Ron Paul: 'Hemp Is A Good Product'

By DALE WETZEL   02/20/12 08:28 PM ET  AP

BISMARCK, N.D. -- Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul praised hemp as an alternative crop and said a free-market approach would protect the nation's environment Monday during North Dakota campaign stops that drew hundreds of cheering supporters.

North Dakota, which is holding Republican presidential caucuses March 6, is one of 13 states with a caucus or primary from Feb. 28 to March 6. North Dakota has 28 delegates to the Republican National Convention in August, although the caucus results will not dictate how any of them vote.

Paul campaigned in Williston, Dickinson, Jamestown and Bismarck on Sunday and Monday, following rival Rick Santorum's swing through Fargo, on the Minnesota border, and the northwestern oil-country town of Tioga last week.

In Jamestown, about 100 miles east of Bismarck, Paul was critical of the federal government's ban on the cultivation of industrial hemp, a crop that is related to marijuana but does not have its mind-affecting properties.

Industrial hemp is grown in neighboring Canada and other countries, where it is used to make paper, lotions, clothing and biofuels.

North Dakota's Legislature and Agriculture Department have pushed allowing hemp to be grown in the state. A state lawmaker who wanted to cultivate the crop filed an unsuccessful lawsuit against the Drug Enforcement Administration, seeking a declaration that doing so would be legal.

"There is no reason, in a free society, that farmers shouldn't be allowed to raise hemp," Paul said during a Jamestown appearance that drew about 300 people. "Hemp is a good product."

In Bismarck, where the Republican congressman spoke to about 1,200 people Monday night in the gymnasium of a private Christian school, Paul said enforcement of private property rights would be sufficient to protect citizens against pollution, rather than relying on the federal Environmental Protection Agency.

"The more socialized a system is, the worse the property is, and the worse the environment is," Paul said. "We should never be bashful about saying we believe in property rights ... and we don't have to give one inch and say that we're careless with the environment, because you don't have a right to pollute your neighbor's property."

In North Dakota's Republican presidential caucuses in 2008, Paul finished third behind Mitt Romney and John McCain, getting 21 percent of the almost 9,800 votes case.

Duane Sattler, of Richardton, was one of the sign-carrying Paul supporters who attended his Bismarck speech. His son, 13-year-old Shawn Sattler, sat nearby, waving an American flag.

"He's been standing alone a lot of times," Sattler said of Paul. "He votes for our personal freedoms, for sound money, and for less government and less taxes."

He became a Paul supporter during his presidential run in 2008, Sattler said. "I really went and did some research, and the deeper I dug, the more I liked the man," he said. "With the other candidates, the deeper I dug, the less I liked them."

I predict Ron Paul will drop out of the race and throw his support to Wall Street Romney. Will Paul's supporters abandon their principles and support Romney or will they stay home on election day?
10:47 PM on 02/23/2012
You haven't learned much about Paul, have you? He has as much use for lockstep party solidarity as I do for a tie-dyed toilet seat cover. Many of his supporters, like him, stand for an idea rather than the letter R. So no, the vast majority won't abandon their principles. They may stay home, vote third party, or vote Obama (depending on their personal beliefs), but support Romney? In the GOP leadership's dreams.

We will not vote Romney...and i cant see him supporting him. Remember, our movement is about ideas, problem is Ron Paul is the biggest cheerleader for those ideas. Our movement is growing tho, and is the biggest growing group of politically minded people by far.

Hemp is only a good product if the government says it is.

Yep Hemp Rules.

It can replace our wood, oil and cotton industries need 100% without the issues those industries cause.
honest, you can google this stuff.

And there is no reason is would replace them, only cut in to their profits. People will always want hard wood stuff, but we could use a Wood substitute that grows faster. We buy a whole lot of oil from other Nations, why not grow some?

We already import 6 Billion worth of Raw hemp each year, why not let our Farmers grow it?

Marijuana is also great, but its a slightly larger affront that Hemp is still off limits.

That Ron Paul would focus on hemp shows how his perception of the issues is askew. That's like fighting a mouse when a bear is knocking down the door.

The issue here, of course, is marijuana. Libertarian presidential candidate Gary Johnson addresses it best, hitting the nail on the head. He says:

>>>"The parallels between drug policy today and Prohibition in the 1920’s are obvious, as are the lessons our nation learned. Prohibition was repealed because it made matters worse. Today, no one is trying to sell our kids bathtub gin in the schoolyard and micro-breweries aren’t protecting their turf with machine guns. It’s time to apply that thinking to marijuana. By making it a legal, regulated product, availability can be restricted, under-age use curtailed, enforcement/court/incarceration costs reduced, and the profit removed from a massive underground and criminal economy.

By managing marijuana like alcohol and tobacco – regulating, taxing and enforcing its lawful use – America will be better off. The billions saved on marijuana interdiction, along with the billions captured as legal revenue, can be redirected against the individuals committing real crimes against society.

You fail to understand the importance to North Dakota farmers of having the legal right to grow a mega-cash crop that will support their families. Ron Paul is campaigning in North Dakota.

Not having the right to grow hemp is the bear (government) knocking down the door.

Yah, Which is why Ron Paul has for the last 3 years of more drafted and submitted a bill to legalize Marijuana.

Welcome to politics.

I love Gary too, but this whole legalize it thing started long before Gary was Governor.

Gary is the future.....once this election cycle ends, we can begin to build a new coalition around him for 2016. Maybe even a new party.

I don't understand how you can overlook Ron Paul's racist newsletters and his opposition to the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Is Dr.Paul pro-choice?No,he isn't.Does Dr.Paul support the Civil Rights Act of 1964?No,he doesn't.All I've written is the truth.
In 1996 Dr.Paul took credit for and defended the 1992 racist newsletters in interviews with the Houston Chronicle and the Dallas Morning News.It wasn't until 2001 that Paul denied writing the comments. When was Paul being less than honest, then or now?
06:18 PM on 02/22/2012
I'm curious how all the Paul fan boys imagine that he will enact anything without a like minded congress? Very, very little of his agenda could be effected. He would be the most hamstrung President ever, were he elected. Of course, that isn't going to happen.

Obama is defunding SS by moving it funding into the general fund where it can be cut like anything other domestic spending. His new budget defunds SS by $1.2 trillion over the next 10 years.

Hey, the broken clock struck again.

The man is right about very little, but this he is 100% correct about the futility of the drug war.
10:53 PM on 02/23/2012
Very little, indeed. After all, Iraq was a triumph that led to a thriving democracy in a matter of weeks and removed a stockpile of nuclear weapons from the world, the American economy is a global powerhouse thanks to a booming housing market, the government shows more respect for our individual rights every day, and terrorism is a thing of the past!

Right? Because if not, he may have been 100% correct about a few other things.

I just read that the production of hemp as a substitute for cotton is about 2 years off. But the cotton conglomerates could push that out to 5-10 years with their lobbying. If a viable way is found to replace cotton (it's softness being the factor) with hemp - that would be huge. Huge in that cotton takes a lot water and fertilizers to produce and ruins the land it's plant in while hemp improves the land it's planted on, needs little water and no fertilizers.
02:54 PM on 02/22/2012
To get the job done, cultivation must be made legal. This will allow big corps to invest and then I am sure within the next few years, cotton would be useless. Then guess who imports hemp to those countries?

Kentucky Seeks To Legalize Hemp.
Hemp would be a boon to Kentucky agriculture, lawmakers say
By Janet Patton

FRANKFORT—With the support of Agriculture Commissioner James Comer, Kentucky legislators filed a bill Thursday to put Comer at the head of the long-dormant Kentucky Industrial Hemp Commission and renew a push to bring the crop back.

U.S. Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, has filed legislation to lift current federal restrictions that keep farmers from sowing the seeds of the hemp revolution.

Pendleton and Phelps said they think farmers and others would line up to apply for state permits if the bill passes. And they see a big future for hemp products, including ethanol production, fiber, textiles, food, cosmetics and car parts.

"We could talk about the textile mills and the jobs that would be created. We could talk about the paper mills and the jobs that would be created," Henderson said. "We don't have any agenda other than we want to diversify our agricultural economy and create jobs."

Phelps said hemp could be a "gold mine." He said it would be perfect for mountaintop-removal mine reclamation projects, where it could be harvested for fiber or ethanol and would help repair environmental damage.

Comer said hemp could help replace the income lost in Eastern Kentucky as tobacco production moved west. "I believe that industrial hemp is a viable option for family farmers in Kentucky."

"It a low value crop with no real markets that cant be met with other plants that offer more benefits and are actually better. It is a ron paul pipe dream"
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Not a pipe dream : When it comes down to profit per acre the only crop that has more profit per acre is tobacco. Not corn and not grain or straw. This is per the 1998 study by the Center for Business and Economic Research at the University of Kentucky. So your facts are partially right, but you are ignoring (and I don't know why) that it's more profitable than grains and corn to grow. There might be better plants for some things, but my guess is that they are more expensive to grow. Of course, with bio-fuel so important, that might have raised the profit levels of corn over hemp since 1997 where it now costs more for everybody - but we'd all be much better off with speculators out of the grain and corn markets. By far, in my opinion, hemp is the best and most consumer friendly way to go,
