Yeardley Love Suffocated According To George Huguely's Defense

George Huguely Defense

First Posted: 02/16/2012 11:03 am Updated: 02/16/2012 1:26 pm

George Huguely's lawyers began their second day of calling witnesses to the stand, a day after a doctor for the defense testified that his ex-girlfriend died from suffocation and not a beating.

Dr. Jan Leestma said in the Charlottesville courtroom that Yeardly Love, Huguely's ex-girlfriend at the University of Virginia, died from lying facedown in a pillow while blood built up in her mouth, USA Today says.

Her position combined the fluid in her mouth could be deadly, according to Leestma. "That could do it," he said.

The defense's medical expert also argued that hemorrhaging in Love's brain was caused by CPR performed on her -- not a blunt force trauma as the coroner's autopsy concluded.

Love died in May 2010 at age 22. Like Huguely, she played lacrosse for the university.

The first witness called Wednesday by the defense was toxicologist Alphonse Polkis who talked about Love's blood alcohol level, which was between .16 and .18 on the night she died.

"She would've been impaired," Polkis said, according to ABC News.

The trial was briefly interrupted by an outburst from the defense's table that prompted the judge to clear the jury from the court, ABC News reported. Journalists, confined to listening to the trial from a separate room, couldn't hear exactly what provoked the uproar. But before the audio from the courtroom was cut, Huguely's lawyers asked the judge to dismiss the first-degree murder charge and several lesser counts -- a motion the judge rejected.

The picture painted by Huguely's team stands in stark contrast to the prosecutor's case against the 24-year-old former college lacrosse player.

The prosecution alleges that Huguely, in a drunken rage, went to Love's apartment, kicked open her bedroom door and beat her savagely.

During the first week and a half of the first-degree murder trial, prosecutors called roughly 50 witnesses to testify that Huguely had an abusive relationship with Love, that he regularly drank in excess and that he lied about where he was the night she died, weeks short of graduation.

Medical experts who examined Love's battered body, said she died from blunt force trauma to the head and denied that she suffocated. Jurors were shown graphic photos of Love with bruises and cuts on her body. They heard a recording of an interview in which Huguely told police that he shook her and might have grabbed her by the neck.

George Huguely V was escorted into the Charlottesville Circuit courthouse in Charlottesville, Va., before jurors began deliberating on Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2012. Nine hours later, they found the former UVA lacrosse player guilty of second-degree murder in the death of his ex-girlfriend, Yeardley Love.

To all the people posting that alcohol level of .16 could have killed her.... these are UVA lacrosse players on adderall. That is about a bottle of wine, in other words, nothing for them.

Yes. agree. also. as long as she was alive, her body would have broken down the lcohol.. she was home, but once her head endured trauma.. all regular metabolic functions were put to the side.. as the brain was in trauma.. swelling.. Abusers are savvy when it comes to oppurtunity. he knew she was intoxicated. he knew who left the room, who was coming, who was going. I am convinced he was watching, waiting. F&F.

sloppy defense by a desperate criminal.... basically he admit the beatings but deny killing her because she died suffocated due to the blood in her mouth while laying face-down. but guess HOW she ended up laying face-down??? duh???

The article you're reading here left out the part about her extreme intoxication. Her BAC at the time of the assault was .19 and could also have led to her passing out on her bed. She didn't die until several hours after he left

No, it doesn't leave that out at all, it's mentioned.

Doesn't change the fact their defense is she choked on her own blood as a result of the beating she took from the defendant.

Passed out drunk. Even her room mates thought so when they called 911. They were actually there and didn't see any signs of her having been attacked

They wouldn't have seen it, if they were not looking for it. These are young people, at the end of a weekend.. with their own prioritys.. she may have sufficiently covered the blood she was face down on. This Defense wants people> even 1, to think in Increments.. not logic, common sense, evidence, He is guilty. He will be found guilty. of what charge not sure.. but he will be in Prison still, or get the Death Penalty.

All I can think about when I see these updates are her poor mother and sister who have to relive all of this. I pray for them every day. RIP Yeardley. You will never be forgotten.

The Prosecution in the Anthony case was majorly blundered. They knew it before Trial, During Trial.. That's why they offered her a Plea Bargain. What they did wrong, was trust George Anthony.. followed his lead, comments, acts, drama. Once he got on the stand.. I knew she would be acquitted. I called it here, msn, Facebook, a few other sites, blogs. This case is not rocket science. It is all there. He will be convicted. All Appeals will be denied.

She was punched, kicked, semi strangled, slammed, scratched, pummeled, he killed her, he had nothing to lose. He knew to just beat her, would send him to prison anyway.. might as well take his chances, buy his time,.. & no matter. he scores 1 " because she no longer exists. He's here. She's not. They will find him guilty of first degree, easily. He will have all appeals turned down."

Her roommates called 911, and said she was unconscious from drinking too much. The room was in perfect order, and she didn't look beaten. There was no hole in the wall from her head, and the downstairs neighbor heard only one bang from when he broke the door. She had no skull fracture, or bruising to her head, except on her face. They have a tough case.

Assuming what you say is true, which it isn't due to the police reports.

Why did he then steal her computer and dispose of it?

I don't think he did it. He should be released immediately and sue the paramedics for medical malpractice.

i typically hate it when people bring up money in these cases but i agree with you. if you have money you definitely get a better defense. but not all rich people commit crimes like this.

The best theory is that she suffocated, which would have cause the brain swelling. The "torsion" theory is pretty dumb. People get in serious accidents all the time and don't die from torsion. Without a skull fracture, it wasn't a severe enough impact.
02:09 PM on 02/16/2012
If CPR caused trauma to the head..then I know why it didn't work.....you were performing it on the wrong part of the body!

If the jury buys any of this, they have got to be the dumbest jury in the history of Virginia. She died because he beat her so hard it twisted her brain and the center that controls respiration was severely damaged. That is hardly "suffocation". But of course the defense is going to drag her through the mud to try to "save" their spoiled rich pretty boy.

That is the job of a defense attorney. Why do you have a problem with that? They don't deal in guilt or innocense, they deal in aquittals.

I have a problem with an innocent victim being dragged through the mud when she can't speak for herself, and that being ALL the defense he has.
03:21 PM on 02/16/2012
a lot of people seem to think that only "innocent" folks (according to public opinion) are the only ones entitled to a defense. Apparently we should just throw our entire legal system out the window when we are emotionally offended by a crime.
