ARLINGTON, Va. -- For the first time in the United States, vistors can view more than 250 personal images from Frida Kahlo at Artisphere. From an astonishing 6,500 personal photographs and items of Kahlo's, Mexican photographer and curator Pablo Ortiz Monasterio has created the exhibition "Frida Kahlo: Her Photos".
After Kahlo's death in 1954, her massive personal collection languished in storage for more than 50 years before being reopened. At last, in 2007, the exhibit was released in Mexico. In six different sections, visitors can view the photographs, many adorned with writing along the back. Everything from family pictures and snapshots taken with lovers deepen an understanding of Kahlo's fascinating personal life.
And now, thanks to the Arlington Sister City Association, the exhibit has travelled to Artisphere, where it will stay until March 25th. In honor of Kahlo, Artisphere will celebrate the female artist La Shica and the women of salsa. Innovative Mexican musical acts like Rana Santacruz and Mexican Institute of Sound also promise to keep the celebration exuberant.
The exhibit opens on Feb. 23 with a free reception at Artisphere (1101 Wilson Blvd, Arlington) from 7 to 10 p.m.
