Whitney Houston, one of the world's biggest music artists, passed away last Saturday at the age of 48. A funeral remembering the legend is set for today at the New Hope Baptist Church in Houston's hometown of Newark, New Jersey. Houston's daughter Bobbi Kristina, ex-husband Bobby Brown and around 1,500 other members of her family and friends are expected to attend the private funeral service today. The late singer and actress' "The Bodyguard" co-star Kevin Costner and longtime producer Clive Davis are also set to speak at the funeral, as well as Aretha Franklin, CeCe Winans and Stevie Wonder. Wonder is reportedly set to perform during the service, which the family has called a "home going" ceremony.

TMZ posted photographs of Bobbi Kristina, who was with Houston in Los Angeles when she died, arriving in New Jersey last night. Outside of New Hope Baptist Church, fans have been laying down balloons, flowers, cards and other commemorative material. The streets surrounding the church have also been been shut down to the public for the service.

Houston is set to be buried next to father John Houston, in Westfield, New Jersey. The hearse carrying Houston's casket was seen departing from Whigham Funeral Home for the church Saturday morning at around 10am.

The six-time Grammy winner was found unresponsive in her Beverly Hills hotel room one week ago; the reason for her death is unknown, though it is reported that prescription drugs were found in her room.

Longtime producer Clive Davis remembered the professional Houston, who never let her natural genius get to her head. He also spoke of his love for her and also addressed Houston's love for daughter Bobbi Kristina.

"When she broke that all-time record of seven consecutive number ones, we just felt utter disbelief. I would ask her, 'Are you pinching yourself?' And she would say, with wide-open eyes, 'I'm pinching myself.' She never took anything for granted. She was never arrogant. She was always appreciative... Was there any performance of 'Star Spangled Banner that remotely compares to her? Will there ever be?"

"Personally, all I can say is that I loved her very much. Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind. Yes she admitted to crazies in her life. Yes she admitted to Oprah about her battles. But when I needed her, she was there. She was there for me, and eternally loyal friend... And Bobby Kristina, you too, always, always be proud of your mother. She loved you so very much. She defined not only pure talent, but true heart and soul as well. She'll forever be looking after you, and will never let go of your hand."

Kevin Costner receives a standing ovation after delivering a somber speech full of anecdotes that drew laughs from the audience. He reveals that he and Houston both grew up in the Baptist church. Of "The Bodyguard," and Houston's career-defining song in the 1992 movie, Costner says:

"The song 'I Will Always Love You' almost wasn't. It wasn't supposed to be in the movie. The first choice was going to be 'What Becomes of the Broken Hearted.' But it had been out the year before in another movie so we thought it wasn't going to have the same impact. So what becomes of our broken hearts?"

"You weren't just good enough, you were great. You sang the whole damn song without a band. You made the picture what it was. A lot of leading men could have played my part, a lot of guys could have filled that role. But you Whitney, I truly believe, were the only one who could have played Rachel Marron at that time. You weren't just pretty. You were as beautiful as a woman could be. And people just didn't like you, Whitney. They loved you."

Winans, a Grammy Award winner, is pastor of the Perfecting Church in Detroit, which he founded in the early 1990s. When you combine his ability to deliver a sermon and his musical background, he is the hands-down choice to celebrate Whitney's life at the church where she grew up singing, mesmerizing people with her talent as young as 12 years old.

Winans had a special bond with the pop star, say those who know him and knew Houston. His family has known the Houstons for years. Both are rooted in the church, and Winans married Whitney and R&B singer Bobby Brown, her ex-husband, in 1992. They have appeared onstage together but, more importantly, Winans knows the triumphs and trials of the musical celebrity that were at the center of her life.

On February 20, 2012, I visited a make shift memorial for Whitney at the Beverly Hills Hilton and posted a video on CNN I-Report: http://ireport.cnn.com/docs/DOC-751796 I believe that nothing in this world happens by chance including the fact that Whitney funeral and burial occurred on my birthday February 18, 2012. As expressed by the young minister during a February 19th North Hollywood, CA church service, Whitney’s funeral, which was broadcast around the world, was a part of her divine purpose of witnessing for Jesus.

iamwomanofcolor, My post was not meant to upset anyone or to mock Whitney I loved her voice and her music will live on forever. My post was meant to focus the world on what celebrity does to a person. She was surrounded by "loved ones" well why didn't they take daughter, or sister or friend in hand and bring her to rehab her life! They have so much more than we do and yet they sqander it so. Like Elvis and Michael Jackson and so many other priviledged entertainers. Let's put it into perspective....she died abusing drugs and alcholol....no matter what she did for the children or for apartheid in South Africa she couldn't control her addicitons. The whole world adored her you said it yourself. But see the underlying trend that is unraveling with these idols....everything they do is OK because it is so and so....and all her friends and loved ones stood by and watched her kill herself. The whole world watched her ruin her life and all the kids that she influenced had to watch her in death at her funeral serivce. What message does this send to our children ....I just wanted to focus the attention of a small part of the world on this

CONTINUED ....I just wanted to focus the attention of a small part of the world on this young man who had no notoriety and died defending his country.....where was the media for his funeral for his procession for his burial....if it weren't for U-Tube he would have been buried and forgotten. Watch the video iamwomanofcolor and then tell me who the real hero is? Tell me who would you have your children idolize? I am truly sorry and concerned that you were upset with my post.....Have a good night mam.

She was a great singer...she was addicted to pills , cocaine and alcohol....her daugter is following in her footsteps.....it is a tragedy in itself. That said I didn't watch any of the funeral coverage (all day) but I did watch every minute of the U-Tube coverage of the funeral procession on U-Tube for Staff Sargent First Class John C Beale KIA. The funeral procession took the viewer throught small towns down country roads flanked with thousands upon thousands of every day citizens who displayed their grief at the loss of a REAL HERO with tears and posters...flags....salutes....fireman with their hook and ladders criss crossed over the road to salute this fallen American Hero. I can relate to this tragedy more than I can relate to Whitney Houston's self inflicted death. And I ....will always ..........remember Sgt Beale Killed in Action defending his country. RIP in peace Sargent....you to Whitney.

your comment is sad, selfish, pathetic and wrong... every one grieves DEEPLY for those that give/lose their lives in protection of their country...WE ALL GRIEVE FOR Staff Sgt. First Class John C. Beale and WE ALL GRIEVE FOR Ms. Whitney Elizabeth Houston who gave of herself ceaselessly to those without... Before you go off (well you already did) on calling her out for her demons, find out about THE ANGEL SHE WAS ON EARTH!! As Nelson Mandela what she did for South Africans at the end of the oppressive apartheid - ask the millions of hungry children she fed... Grieve the way you most for whom you choose, but don't condemn those of us who deeply mourn the loss of an angel on earth...Ms. Whitney Elizabeth Houston...
10:46 PM on 02/20/2012
You paint with a mighty broad brush. Please don't include me in your "we" comment. I'm not grieving for Whitney Houston. And calling her an "angel" is a bit much, dontcha think?!??!?!!

A celebrity funeral wouldn't be complete without commemorative merchandise outside the church. How much for a koozie?
05:02 PM on 02/20/2012
R. Kelly has a criminal past and there he was singing to the glory of God, Cissy Houston is not liked by most of the members of New Hope because of her snobby attitude yet there they were in all their hypocritical glory

It was like an open joke when that marriage was announced ( Houston & Brown ), or did not anybody notice that Whitney looked like a boy in that bathing suit on the first album cover, or like a very masculine girl, because .....? and the media keeps saying she played NYC clubs, what clubs specifically and one in particular ? When you have a secret that big to hide, you generally do end up killing yourself one way or another.

I'm black I know the struggle you have to endure to make it, so when you do, you act a fool and throw it away, and then whose fault is that ? You want to cry for somebody cry for my childhood pal Larry who just recently died of cancer, he never got a break in this world, he struggled his entire life, or go through the obit's of your local newspaper, there are plenty of GOOD people to cry over, Ms. Houston was a good singer, not the best but a good singer she had it all, and she threw it away, thats her fault.

All this over compensating and hypocritcal tears, is unnerving,

Wow such disdain and assumptive statements on someone who is no longer here. I understand the loss of your friend, and I am sorry for his demise as well but you can not tell people who they can and can not cry over. As for people not liking Ms Huston I sum that up to being haters. Crab in the barrel is a issue for us all in the hood. If one person makes why not me is the the cry.. followed by I look better sound better play better simply put hater-aid at its best.
We are still at it kicking each other in the back.. Do you KNOW if R Kelly is saved? Don't worry I will wait.... No you do not so how dare you criticize what you do not know.

I am in disbelief at the amount disrespect that is being displayed. Let’s set aside, the issues Whitney has had, or came from. She is still human, & last time I checked she was not perfect. She was still someone’s child, someone’s mother, sister aunt, at the very least you people need to respect that, because one day it will be YOU! I am sure no matter the cause of death you would want to be respected. I believe people are more so celebrating her life and what she contributed to the African American Community as far as her talent is concerned. She is a legend when it comes to her skillful voice, she is a house hold name & millions of people adored her. Granted she made poor decisions for herself, & ultimately, those decisions may have ended her life. Instead of being disrespectful, why don't you find ways, to turn this into a positive, who cares how long it’s been on the news, I have seen unworthy news broadcast when they could have been focused on something else. ALL of sudden you are so concerned about what’s going on overseas, but what about what’s going on here! So give me a break U people are ridiculous, cruel & should be ashamed of yourselves. Here is an idea, if U people could care less or have something negative to say Y comment at all? I mean someone is dead here! Go comment on the presidential election, I can only

A precious, precious soul who was snatched from us because in her present state she had very little
good energy left to give. All the love pouring out to her will raise her soul higher...for God knows, she has raised our spirits whenever she sang. Her love of music and God came through to bless us all.
Who will every forget the love she poured out to her country and troups as she sang the "Star Spangled Banner" who hasn't had chills whenever they listened to her belt out that song. Thank you Whittney for all that love. Angels are with you.

Whitney Houston's death should be a wake-up call for all of us. One, drugs and alcohol are deadly. Two, some family members and friends tend to be fair weathered and when you find people (including family) that truly stick by your side through the many peaks and valleys of life, then you are blessed. Whitney Houston was a phenomenal singer and will truly be missed. I will continue to pray for her family. They, especially Bobbi Kristina, will need all the love and support possible now that Whitney is gone. I pray that if Bobbi Kris is doing drugs that she will muster the strength to stop and never go back to them. If she is not messing with drugs...I pray that she never starts.

Her death will not be a wake up call.

People know drugs are bad, she is just another celebrity in a long line of drug abusers. Elvis, Belushi, Ledger, et al.(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_drug-related_deaths) and Houston will probably not change the status quo.
