Honduras Prison Fire: Survivors Describe Chaos Inside Barracks

Honduras Prison Fire

COMAYAGUA, Honduras — Hector Daniel Martinez was asleep in a small metal bed, one of dozens stacked so high in a narrow barrack that they nearly touched the roof, when the flames started.

The fire raced above Martinez's head, and he could hear the screams of prisoners.

Martinez, 32 and a homicide suspect, ran toward the barrack's single entrance. The door was locked. Most of the other 135 prisoners in the room ran toward the other end, where there was a bathroom with water and sinks.

It turned out to be a fatal choice. Martinez survived after a nurse came with the keys and opened the door. He was only one of 28 inside the barrack who did.

"One hundred and seven are dead," he said, his face conveying little emotion, as if a toll too difficult to believe.

In all, the fire at an overcrowded prison in Honduras killed 358 people, officials confirmed Wednesday, making it the world's deadliest prison fire in a century. The local governor said an inmate called her moments before the blaze and screamed that he was going to set the prison on fire.

Comayagua Gov. Paola Castro said she called the Red Cross and fire brigade immediately but firefighters said they were kept outside for half an hour by guards who fired their guns in the air, thinking they had a riot or a breakout on their hands.

As the investigation continued into the night, a group of inmates remained guarded by officers inside the prison grounds. They described a chaotic scene as the fire broke out and raced from one barrack to another, all filled with highly flammable curtains and mattresses.

When the fire was extinguished, all that remained of several barracks were the brick exteriors, painted with murals of Jesus Christ, saints and verses from the Book of Psalms. Inside, the metal cots, stacked four high and at least a dozen across, were charred and falling down.

At the end of each barrack was a bathroom with sinks and tubs. Wednesday evening, there were still numerous bodies inside several of the bathrooms.

In one large sink sat the bodies of two prisoners facing one another. Their remains were completely black.

Others were squished together, their bodies indistinguishable.

"In the other cells we found them in the same positions," said state prosecutor German Enamorado.

Selbim Adonay, 18, another homicide suspect, said he was trapped behind the metal door leading inside his barrack, unable to do anything as the flames spread and prisoners screamed.

"We couldn't do anything because we were locked inside," Adonay said. He was also released by the nurse.

Martinez said dozens of the prisoners in his barrack sought refuge from the heat in a bathroom, where the sinks and tubs were filled with water. Some may have tried climbing on top of one another to reach the roof, Enamorado said.

From the front entrance of the barrack, prisoners watched helplessly as the guard carrying the keys fled without opening the door.

"He threw the keys on the floor in panic," Martinez said, a dust mask hanging from his neck.

A prisoner who also served as a nurse picked up the keys and went from one barrack to another, opening doors in a barely survivable heat, Martinez said.

But by that time, it was already too late for hundreds of prisoners.

Your right my friend, but my worry is that if they did'nt know him as their LORD AND SAVIOUR when they took their final breath, then it's too late when they stood before him. I pray for death bed salvations.

I feel bad for what happened but hey the country is already bad at least they won't have to spend those $350 something they were spending a day on feeding them. now they can put the money for something more useful, "Another house for the president" I feel bad for the family and all but at least more than one guilty has to have gone from all of them. I mean some of these criminals are really bad, they attack the poor people that live on their $25 they make a week. there will be at least 1 less criminal to worry about. i know some mothers are crying and all that but hey they will always come to defend their petefile, robbers, gang member, son. i had an aunt who did this. she knew of her son being this way and she would put her hands on the fire for him. so sad! but now he is gone, killed in his own house by one of his gang member

Some of them were probably innocent. In these third world countries many cops torture suspects to extract confessions, even false confessions. So sad.

In the news it said that many of them had not even been charged with anything yet. I wouldn't be so sure that all the people in the prison were criminals in that country.

I hope that guard with the keys is caught and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. He should spend the rest of his life in the same prison--at least.
07:53 PM on 02/16/2012
your a democartic socialist. you hope NO ONE gets life or prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. That guard was just as poor as those cellmates. I hope he gets 5 years. He is a victim of society after all.

I have a question. I went to a few Honduran newspapers online to see if I could get more details of this fire and the aftermath. I also took a look at the comments section and was surprised to read a number of comments that spoke of big government, taxes, excessive regulations etc etc. I thought this was kind of interesting. I didn't know Hondurans were such vigorous disciples of Chicago school economics. Who is pushing this sort of indoctrination?

I heard BUSH was big on influencing Honduran society and economic prosperity. 'ya know.....so Hondurans could get work so they could "put food on their family". Wasn't "Georgie" great? Where has he been? It's like he doesn't even exist.

You're confused with your "Chicago" reference. Actually "Georgie" was impressed with how fast some of the Hondurans could make their cars go. He raved and said, "Gee.....cah....go" fast. So that explains that.

Not that your post is questionable but I'll be checking Honduran Newspapers also concerning your claims. Will find out who those people were who made those comments. If you don't hear back from me then you'll know your claims are fabricated and bogus.

Honduras needs help with its infrastructure. Are there organizations whom would donate their services free of charge? They could build it in phases. If the drug cartel was smart, they would donate funds to build their small nation.
11:32 PM on 02/16/2012
Great, just what they need be more under the control of drug cartels. they should've been there in that particular prison too. the president and everyone in the government are such as corrupts. they are probably looking for ways to benefit from this. probably already seeking for help from other countries. it's so sad.

This is the curse of Latin American justice, you do not have to be convicted to be in prison, you just have to be accused, while you are waiting for a trial you sit in prison. This is a human rights issue and should be taken to the UN, the problem is the Napoleonic system of justice which is you are guilty until you prove yourself to be innocent. Thank God I live in a society that is ruled by English law

In America all you need is to be accused as well. If you don't have bail money, you will sit in jail until your trial.
07:28 PM on 02/16/2012
I think you're wrong....if you are accused and you don't have the bail money...you sit until your trial..EVEN in the good old USA.

The coward guard should be charged with 300+ counts of negligent homicide. He'd last about 30 seconds in incarceration. He'd be torn apart by the other prisoners.

Honduras.  What a pathetic excuse for a country.  Most of those imprisoned in the charnel house had even been tried, let alone convicted.
