorleys, The Five Spot, and Ratners, only McSorleys remains and hasn't changed a whit.
