Dolan Ash Wednesday

First Posted: 02/22/2012 10:14 am Updated: 02/22/2012 4:18 pm

The Franciscans of Holy Name Province welcomed Cardinal Timothy Dolan to the more than 80-year-old St. Francis Breadline in New York City on Ash Wednesday morning.

Cardinal Dolan distributed breakfast at the breadline run by St. Francis of Assisi Church. It is the newly elevated Cardinal's first official function in the Archdiocese of New York since returning from Rome on Tuesday.

He needs to fire his cook (and his nineteenth century fashion designer)!

Now, now. His 19th century Irish fashion statement is just fine. It suits him and the church he works for.

Photo opp for the cardinal or not, the Franciscans do this type of work everyday with or without the publicity. For those out there asking who does this the other 364.25 days of the year, they do.

Jeez!! What comments! OK so it is a PR stunt - its Ash Wednesday (or was) and that is to be expected! However, it is a GOOD THING to remind people that there are exceedingly large numbers of hungry people out there - even if you are eating well yourself, AND it is the Christian thing to do. I for one think that the Beatitudes are mainly being IGNORED by the so-called Christians in this country, Santorum leading the pack and Ron Paul representing people so cynical that no deity could convince them to believe anything. Thank you Cardinal for your generous actions on Ash Wednesday and please up the budget to feed the poor from your Catholic parishes for the other 364 days in the year.

Now that is what I call Christianity. Of course I will probably be shot down with this in the coming months...I regret, deeply, what has happened to the reputations of the believers who follow the life teachings of their Christ. Those who practice the empathy and love that Jesus had for his fellow persons are too often shouted down (overwhelmingly) by zealots.

Kings and Queens came out to wash the feet of the poor for one day. Didn't amount to much or change anyone situation. Either does this.

Jesus said "My food is to do the will of him who sent me.." He said to Peter "Feed my sheep" Jesus wasnt talking about literal food but feeding people truths from Gods word the bible. Jeremiah penned an interesting thought about the religeous leaders of his day at Jer 8v9 "The wise ones have become ashamed. They have become terrified and will be caught. Look! They have rejected the very word of Jehovah, and what wisdom do they have?
Should not the clergy feed the flock from Gods word.

If he sold his new shiny gold ring, he could feed so many more.

Always amused at these types of stories. What about the other days of the year. Our compassion appears to be related to holidays and holy days.
