As Rupert Murdoch attempts to move forward from the phone hacking scandal that threatened his media empire, he received a sober reminder on Wednesday that it is still far from over.
Cherie Blair, the wife of the United Kingdom's former Prime Minister Tony Blair, has sued News Corp. and Glenn Mulcaire, the private detective hired by the company's now-defunct News of the World tabloid to hack voicemails.
Court records indicate that Blair filed the lawsuit on Tuesday, though no other details have been announced as of yet. Until now, Blair had been indirectly involved with the phone hacking scandal that rocked News Corp. through her husband's former communications director, Alastair Campbell.
Campbell, known as Blair's spin doctor, filed a lawsuit against News Corp. in September. His suit was one of several settled by the company earlier this month. In November, Campbell gave a fiery testimony before the Leveson Inquiry, the press ethics inquiry that was launched out of the phone hacking scandal. He presented evidence to support his claim that it was "at least possible" that a Daily Mirror story about Blair's pregnancy was a result of by phone hacking. He also said that a "specific" visit Blair made was in Mulcaire's notes, which were then turned over to the police.
Before his position on Downing Street, Campbell was a political editor for the Daily Mirror. Campbell has previously blogged for The Huffington Post.
