Diana Sanchez Barrios: Hoping To Become First Transsexual Woman To Occupy A Seat In Mexico City's Municipal Assembly

Diana Sanchez Barrios is the first transsexual woman to seek a seat in Mexico City’s municipal assembly, and, she has no doubt that she'll be wining the upcoming elections on July 1.

"This isn’t a matter of transsexuality but of capability, and I’m capable of legislating for all citizens – I’m ready to win and I know I’m going to win," she told Efe, according to Latin American Herald Tribune.

At a very young age, Barrios explains that she never felt comfortable as a boy and that at the age of 12 she decided to start dressing as woman, despite the discrimination she faced. At the age of 16, Barrios decided to leave her home. It was then that she began the process of changing her body hormonally, preparing for several years for a sexual reassignment surgery. She has managed to change all of her documentation with her new identity including her birth certificate, and voter registration documents.

Barrios, at the age of 20, returned to Mexico City fully transformed into the woman she always wanted to be. She became an activist and hopes to represent the human rights of minority groups while in office -- especially the LGBT community. Barrios is a leftist in the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD) in Mexico City.

In her opinion, there’s still a long way to go before transsexuals enjoy full rights in Mexico, because little has been done about issues such as adapting documents and obtaining the relevant health care, according to LAHT.com.

“You live undocumented in your own country. How are you going to apply for a job or be treated by doctors if your name doesn’t match the way you look?†Barrios asked.

In 2009, Mexico City's assembly approved an ordinance that allows transsexual people to go through the procedure of identity change, though in the rest of the country no such progress has been made.

I so appreciate your unique challenges as trans and being from Mexico, your fight is even more uphill then in the USA.

And I feel for the personal dangers of your trans-activist, especially in the more violent regions. I felt great sadness when the trans-activist Agnes Hernandez was recently murdered, and hopefully not being investigated as a possible hate-crime.

I would be honored if you would let me be your first Friend

I hope she wins. She should have kept her junk though. It's gotta be a mess down there

I imagine the RCC is spinning, and the conservatives are funding the "traditionalist" just so they can help keep things just the way they are. Something tells me if this woman gets into office, civil rights as an issue could mean a more open society. I wish her all the luck if she wins, and the freedom to help Mexico become a better place. That's if she lives long enough. (Harvey Milk).

Good for her! I hope she wins, it would mean Mexico is leaps and bounds ahead of America in terms of acceptance of the LGBT community.

How does Nature get "gender assignment and physical body" wrong? No snark, serious question.

Nature gives the person the mind that's opposite the physical sex they were born with. Of course, it could be ALL nature, but it may be given a push also by the the hormones coursing through the mother's system, or other physical conditions.

Mexico so much hate, violence, corruption, prejudice. I doubt she will win, but good for her.

Yeah, we're so prejudiced that Mexico City has marriage equality and a person from the GLBT community can adopt. Don't judge a whole country just by what you get on the media.

You must be speaking of the USA, not Mexico.

Does it really matter if she was a he? I could care less about that, just that whoever abides by the oaths and does a good job, helps if they aren't corrupt either. I don't really need to know if she was once a he or if so and so is gay or straight or even has a mistress or sugar daddy. As long as they aren't breaking laws or selling out their people.
