Dave Grohl On Grammy Speech: Rocker Clarifies A Few Things

Dave Grohl

Dave Grohl drew a lot of attention with his acceptance speech/rant for Best Rock Performance at the Grammys on Sunday, with many (us included) noting the subtle swipe at electronic dance music. Now, Grohl is back with a second rant to clarify the real meaning behind what he said with a public statement.

Here we go!

Oh, what a night we had last Sunday at the 54th Annual Grammy Awards. The glitz! The Glamour! SEACREST! Where do I begin?? Chillin' with Lil' Wayne...meeting Cyndi Lauper's adorable mother...the complimentary blinking Coldplay bracelet.....much too much to recap. It's really is still a bit of a blur. But, if there's one thing that I remember VERY clearly, it was accepting the Grammy for Best Rock Performance...and then saying this: "To me this award means a lot because it shows that the human element of music is what's important. Singing into a microphone and learning to play an instrument and learning to do your craft, that's the most important thing for people to do... It's not about being perfect, it's not about sounding absolutely correct, it's not about what goes on in a computer. It's about what goes on in here [your heart] and what goes on in here [your head]." Not the Gettysburg Address, but hey......I'm a drummer, remember?

Well, me and my big mouth. Never has a 33 second acceptance rant evoked such caps-lock postboard rage as my lil' ode to analog recording has. OK....maybe Kanye has me on this one, but....Imma let you finish....just wanted to clarify something...

I love music. I love ALL kinds of music. From Kyuss to Kraftwerk, Pinetop Perkins to Prodigy, Dead Kennedys to Deadmau5.....I love music. Electronic or acoustic, it doesn't matter to me. The simple act of creating music is a beautiful gift that ALL human beings are blessed with. And the diversity of one musician's personality to the next is what makes music so exciting and.....human.

That's exactly what I was referring to. The "human element". That thing that happens when a song speeds up slightly, or a vocal goes a little sharp. That thing that makes people sound like PEOPLE. Somewhere along the line those things became "bad" things, and with the great advances in digital recording technology over the years they became easily "fixed". The end result? I my humble opinion.....a lot of music that sounds perfect, but lacks personality. The one thing that makes music so exciting in the first place.

And, unfortunately, some of these great advances have taken the focus off of the actual craft of performance. Look, I am not Yngwie Malmsteen. I am not John Bonham. Hell...I'm not even Josh Groban, for that matter. But I try really fucking hard so that I don't have to rely on anything but my hands and my heart to play a song. I do the best that I possibly can within my limitations, and accept that it sounds like me. Because that's what I think is most important. It should be real, right? Everybody wants something real.

I don't know how to do what Skrillex does (though I fucking love it) but I do know that the reason he is so loved is because he sounds like Skrillex, and that's badass. We have a different process and a different set of tools, but the "craft" is equally as important, I'm sure. I mean.....if it were that easy, anyone could do it, right? (See what I did there?)

So, don't give me two Crown Royals and then ask me to make a speech at your wedding, because I might just bust into the advantages of recording to 2 inch tape.

Now, I think I have to go scream at some kids to get off my lawn.

In his final show of solidarity with EDM, Grohl signs his public letter Davemau5. But Dave, on to what we're all wondering -- can you tell us more about the complimentary blinking Coldplay bracelets?

The Grammy people are so old, so I've heard. Use to love watching them, but now its the same thing. However, when the Foos win, the grammy peeps rule in my eyes. ha ha. Grohl just rocks. Took my two boys to their very first concert and it was The Tubes, ZZ Top, and Foo Fighters. My 14 year old loves ZZ, and now Foo. I got them to the front, without pissing anyone else off and they got to see Gene Simmons just sitting backstage watching Foos play. ANd when The Tubes were on, you could see Grohl standing off to the side of stage, just watching and dancing along. Just so cool. Nowadays, the internet gives you the opportunity to become closer to musicians and have them be a postitive influence in young lives. Now, my 14 year old is a drummer in the school band (such as I was. played for two presidents, 88 World Series at Dodger stadium) and I am so proud. My other son loves music also and is very creative. (omgosh, sorry for rambling. :))

I never saw anything wrong with his original speech, I actually understood it. Made sense to me. I like he has a good sense of humor as well.

Last time I heard "Waaah the only real music is made with instruments" was in like 6th grade. It was lame then coming out of some JNCO wearing kid's mouth and it's still lame. I'd rather listen to perfect, computer created electronica than Dave's latest version of Learn to Fly, AKA Walk, AKA Times Like These....

Awwww, free to be you and me hug a tree. Metallica is rock and roll period.

It's oh-so-telling that a Metallica fan scoffs at the concepts of "artistry" and "being proud of one's music" as pathetic, given that Metallica hasn't been able to lay claim to either concept in at least a decade.

Metallica. Were great when they came out! However, Lars isn't Bono and needs to shut his trap and go back behind the kit where he belongs. Russell Brand said it perfect in Get him to the Greek, "Oh, why don't you go and sue Napster you TWIT!" Also, for them in concert. Saw them at Monsters of Rock at L.A. Coliseum, 9 hours of pure Heavy Metal! And they were second on the venue. They were on the stage for two minutes, tops, until the crowd became bored and started throwing CHAIRS at them! Booed them off the stage. Need I say more.

Grammy hasn't always given it up for the most genuine and Dave speaks to that phenomenon. No apologies necessary, dude, we heard you.

Electronic music is created by Technicians ,real music is created by artists !! Grohl is an artist and has earned the right to his opinion !!! Keep talking Dave ,most of us are buying what you are selling and the ones that aren't ,you don't need anyway !! Ricky Nelson sang it correctly,"You can't please everyone so you got to please yourself " !!!!!

Real music is not electronic music? Talk about a false dilemma.

Real music is not electronic music?

Where did you read that statement in my comment?? It seems you decided to create that conclusion in your mind !!! When you start reading and understanding comments without making assumptions or creating your own conclusions ,then and only then will you get another reply from me !!! As you slide down the banister of life, may the splinters never point in the wrong direction.

Thanks HP for letting me post my correction.

Dave Grohl needs to clarify or do damage control EVER!!! He is one of the most real, regular, normal, grounded success stories in rock music. Admirers of your music & your down to earth persona simply love you.
