298-Million-Year-Old Forest Found In Northern China (PHOTOS)

A fossilized, 298-million-year-old forest has been found under a coal mine near Wuda, in northern China. Like the Roman city of Pompeii, the 10,763-square-foot (1,000-square-meter) peat forest was preserved by ash spewed out by the eruption of an ancient volcano.

The remarkable find--to be described in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences--gives a "snapshot" of the climate and ecology at the time of the eruption. It was the result of a collaboration between University of Pennsylvania paleobotanist Hermann Pfefferkorn and Jun Wang of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Yi Zhang of Shenyang Normal University and Zhuo Feng of Yunnan University.

"It's marvelously preserved," Pfefferkorn said of the forest in a written statement released by Penn. "We can stand there and find a branch with the leaves attached, and then we find the next branch and the next branch and the next branch. And then we find the stump from the same tree. That's really exciting."

Those sentiments were echoed by Robert Gastaldo, a paleobiologist at Colby College in Waterville, Maine.

“This is a wonderful study,” Gastaldo told Nature. “Many of these plant groups we knew from other places, but we had no idea that they actually grew together.”

Check out artist Ren Yugao's paintings of the ancient forest. The scientists worked with Yugao to accurately capture how the sites looked at that time.

rick santorum would stop all of these scientific findings because he does not believe that the earth is that old. way to go scientists keep proving these crazies wrong.

Wait a minute. Doesn't that one 2,000-year-old book say that the planet is only 6,000 years old?

I just want to encourage anyone who only reads the first page of comments to be sure to keep reading until you come to a thread started by dusty55art.

It is really enjoyable. Especially if you let yourself imagine dusty55art actually talking and sounding like either Sling Blades' Karl Childers of Forest Gump. If you think of him as a sweet man-child sincere in his views and no hostility who is enjoying explaining his views on science and the Bible to a group of skeptical folk who understand science, then you might get quite a laugh. Don't get frustrated, just read it and chuckle. It's actually pretty hilarious!

I tried to find the humor, but I just got frustrated. Ignorance, and a resistance to understanding physical data, frightens me more than a little. When the US is finally dead last in math and science education (and we are getting there fast), it may be too late to recuperate. It's funny how people like dusty never question fossil fuels. I've never heard anyone like him try to explain those.

I think I see bigfoot peeking out from behind one of the trees in the distance.

Cool discovery, but for me nothing beats the Wollemi Pine. For those that dont know about it, it is a 100 million year old species of trees thought to have been extinct for 2 million years, until living trees were found just 200k outside of Sydney.

Amazing on how this became Political and Biblical. What would Santorum say? Oops, meant to say "what would Jesus -----". Sorry, I mix them up. Doesn't control need ignorance? I believe it is an amazng find that we can learn from.

awesome article, pretty pictures, I would change the time frame however, as the bible indicates life on the planet a long time before man was even created. but 200 million years ago? I think scientists are really only fabricating the time frame to discredit the bible indirectly. the earth was warm pole to pole at one time before the global flood (where do you think all that water came from?)when the water expanse above the earth made the earth a truly greenhouse place. I can guess here to as many believe the earth got bigger or expanded not the continents moving so much that it was all that water and extra pressures exerted by it that caused the massive upheavels of land making moles into mountains and causing the continents to move apart.

they did find lemon and orange trees in siberia years ago, along with warm climate animals still with food in their mouth and undigested food in their stomach frozen rapid and solidly. a gradual freeze would of allowed it to rot before fully freezed. one baby mammoth they found was edible upon thawing, something that would be impossible if it died and took more than a day or two to freeze. and a mammoth would not be in a cold region to begin with they have hair not fur and are vegetarians hence could not live in cold climates.

Almost everything you just said is demonstratably wrong. Sarcasm, or do you actually believe that your own imagination trumps scientific evidence?

Where did all the water come from? It was already here, maybe in the form of ice.

The bible was written by people who thought the earth was flat. Not a good starting place if you want to argue actual science with the bible.

Actually, as an agnostic I have to say: In all fairness, but those who wrote the NT presumably knew and accepted that Earth was spherical. It had been (Aristoteles, 330 B.C.) widespread knowledge.

No, no. Problems only began after Christianity and divine mandates became the hallmarks of Emperors and when gradually teaching was left to the clergy and institutions where prayer trumped science. ... Uhm, pretty much, the phase of an empire's development the US could be just about to enter. *kidding a bit*
