Afghanistan: Dozens Wounded In Demonstrations Over Quran-Burning At NATO Base

KABUL, Feb 22 (Reuters) - Four people were shot dead and dozens wounded in protests in Afghanistan which flared for a second day on Wednesday in several cities over the burning of copies of the Koran, Islam's holy book, at NATO's main base in the country.

The American Embassy said its staff were in "lockdown" and travel had been suspended as thousands of people expressed fury over the burning, a public relations disaster for U.S.-led NATO forces fighting Taliban militants ahead of the withdrawal of foreign combat troops by the end of 2014.

The U.S. government and the American commander of NATO-led forces in Afghanistan apologised after Afghan labourers found charred copies of the Koran while collecting rubbish at the sprawling Bagram Airbase about an hour's drive north of Kabul.

It failed to contain the fury. Thousands of Afghans took to the streets again, chanting anti-American slogans.

Winning the hearts and minds of Afghans is critical to efforts to defeat the Taliban. Similar incidents in the past have caused deep divisions and resentment among Afghans towards the tens of thousands of foreign troops in Afghanistan.

Seven foreign UN workers were killed during protests that raged across Afghanistan for three days in April 2011 after a U.S. pastor burned a Koran in Florida.

In Parwan province, home to the sprawling Bagram airbase where the Koran burning incident occurred, two people were shot dead by Afghan police and 13 wounded while attacking offices, provincial spokesman Roshan Khalid said.

A protester was shot dead by police in Logar province, east of the capital, the governor's spokesman, Deen Mohammad Darwish, said.

Afghan health ministry spokesman Ghulam Sakhi Kargar said one person also died in hospital in Kabul from gunshot wounds received during one of two shooting incidents at protests in at least four areas of the capital.

Shots came from the direction of a foreign military vehicle parked outside a U.S. military base, said a Reuters witness. It is not clear who opened fire. International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) officials said they were unaware of shootings.

Later, wounded protesters along the busy Jalalabad road on the fringe of Kabul said Afghan police had fired on them.

CHANTS OF "DEATH TO AMERICA", "DEATH TO KARZAI"

Twenty-one people, including 11 policemen, were wounded in the capital, said Mohammad Zahir, head of Kabul police's crimes unit. They included the city police chief, Ayoub Salangi, who was hit in the ankle by a stone.

Critics say Western troops often fail to grasp the country's religious and cultural sensitivities. Demonstrations by as many as 2,000 people broke out as word of the find spread.

Police said most injuries were caused by flying stones and sticks hurled by protesters. Demonstrators had charged police lines and nearby military bases at a protest on the edge of Kabul, burning tyres and smashing vehicles and building windows.

Protesters shouted "Death to America!" and "Death to (President Hamid) Karzai" in a large demonstration on the outskirts of the Afghan capital.

"When the Americans insult us to this degree, we will join the insurgents," said Ajmal, an 18-year-old protester in Kabul.

Demonstrators set fire to part of a housing compound used by foreign contract workers. A Reuters witness said the fire damaged part of a guesthouse at the Green Village complex, where 1,500 mostly foreign contractors live and work.

Outrage also spilled over in the Afghan parliament, where several members shouted "death to America" inside the legislative chamber.

Muslims consider the Koran the literal word of God and treat each book with deep reverence.

The protests spread to several cities. In Jalalabad in the east, demonstrators praised the leader of the Afghan Taliban, the secretive Mullah Mohammad Omar, screaming "Long live Mullah Omar!", Reuters witnesses said. Five people were wounded, the governor's spokesman said.

Afghan media said demonstrations had also erupted in the province of Parwan, near the capital.

In Logar province, hundreds protested in front of the governor's office. Some threw stones. Separate protests were also under way in Jalalabad in the east.

Some protesters burned U.S. flags and shouted "Death to America". Others torched fuel tankers near the city's airport. (Additional reporting by Amie Ferris-Rotman; Writing by Rob Taylor; Editing by Michael Georgy and Nick Macfie)

I am disgusted that the US Army allowed its troops to burn copies of the Koran.

What a complete waste of perfectly good toilet paper.

Seven foreign UN workers were killed during protests that raged across Afghanistan for three days in April 2011 after a U.S. pastor burned a Koran in Florida.

does anyone know if the families of those killed took legal action against the pastor in florida?
12:48 PM on 02/24/2012
They have no grounds for legal action... That would be completely foolish.
11:49 PM on 03/03/2012
What would be the cause of action?

So who would burn several copies of the Kuran at NATO headquarters?

Interesting how this coverage seems to skim over the facts, merely saying the burnt remains were found by Afghan laborers.

Why not ferret out the redneck trash who burned them in the first place, unlock the front door, and feed him to the crowds.

Or simply ship him (or them--lynchings and burnings usually are a mob dynamic, and who else in America burns books but Christian zealots?) back to the US for a serious courts-martial. Given the status of justice in America these days, forget bothering to investigate extra criminal financial transgressions, because Holder always looks the other way. I got it. Put some pot in their pocket, and imprisonment is automatic.

Somebody on our side is responsible for this carnage. Why protect them? For Jesus?

Jesus!

You're assuming a lot.
First, that the books were actually burned and not planted.
Second, if the books actually were burned, that it was done intentionally.

I don't understand your first point--"actually burned and not planted." You state I have assumed that? If you are saying planted, that would be your conspiracy theory that I would not in good conscience subcribe to. Talk about 'assuming a lot.'

Your second point is puerile. Burning such an incindiary artifact, which everybody knows has caused riots throughtout the World (witness the actions of the Florida "religious man" who merely threatened to burn a Koran in effigy), should motivate anybody with professional responsibility to carefully ensure that they were not burned accidently.

Beyond that, it is the responsibility of the staff at the Nato base not only to think ahead and act with extreme prudence concerning something so politically inflammable, but also to investigate thoroughly any tangential mishappening, instead of merely releasing a statement that it was "accidental." How many Muslims fell for that one? The NATO installation's staff failed miserably in this issue, no getting around that.

Its good to see these people believe in something, but it's definetly not that civilized as a group. The Koran is a book printed by people, it is not as important as the faith itself. These people need to get a life, an education and some common sense. It's as if it was a slow news day and the burning of that crayon drawn American flag was even news worthy. These people don't even have a real flag to burn, LOL.
Can people like this be worth our efforts, our lives and our security. Let them live thier cultural lives but let it be known they better keep it there, we don't need to care if they don't export their junk idealogy

God,
They all kill in the name of God, So who is god, If he is the creator, then we are his/her children, so would him/her allow the children to kill each other in his/her name.

Why don't the animals worship God, They share similar anatomy, So why just the Human race use God names to start war,
Because that's the best excuse yet! The human race and history proves it.
Also history shows the human race struggles to manage 100years without a major conflict.

Man the destroyer, its in our nature. Ever since we have emerged from the sea we have killed our neighbours in one way or another and since religion was found have used it as a legitimate excuse to kill. How many wars have been fought where it was always claimed God is on one side or another. If there was a God he would surely be crying at the way we have treated him and used him as an excuse for our own destructive nature. Maybe we actually live in hell and we will go through eternity never learning our mistakes.

The US should never have invaded and occupied Afghanistan, but on the other hand the Taliban (who controlled the government of Afghanistan at the time) didn't do a very good job of repelling the invasion either.

No, I do think the US should have responded. I just think they could have accomplished the same goals by with airstrikes and special forces operations instead of having an occupying force on the ground. The Navy Seals were able to take out Bin Laden without suffering any casualties, and if similar operations had been taken against Taliban leadership there would most likely have been a lot less US casualties than there have been with the occupation.
