Rick Santorum Picks Up Endorsement From Mike DeWine, Ohio Attorney General

In a surprising reversal, Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine switched his endorsement from Mitt Romney to Rick Santorum Friday in Columbus, Ohio.

"For some time now, it has been clear to me that Rick Santorum should be the Republican nominee for President," DeWine said in a statement from the Santorum campaign. "To be frank, I've had some sleepless nights. I could not, in good conscience, be on record endorsing Governor Romney when I knew in my heart that Rick Santorum was the better candidate."

The endorsement by the former Ohio senator is a huge coup for former Sen. Santorum (R-Pa.), who is surging in national polls and leads Romney in Ohio by a 36-29 margin, according to a Quinnipiac poll released Wednesday. Santorum and DeWine, both members of the congressional class of 1994, served together in the U.S. Senate and both lost re-election in 2006 in a Democratic wave.

DeWine endorsed former Massachusetts Gov. Romney in October 2011. "I think he has both the ability to unite the party and have general election appeal," DeWine said in October. "I think the issue in this campaign is going to be jobs." DeWine had previously endorsed former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty (R), who dropped out of the race in August.

DeWine was scheduled to give the invocation for a Romney event Thursday night in Cleveland, Ohio, but did not attend.

On Friday, DeWine said he began to have second thoughts about Romney's record and campaign style, implying the candidate too often goes negative on his opponents.

"You have to give the American people a reason to vote for you -- a reason to hope -- a reason to believe that under your leadership, America will be better," he said. "Rick Santorum has done that. Sadly, Governor Romney has not."

DeWine and Santorum shot down idea put forward by Romney surrogate and former New Hampshire Gov. John Sununu (R) that the Ohio attorney general decided to switch his support to Santorum because of an anti-Santorum ad about his support for voting rights of convicted felons.

DeWine said he had never seen the ad in question, made by Romney-backing super PAC Restore Our Future. Santorum echoed that statement to reporters, adding that the ad is factually incorrect because the bill he supported allowed only felons who had served out their convictions to vote. (The ad features a man in an orange jumpsuit, implying Santorum supported voting by felons in prison.) DeWine and Santorum both supported the bill during their time in Congress.

Santorum told reporters that he is confident he will do well in the upcoming Ohio primary, which will take place on Super Tuesday.

You know something is wrong when you have a guy switching from the level-headedness of a Romney to that of a ding-bat Santorum.

My family and I got to know the real Rick Santorum When, after a janet Reno witch.-hunt I was sent to a Federal prison for ,ready for this? failing to lie about a large Republican fund raiser. The dems had him squarely in their sights and felt if they squeezed me by threats and innuendo I would give this man up rather than be put away for two years. Wrong! During some of the most inhumane treatment short of a Soviet Gulag that I experie nced, my wife was helped by Rick and his staff interceding on numerous occasions . Since one of six Americans will have a brush with the law in their lifetimes , and one of thirty- five will be incarcerated( highest rate in the world) a day will come in your lifetime that you will need a stand-up guy to defend you or your loved ones. Rick Santorum is that guy

More Republican drama. This is beginning to seem more of a bad reality show than a Presidential primary. I hope this goes on thru the summer. It has been down right entertaining. If I could stand Mitt, even a little bit, I would feel sorry for his recent woes...

If the Republicans are smart, they'll nominate a Dark Horse Candidate who has no ties to campaign founders of any kind. Perhaps a poor humble Republican small vegetable farmer from Appalachia who owns a barn full of goats, a Tin Lezzy, and a chicken coop.

It is called Flip Flopping.

hurray for Dewine with no whine---Santorum should have the best shot in Michigan---and in an
actual run for President, Ohio would be HIS--espececially after Obama's assault upon basic
respect for Catholics---the Catholic vote in OHIO is crucial, and the state is crucial: the same is
true of Pennsylvania. Obama will lose both.
THE SADDES 'ABORT' all week was Mr.F with his "aspirin" idiocy--=Santorum should pitch the
guy not under the bus but in the trash---that remark ruined what could have been a great week--
GOP snatched DEFEAT from the jaws of victory on that one.
BUT THE BATTLE over forced Contraception and with it Abortion is by no means over: we will
see it writ large in Ohio and Pennsylvania---and Mr.Obama may rue the day he embraced the
lapsed Catholic, Ms Sibelius, on the national screen: she is pro-choice and here in MO this week
to spew her view all over MO with a visit to a government funded health institute---who says
none of this is politics. It aint over till it is over--my grand-daddy always said--and he lived to see Richard Nixon removed--=the old man's life-long ambition. Nixon, according to him and
Hubert HUmphrey, was the "most crooked scab" in sight. James McCormick

whether we like it or not, americans are more locked into appearance than substance. in mass. you have a handsome youthful looking republican incumbent sen. running against a grandma moses look a like. she is without question my choice but again the average voter thinks differently. in mass. she should be lite years ahead of her opponent. she is a nice looking lady but a modern day new haido would put her numbers where they should be. i am certain there will be much criticism about my observation but i served in politcal office for 18 years and know how most voters see their candidate. i can easily deal with the forthcoming complaints but if she wins, it will be worth it. in present day america, pres. lincoln would have a tough time winning against an attractive looking candidate.
