New Jersey School Bus Crash Kills 1, Injures 17

New Jersey Bus Crash

BETH DeFALCO   02/16/12 08:06 PM ET  AP

CHESTERFIELD, N.J. — A dump truck collided with a bus carrying elementary schoolchildren on Thursday, killing an 11-year-old daughter of a state trooper and critically injuring three other students – two of them the triplet sisters of the dead girl, authorities said.

The accident occurred just after 8 a.m. at a four-way intersection in Chesterfield, a town south of Trenton. It sent the bus, which was carrying 25 students, crashing sideways into a traffic signal pole, crumpling the side. Police said 17 students received injuries, most of them minor.

State police identified the father of the triplets as Sgt. Anthony Tezsla.

His daughter Isabelle was killed. Her sisters, Sophie and Natalie, were listed in critical condition at Camden's Cooper University Hospital, along with Jonathan Zdybel, also 11.

Students with less serious injuries were taken to three other hospitals.

Chesterfield police Chief Kyle Wilson said the bus had a stop sign while the dump truck had a flashing yellow light. He said it was unclear whether the bus was attempting to cross the intersection or turn when the collision happened. The dump truck ran off the road into a grassy area.

No charges were filed. Police said the investigation was incomplete.

A boy being taken from the scene by his mother told The Associated Press "this big truck just came and slammed right into us." The mother did not want the boy's name used.

The boy said the crash left some of his fellow students with bloody faces.

Students on the bus said they were wearing their seatbelts. But a mother of one of the children told television station NBC10 in Philadelphia that some children were still tossed into the aisle.

John Kelly, whose 11-year-old daughter attends Chesterfield Elementary School, said the triplets were in his house just a short while ago and played sports with his daughter.

"It's devastating. My wife can't come out or anything," said Kelly, who was picking up his daughter, who walks to school, Thursday afternoon.

Neighbors openly wept near the accident scene.

The town of about 8,000 residents has thousands of acres of preserved farmland, but there is also a lot of new home construction near the school, which serves nearly 600 students in kindergarten through sixth grade.

Gov. Chris Christie called the crash "a terrible tragedy."

"The family's grief must be enormous," Christie said in a statement. "We can only imagine their pain and lend our support and prayers in this most difficult of times. We are sure that all of Chesterfield Township, the family of State Police men and women, and indeed residents all across New Jersey, have the Tezslas in their thoughts and prayers. Our same concerns and prayers extend to the other children aboard the bus, particularly Jonathan Zdybel, the young boy who also remains hospitalized and in critical condition."

The driver of the school bus was identified as John Tieman, 66, of Beverly, and the driver of the dump truck as Michael Caporale, 38, of New Egypt.

A community vigil was being held Thursday at the Chesterfield Baptist Church. Officials said counselors would be sent to Chesterfield Elementary.

This is just awful, my heart hurts for the family who has lost a child.. . I wish the other two a speedy recovery, but I think, seeing they were triplets, there is going to be alot of counseling needed to be done here. This is so sad.

Here in CA, we just defeated a proposed gravel quarry. The few republicans left in CA are whining, about how us "environmentalists" were hurting big corporation. It was a business that would've put 80 dump trucks per day, on a road travelled by school busses. I lived in central Jersey, near the Trap Rock quarries. I watched those dump trucks roar through narrow back roads. 12 people have been killed by Trap Rock trucks, on NJ's Rte 31. 6 of them were children. Unregulated republican-style business development kills children. Period. What was that truck doing on a small road? Why did a republican governor allow a quarry in a residential area..again

If dump truck drivers were not getting paid by the "load" their speeds would come down.. Simple plan !

Let's all get the facts first before we bash all school bus drivers. That's why its called an accident. Just horrible feel for everyone involved!

Let's make sure we prosecute the republican governor, who allowed quarry development in residential areas, so their trucks could share country roads with school busses. Check the facts on Trap Rock, in Pennington. Their dump trucks have killed 12, over the years.

Would you feel better if this had been an accident between two school buses?

What a terrible tragedy to have children suddenly severely injured or killed when seconds before these children simply worried about unfinished homework or whether Mom and Dad were going to taske them to the doctor's for a flu shot.
How awful for parents to receive the dreaded phone call that their child was in an accident.
I will pray for the injured children to survive and to heal.

And how many of the students were wearing seat belts? (That's what I thought.)

School buses in NJ have seat belts. The bus collided with a pole so violently that it embedded into the children's seats.
02:57 PM on 02/17/2012
that is because school bus walls are paper thin. you can hit the wall with you fist and dent it.
09:24 AM on 02/17/2012
Either way an accident such as that one would still have serious injuries. Ed sad to think that was the first thing you thought of. My first thought was the children and the families.

I understand how this happen. We have a stop sign on a major hwy that turns left.People who are setting at the stop sign will look you right in the face and turn right in front of you. It's like so what,I have a stop sign and a flashing red light.Drivers are in such a hurry to go no where. They don't care. These's dam school bus drivers in Florida think that have the right away.In fact they go 70 to 80 mph in a 45 mile speed zone. And the stupid cops don't say one word to them.Maybe now that a cop's daughter has been killed, they will start enforcing the law better.I am sorry that she died and that her sisters are hurt.
09:34 AM on 02/17/2012
Wrong, busses are governed they can't go no higher than a certain speed, look up the word, no matter how much you push the fuel pedal down it will only go so high. if you drove a bus you would know this, everyone thinks we drive fast, no we are very good drivers we accually know how to drive better than the average person. and when we make turns it seems to others we do this fast, no we know how to turn and don't girl it... always complaints about speed.... and when we look at the speedometer we someone's flipping the bird or yelling to slow down, i'm doing the speed limit so the only way anyone would ever gets this would be to drive one!

In the last 50 years, dump trucks from the Trap Rock quarry, in Pennington, on Rte 31 have killed 12 people on that road. Half of them were children. Unregulated, republican-style business development..like putting quarries in residential areas, kills children.

If you read the story it said the bus had a stop sign and the dump truck had a flashing yellow light, that tells me the dump truck had the right of way. It is always easier to say it is the trucks fault over the other drivers. Quit blaming the truck drivers unless you have your facts straight.
11:17 AM on 02/17/2012
If I'm not mistaken, the yellow light means "proceed with caution". I'm guessing you're supposed to watch for traffic from the other direction. The article states the truck hit the bus. My guess is neither driver was being quite as cautious as they should have been, but we do need to wait for the complete investigation to know what happened.

And ten miles north of Chesterfield, in Trenton, kids live in conditions, so bad, infants routinely, lose toes and fingers, to the rats, that chew them off. Walk, alone, down two blocks of Wall st. in Trenton. I dare you.
