'Hanksy' Is At Krause Gallery And On The Streets

Hanksy

Hey girl, we know that you love Ryan Gosling. But we also know that you appreciate Ted Danson's work on "Bored To Death," and have fond memories of Bill Cosby's endorsement of Pudding Pops, which is why we are presenting you with a few more images from your favorite street artist, Hanksy.

For those not in the know, Hanksy is a prankster who has been stenciling Banksy-like works featuring Tom Hanks around New York. A few weeks ago, we featured Hanksy's work on the Arts page and it seems like a lot of people have a soft spot for weird images of Tom Hanks. In an interview with The Awl, Hanksy said about his work: "It's lighthearted and doesn't try too hard to be profound or serious."

You can see a couple of Hanksy's pieces up at Krause Gallery now, as well as work by the knitting maven OLEK, in addition to pieces by Jordan Eagles, Richard Silver, David Peterson, Emil Alzamora, Rob Tarbell, ScrewTape, Matt Colagiuri, and Stephan Zirwes.

Let us know what you think of Hanksy's new work in the comments section below.

“OLD TO NEW, A GROUP SHOW” runs until March 5th at Krause Gallery in New York.

Is the "hey girl" graffiti 'Hanksy' as well? I see those tags all over town.

Would love to believe Banksy is behind these works, clever as they are, but they feel like they're lacking that Banksy "X" factor. Can't put my finger on it. I think maybe because Banksy leaves interpretation up to his audience, and whoever did these felt compelled to spell out the messages. Ted Dancin, etc. Not Banksy's style.

On second thought, probably not a genius. It could be a ten-year-old doing these.

p.s. - it OBVIOUSLY is a 'something' to banksy because of the RAT.. look at the tom hanks rat paining.. i can't believe you guys didn't think of this.. and it took an idiot like me to see the proof.

i thought I was the ONLY ONE who thought this WAS banksy.. right when I saw the word HANKSY... either its Banksy not trying very hard OR it is a rip off of Banksy himself. OR it is just someone who put a 'funner' irony in the work. yeah it IS art, and thank GOD art is subjective. I don't care for it. But, Me thinks it's MR. BRAINWASH himself.... (i'd be willing to bet...)

It's all easy one-dimentional pop culture recycling that is more of a slightly clever visual pun then anything else. Hanksy is borrowing, not stealing, and it's time tested that great artists steal. This I guess would make Hanksy at least a good artist, he/she does know the right things to borrow. Art is a business and it needs sellable product, and good art always sells out.

Cute. But not fine art. Let's save humorous sketches for the comics section.

Remember when Tom Hanks was funny and not preachy?

Check out "Exit through the gift shop" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exit_Through_the_Gift_Shop) and tell me that "Hanksy" is not one more prank from Banksy himself.
Banksy's identity is a work of art in itself, concerned with identity, ownership and clandestinity. I wonder if the man - or the woman - behind Banksy recognizes her/himself in the mirror.
